BUI LANIGUAGE Auburn High School has a new language pro- gram this year. Beginning with French and Spanish I, the lessons are taught by the use of films and tapes. Electronic headphones are used for better hearing and to enable the student to hear himself. In this program more emphasis is put on oral work than has been previously. The student should take all three years of the language to be prepared for a college course. There may be a French IV class in the near future. Spanish III was new this year, but it may be extended to four years also. Foreign Language students also have an opportunity to learn something about the country whose language they are learn- ing. There are fringe benefits such as the French and Spanish caroling at Christmas. Mrs. Charlotte Ottis-French I-III5 Mrs. Elizabeth Bekus-Spanish I-III. ESS The Business Department includes Typing I and II, Shorthandl and Bookkeeping. This year they have expanded their facilities and now have a small room in which they will have business machines such as calculators. Students learn basic skills of the business world. At the end of each year awards are presented for excellence in typing and shorthand which can help students obtain jobs. These awards are based on tests given to measure the number of words typed or taken correctly in a certain length of time. Shorthand is very useful for taking notes in classes. The bookkeeping class works on adding machines and learns the basic steps in keeping business records. 75 Mrs. Mary Stephens-Typing I and II, Shorthand I5 Mrs. Duane McCallan-Typing I, Bookkeeping, Freshman English.
