There was nothing to do now but go in and face the music, disagreeable as it might be. After fumbling about the key-bole for some time, be finally succeeded in finding the opening, and then quietly entered. There was really no need for caution, as the light was already burning. lie looked up the stairs expecting to see a white-robed figure standing there. Hut the ball was vacant. It wjis the work of a moment to pull off bis shoes. He then quietly made the ascent, skipping the steps which be knew creaked loudly when stepped on. At last he reached the landing, after waiting several minutes for courage, he entered.
