To top-off their im- pressive record the team captured first place honors in the state Cross Country meet with all six of A. H. S. 's runners finishing in the top twenty. To contrast with this years success, last year's team fAuburn's firstj did not win a single meet. Next year's team should do as well as this year's since all runners except one will be returning. Coach Wayne Murphy's runners claimed wins over Columbus Qtwicej, Troup County Qtwicej, and Lee of Montgomery Qtwicej while absorbing two defeats to Lanier. Auburn also competed in the Callo- way Garden's Meet and the Troy Invitational Meet taking third in this meet. ' ' u -'.'.'. n u u. -.--.-in...- I I Q 4 -: fEiE5? The Math Department teaches a Wide Variety of subjects to prepare students for any future. General Math, Business Math and Law are offered in the vocation- al curriculum. These arc useful for students interested in going into business instead of college. Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Senior Math are the col- lege preparatory courses. These are offered in an accelerated program now beginning in grammar school. When this program is finished the students can enter college calculus. This year a Se- nior Math series should take the student beyond calculus. Regular courses prepare students for basic college math. Auburn University has quite an influence on Auburn High School, especially in the emphasis on math. A college course in computers is offered to high school stu- dents With an apptitude for math. One can't be good in his field if he can't express himself clearly with good grammar. Each class has a vocabulary book, a grammar study, four novels, and a literature book. American literature is studied in Ju- nior English and English literature is studied the Senior year. Included in the English Department is an interesting course in speech and drama. HISTCRY Coach Sentell Harper-Government and Economics, P E Mrs Willis World History, Alabama History and Civics, jr English, Coach Bobby Brown-Alabama History and Civicsg Mrs Inez Edwards American History, Alabama History and Civics The History Department has three required courses: Civics and Alabama History, American History, and Gov- ernment and Economics. These are state requirements and are the only required courses besides English and P. E. in the school system. World History is also included in the depart- ment as an elective. These courses are intended to make students Well informed citizens. LIBRARY The library is an important facility for every part of the school. lt is particularly important to history and English students. This year's library has expanded room and more books. It served several temporary uses such as band and chorus room. The library uses student helpers. Nlrs. Gholston-Librarian. Auburn High has an advanced scien- tific program of courses from basic science to difficult courses usually taken only by those who will need them in college. ln spite of obstacles this year, the classes have progressed Well Physical Science offers a basic in- troduction in chemistry and how a car runs . lt is an elective usually taken in the ninth grade. Biology opens up the World of nature-plants, animals, and humans. Chemistry is generally taken in the eleventh grade and Physics in the twelfth grade. BUI LANIGUAGE Auburn High School has a new language pro- gram this year. Beginning with French and Spanish I, the lessons are taught by the use of films and tapes. Electronic headphones are used for better hearing and to enable the student to hear himself. In this program more emphasis is put on oral work than has been previously. The student should take all three years of the language to be prepared for a college course. There may be a French IV class in the near future. Spanish III was new this year, but it may be extended to four years also. Foreign Language students also have an opportunity to learn something about the country whose language they are learn- ing. There are fringe benefits such as the French and Spanish caroling at Christmas. Mrs. Charlotte Ottis-French I-III5 Mrs. Elizabeth Bekus-Spanish I-III. ESS The Business Department includes Typing I and II, Shorthandl and Bookkeeping. This year they have expanded their facilities and now have a small room in which they will have business machines such as calculators. Students learn basic skills of the business world. At the end of each year awards are presented for excellence in typing and shorthand which can help students obtain jobs. These awards are based on tests given to measure the number of words typed or taken correctly in a certain length of time. Shorthand is very useful for taking notes in classes. The bookkeeping class works on adding machines and learns the basic steps in keeping business records. 75 Mrs. Mary Stephens-Typing I and II, Shorthand I5 Mrs. Duane McCallan-Typing I, Bookkeeping, Freshman English. VOCATIONAL P PHYSICAL E The P. E. courses had a very flexible program this year because there was no equipment and the gym was incomplete until later in the year. The boys 'played outdoors and helped to ready the grounds. The girls hoped to begin team sports and tumbling second semester. The new gym will be divided during classes but opened lengthwise for basketball games with stands on the sides. P. E. is closely related to the com- petitive sports program. The boys who participate in atheletics have P. E. sixth period. The cheerleaders work hard on their formations and cheers this period. Mrs. Nancy Tipton-Girls Physical Education Coach Wayne Murphy-Boys Physical Educa- tion. Vocational Agriculture and Home Eco- nomics have unlimited possibilities in their new surroundings this year. The Home Ec Department has alarge sew- ing room, a living room, and a modern kitch- en. Home Ec offers units in Art and Child Care as well as in the basic sewing and cooking skills. The Auburn Vocational Ag program puts more emphasis on mechanical skills than agricultural. Every boy in class has a proj- ect. This can now be a job using vocational training instead of a home project. Mr. Kil- lough helps to place the boys in suitable jobs. These vocational courses are supported cooperatively by the federal and state gov- ernments under the Smith-Hughes Act. We have been inspired by our new opportunities, and in turn, hope we have left a high standard for those who follow. We have acquired a feeling of togeth- erness, a class spirit and sense of responsibility that no preceding class has known. We have tried to set a good example for underclassmen, yet have not boasted our superiority! Through originality and hard work as a class and as individuals, we have received nearly every honor offered by our school. We enthusiastically supported our teams and band hoping that other classes will continue to do so. ln years to come we will all cherish memories of Auburn High School, old and new. 80 Linda Sue Battle Linda Her voice was ever soft, gentle, and low--an excellent thing in a Woman. We tackled the task of building a homecoming float with high spirits and energy. Our hard Work resulted in a first rate float which was surpassed only by the seniors . lt is the responsibility of the sophmore class to build the Opelika bulldog for the Burn the Bulldog pep rally.
