THE 1970 BULLDOG AUBURN HIGH SCHOOL AUBURN, NEBRASKA Education is one of the most rewarding experiences we will ever have. We. as the students of Auburn High School have shared many experiences. Through this sharing we have communicated and from our communication have understood one another. The times we have spent together have been characterized by happiness and victory, but we have also known times of anger, anxiety, and defeat. We will never be able to make these events reoccur, but we will be reminded of them day after day. This book has captured between its covers many of these experiences, and as we glance through these pages, we will be reminded of the events, the happenings, and the faces of the year which began a new decade. 2 ACTIVITIES Back Row: Roger Harms. As this same time in London a woman who had been convicted of ill treatment of her step-children, one of whom had died, was murdered. Yorkc’s fine ability and leadership skill helped make the 1969 Bulldogs the team they were. Tom Welch was selected to the All-Conference team in the Ak-Sar-Ben Conference as a back. Tom provided fine leadership for the Bulldogs all season. Jim Beatty was a three-year letterman and was also a leader on the defensive charts. Jim had the respect of his teammates which helped to make him the good leader he was. 42 All Conference awards given by Coach Shoff to Tom Welch, Kurt Kent, Dennis Rippe, Dennis Brady, and Bruce Sherman. Exceed Expectations The Auburn High Varsity, with one of the smallest teams turned out in years, overcame that obstacle to compile a 5-3-1 record. An extremely tough defense was credited with much of the Bulldog success. While they kept the score down and the pressure on the other team, the Red offense used a combined air and ground attack to average 14 points a game to the opponents eight. The Bulldogs placed a total of five men on its two all conference teams. Fullback Dennis Brady, sticky Bulldog guard Kurt Kent, and defensive tackle Bruce Sherman were named outstanding in both the Twin Rivers and Ak-Sar-Ben conferences with defensive backs Tom Welch and Dennis Rippe also named to the latter list. Brady, Kent, Sherman, and Rippe will all be back next year, and they along with 24 returning lettermen will form what looks to be a Bulldog powerhouse. Under Coach Leo Dietrich, the JV’s added to the bright football prospects for the next few years by displaying a high-geared offense which racked up 201 points, an average of 40.1 points a game. This coupled with a stingy defense led to a successful year. The Bulldog Frosh under Coach Chuck Stoner completed their second straight undefeated season with a 4-0 record. The frosh also used a very potent offensive machine to over-power their opponents. With the characteristically tough defense keeping the enemy off the scoreboard, the frosh completed their season in fine fashion, adding to the bright future for Bulldog gridders. The senior class of 1970 has reached the first plateau in their pathway of life. They now seek new challenges-new horizons for the future. As seniors they realize that they must not lose what they have accomplished: They must not turn their backs on their family, their church, or their community, but they must face the challenge-the challenge brought forth by a real world. It will be up to them: it will be their responsibility to become the leaders of tomorrow, to solve our pressing problems, and to promote their ideas and ideals. As the senior class marches together for the last time, they will be looking ahead toward the future, and looking back, not without sadness as the many happy times they shared together as a class. The halls of Auburn High will no longer echo with the footsteps of the class of ’70, but the memories and examples that they left behind will long remain. 103 Although this year followed a familiar pattern of previous years, it was unique. The experiences and memories of the 1969-1970school year are now recorded in the 1970 BULLDOG. 104
