Your annual staff hopes that as you look through this book, you may recapture some of the events that were most memorable to you. Remember . . . ... The shock of getting that unexpected ‘A’ on your Algebra test! ... Finally making ‘A’ League after three years in ‘B’ League. . .. That special Week of Prayer that made a lasting impression on you. ... All those fun and crazy times with those unique and unforgettable friends. Then there are the times that are best forgotten ... ... Applause when you drop your plate in the Cafeteria. . .. Spilling punch on your date’s new dress at the Banquet. ... After the Banquet, leaning down to plant a forbidden kiss on her cheek just as she turns her head so you get a faceful of hair. The good and the bad times all make a lifetime of memories. We hope that, with the records of those times permanently sealed in this book, you will be forever able to recall the joys of this year. Center your life in God and reach out to the friends you know and those you are just meeting. You will know true joy, wherever you go. Student cooks catered better-than-usual fare (or maybe it was the outdoor appetites). Between meals, explorers combed the beaches and tunnels for adven¬ ture. The weekend provided an opportunity for many of the seniors to make some lasting friendships and rela¬ tionships that proved to be memorable. An outstanding year it was, by the impact the class of 1983 made upon the school. SENIOR RETREAT - 17 SENIOR ACTIVITES RICKY ALLEN 3 years at AAA; Senior Spiritual Vice; Band (11). All of these things are included in the various Bible classes taught here. Bible is what makes our school, a Christian school, dif¬ ferent from a public school. Learning more about the Bible and about our Church doctrines are not the only things our teachers want us to gain from their classes. They hope that we develop a relationship with Christ and an understanding of the world and those around us so that we will be better people for it. 44-BIBLE HISTORY THE PAST COMES ALIVE Walking through History for some is exciting. Exploring the Northwest, fighting in the Revolution, learning the culture of China. To others it is not as fun but Mr. Miller seems to bring a little bit of excitement to it, whether he is marching with his map pointer, singing “God Bless America”, or just standing on his desk to help em¬ phasize a point. If you would talk to Mr. Miller he would admit the reason he is not dull is because he reads TIME, and he urges everyone else to do so too. HISTORY-45 fir There are a variety of opportunities in the LRC under the authority of Mr. Drieberg. Students who use the facilities wisely can get full service from the LRC staff in locating information and producing items for reports, or displays. Students who work in the LRC appreciate Mr. Drieberg’s direction and they fulfill duties and take responsibility willingly and eagerly. He’s a good boss, the workers enjoy their job so much that some work overtime just to finish daily assignments. An improved career center and a new computer are ’83 additions to the LRC. What does the director have planned for 84? I I fit fit fit LEARNING RESOURCES CENTER 46-LEARNING RESOURCES CENTER Spelling, grammar, punctuation and pronunciation-these are ingredients for good use of any language. Mrs. Crays, Mrs. Rittenbach, and Mr. Krenz give reading and writing assign¬ ments to sharpen our skills in our mother tongue. Down the hall, Mrs. Andrews tries to get students to speak and under¬ stand another language. Their knowledge of English will help their Spanish fluency and conversely, learning Spanish im¬ proves knowledge of English grammar. Even if we have spok¬ en English since w e first learned to talk, there is always need for improvement in communication. ENGLISH AND SPANISH ENGLISH AND SPANISH-47 MATH AND SCIENCE Spady and Mr. Rittenbach teach algebra, geometry and Computer Science. Mr. Rittenbach also teaches physics and Miss Toop teaches biology and chemis¬ try. 48-MATH AND SCIENCE In math and science classes, information is sequen¬ tial, Low test scores might be the penalty if we sleep or daydream in class or skip a day. Labs and videos help make science classes more interesting. But those worksheets . . . ! MATH AND SCIENCE-49 ivi BUSINESS EDUCATION . . . PREPARING FOR THE OUTSIDE WORLD In terms of getting a job right after school and helping a person through college, the skills gained in Business Edu¬ cation are perhaps one of the most important that can be learned here at AAA. Typing alone, taught by Jean An¬ drews and Mary Willison, is a necessity that you will use for the rest of your life, whether it is typing term papers or typing a letter home to mom. Accounting, which is taught by David Allen, is a skill that you will use for personal finances as well as for anything involved in business. Busi¬ ness Math, taught by Jean Andrews and Office Practice by Mary Willison are other business classes that are of¬ fered here at Auburn. 