THE ADMINISTRATIVE IGMMITTIQE . .... I-IEN DR. Bradford Knapp resigned in the summer of 1932 as President of the Alabama Poly- technic Institute, the Board of Trustees named a special committee of six to make recommenda- tions for the filling of the vacancy created by his resignation. Instead of a president, the committee sug- gested an Administrative Committee of three members, which was accepted by'the Board, and which toolc office in August, 1932, to serve the institution in the capacity of a single executive. Three outstanding members of the faculty, Dean John Wilmore, of the School of Engineering, Director L. N. Duncan, of the Extension Service, and Professor B. H. Crenshaw, of the Department of Mathematics, were chosen as the three members of the Administrative Committee, of which Dean Wilmore was elected chairman, Professor Crenshaw, vice-chairman, and Director Duncan, secretary. Specific duties were assigned to each member, although they have at all times worked as a unit and have received the wholehearted support of the faculty and student body. They have performed faithfully, efficiently, intelligently, and courageously their additional duties without compensation other than the feel- ing and satisfaction of work that is well done. In recognition of their outstanding service to the institution, the Board of Trustees authorized the awarding to each member of the committee the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. The degrees were officially bestowed by Governor Miller, then ex-officio president of the Board of Trustees, at the mid- year commencement exercises in Langdon Hall, January, 1934. fTHE ADMINISTRATIVE JOHN JENKINS WILMORE Dean School of Engineering and Director Engineering Experiment Sfafion The School of Engineering, iirst established at Auburn in 1872, today occupies an enviable position, not only in Alabama but in the entire nation. It deals with all phases of modern engineering, including construction, research, materials, machinery and processes of manufacturing. Its graduates are in demand in all industries because of their character and attainment, initiative, and thorough knowledge of the subject. The Auburn School of Engineering now offers nine Bachelor of Science Degrees in numerous different phases of engineering. The Graduate School has offered for more than forty years the oppor- GEORGE PETRIE MISS ZOE DOBBS Dean of Graduate School Dean of Women and Social Director tunity for one to study beyond the Bachelor of Science Degree in all courses offered by the institution. The principal aim of the school is to develop the power of independent work and to promote the spirit of research through well organized facilities for advanced study. The Master's and Professional degrees are the reward of those who complete thir graduate study. The Dean of Women acts in the capacity as general adviser to the women students of the institution, and through this office a personal contact is se- cured for them. A close relationship is insured to each woman student which gives increased incentive for higher scholarship as well as a desire for a more active participation in college activities. The Social Director exercises supervision of the dances and other social events' through the Student Social Committee. Visiting girls are amply cared for while in Auburn for the dances by the Dean of Women. The need for men who are well trained in agriculture grows greater with the passing years, and so has the Auburn School of Agriculture in propor- tion to meet this need. The school has its function in the training in all branches of agriculture from the farmer to the specialist. It offers courses Page 20
