Its widespread experiment stations throughout the state aH:ords the solution to many perplexing agricultural problems. The Extension Service, with headquarters at Auburn, is the medium through which useful and practical information on subjects relating to agri- culture and home economics is disseminated among the people of the state through numerous county agents, including county home demonstration agents and specialists. It holds practical demonstrations and publishes information as a means of reaching the people. The School of Science and Literature is the oldest school of the institu- tion and offers courses of study in various lines leading to the Bachelor of Science Degree. It is a service school for the institution. In it are contained the fundamental scientific, cultural and literary subjects necessary for the Proper training of men and women in all branches of the institution. Special emphasis is laid upon Economics and Business Administration, which are of great importance in present day industry. I The School of Architecture and Allied Arts offers degree courses in Arch- itecture, Architectural Engineering and Applied Arts. It also offers to the Students an option of either design for those wishing to become practicing architects, or construction for those wishing to engage in the field of structural architecture. The school is a member of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and is recognized by the American Institute of Archi- tects. fTHE ADMINISTRATIVE JOHN JENKINS WILMORE Dean School of Engineering and Director Engineering Experiment Sfafion The School of Engineering, iirst established at Auburn in 1872, today occupies an enviable position, not only in Alabama but in the entire nation. It deals with all phases of modern engineering, including construction, research, materials, machinery and processes of manufacturing. Its graduates are in demand in all industries because of their character and attainment, initiative, and thorough knowledge of the subject. The Auburn School of Engineering now offers nine Bachelor of Science Degrees in numerous different phases of engineering. The principal aim of the school is to develop the power of independent work and to promote the spirit of research through well organized facilities for advanced study. The Master's and Professional degrees are the reward of those who complete thir graduate study. The Dean of Women acts in the capacity as general adviser to the women students of the institution, and through this office a personal contact is se- cured for them. A close relationship is insured to each woman student which gives increased incentive for higher scholarship as well as a desire for a more active participation in college activities. The Social Director exercises supervision of the dances and other social events' through the Student Social Committee. Visiting girls are amply cared for while in Auburn for the dances by the Dean of Women. The need for men who are well trained in agriculture grows greater with the passing years, and so has the Auburn School of Agriculture in propor- tion to meet this need. The school has its function in the training in all branches of agriculture from the farmer to the specialist. It offers courses Page 20

V The Division of Extension Teaching, established in 1925 by the Board BENJAMIN ROSCOE SHOWALTER Direcior of Extension Teaching of Trustees, carries on instruction in study centers throughout the state for the benefit of those who are unable to come to the campus. It gives courses of instruction for college credit through correspondence and lectures at the different study centers. Regular members of the faculty conduct the courses, which are those listed in the regular catalog of the institution. Credits earned may be applied toward the baccalaureate and Master's Degree. The School of Veterinary Medicine meets the demand of young men and women who desire to become educated veterinarians or to study human medi- MAJOR G. H. FRANKE P. M. It prepares men for the profession of veterinarian, live stock disease inspector, government employees along veterinary lines, and as bacteriologists. Graduates of the school are eligible to membership in the American Veterinary Medicine Association as well as for appointment to governmental positions for which a course in Veterinary Medicine is a prerequisite. The School of Military Science and Tactics was established at Auburn upon the founding of the institution under the Land Grant Act of Congress. It comprises a Field Artillery and an Engineer unit of the seniors division of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. For the past fourteen years this school has received the excellent rating as a result of the War Department's annual inspection. The school offers courses which not only train the student for service in the army, but also training which is valuable as a part of his gen- eral education. The School of Home Economics offers courses in all phases of home eco- nomics leading to a wide range of occupations in practically every field open to women. It trains young women as home managers, child welfare workers, dietitians, and numerous other positions. It cooperates with the School of Pagn 22