50-BUSINESS EDUCATION INDUSTRIAL ARTS . . . STUDENTS LEARN THE PRACTICAL ARTS Many activities take place inside the Industrial Arts building. When walk¬ ing into the building, you may see students huddled over their drafting desks. You can hear the whine of machines, and smell stain and sawdust from inside the woodshop room. The building is divided up into three main departments. Arts and crafts and woodshop are taught by Bob Freitas. Ed Spady directs machine shop and welding, and auto mechanics is taught by Bob Farver. INDUSTRIAL ARTS-51 HOME ECONOMICS . . . TOMORROW’S HOMEMAKERS ? Home Ec. is supposed to prepare you for homemaking. Judging from the frequency of clouds of smoke and charred creations, there will be a few hungry husbands in the next generation. The bachelors seem to have a better record for success, so maybe they can survive. Sewing machines got a workout second semester as stu¬ dents translated paper patterns into wearables. Lifestyles and tastes are constantly changing, but a knowl¬ edge of the home arts will always be useful. 52-Home Economics P.E. is . . . EXERCISE !! Whether you’re shooting hoop, running laps or stretching your muscles, all these are a part of exercise. Physical Education is a big part of the activities that go on here at school. There are always lots of things you can do for exercise, now all we have to do is find time in our schedule and get with it. Physical Education-53 MUSIC DEPARTMENT A PLACE TO NOTE! To some the music Dept, is the cultural center of campus but to many it is a social hang out if not a 2nd home. Most any time you walk into the music Dept, your ears are as¬ saulted by a mixture of piano, voice and in¬ struments, all sounding at once in sometimes not-so-perfect harmony. But by tour time things seem to pull together in a musical way. 54-MUSIC DEPARTMENT AVIATION WHY WAhTTO BE A PILOT WHEN SHOW UP I WAMT7DSE A PILOT BECAUZE ITS A FUN JOB AVID EASY TO DO .TWAT2 WHY TWEflE AflE SO MAMY PILOTS FuY NS ASOUNP TH 2£ Days. This was a chance for all the new students who might be homesick by now to get to know each other better. After singing a few songs together everyone enjoyed listening to Pastor Worley begin his sermon with a story about when he was our age. After lunch everybody went on various hikes. These hikes ranged in difficulty from a leisurely one mile stroll around a small lake to a grueling seven and a half miles to Owyhigh Lakes. Coming home was something no one will forget. Of all the four buses driven up to the mountains two of them became terminally ill, forcing all the students to become even better acquainted by crowding into the remaining two vehicles. After an enjoyable day it was nice to come back to our own campus. 58-MOUNTAIN OUTING Z.K. BANQUET YE OLDE ICE CREAM PARLOR This year for the Z.K. Banquet, the cafeteria became an ice cream parlor. Candies and old-fashioned rasberry punch was served before the Italian banquet dinner. Abraham Lincoln (David Allen) started the entertainment followed with a song by Kelli Miller, and a saxophone quartet by Debbie Camp¬ bell, Greg Dietrich, Steve Heinig, and Tracy Rowell. The program continued with Kim Baze, Tami Bauer, and Chrissy Walker singing a trio “Mr. Sandman”. “The Gents”, Kurt Kennedy, Reini Grellmann, Brent Hinshaw, Tracy Rowell and Ted Wileman, presented “The Entertainer”. The last act was “Ma He’s Making Eyes at Me”, sung by “The Beauty Shop Quartet”, Bunny Ha milton, Loni Smith, Denise Erwin, and Maria Reiber. From the cafeteria everyone went to the chapel for the full length movie “Cheaper by the Dozen”. The evening turned out to be most memorable and for many, it seemed too short. Z.K. BANQUET-59 AMATEUR HOUR A NIGHT OF CLASS New York came to life in Rainier Auditorium for the 33rd annual C.L. Amateur Hour. Scott Bushnell, in tie and tails, pre¬ sented the wonders of that magic city, the Big Apple. Three equal prizes where awarded as well as one people’s choice award. Among the winners were: “Anything You Can Do”, a duet by Maria Rieber and Tami Dietrich. Also placed among the top three was, “Who’s on First”, by Alan Nelson and Scott Davis. A third prize and the people’s choice award was presented for “Scamper”, by the percussion ensemble (Sonya Manullang, Kurt Kennedy, Kelli Kennedy, Kari Brody, Natalie Eyestone). Our little journey through New York proved to be not only entertaining but also educational. 60-AMATEUR HOUR AMATEUR HOUR-61 FALL FESTIVAL Imagine your best friend completely disguised and unrecognizable amidst a setting of unusually masked people. The students used a lot of imagination in adapting to the theme of masquerade. The usual booths like putt putt golf, the jail, cotton candy, and the hayride were accompanied by a car smash, a kissing booth (chocolate kisses just don’t live up to the real thing) and a pac man booth. The entertainment for the evening was a magician act where Mr. Koehn almost got his head chopped off but didn’t, followed by car¬ toons. Finally the booths were taken down and put away for another year and once again the gym returned to normal. 62-FALL FESTIVAL FATHER DAUGHTER BRUNCH ENJOYING A DAY WITH DAD The large banquet room at Andy’s Auburn Station was filled with laughing and talking as the girls and their dads waited their turn to go to the buffet. This is a special day for the fathers and daughters to be together. After a good meal everyone met in the chap¬ el for the program. It was patterned after the famous Newlywed Game and hosted by Rein¬ hold Grellmann. The audience enjoyed hear¬ ing what the fathers and daughters really knew about each other. The contestants were Kari Brody, Tami Bauer, Linda Blake, Denise Erwin, Shanna Harrod, Jill Rupert, and their fathers. Velona Smith, the scorekeeper, awarded Tami Bauer and her father the $50.00 first prize. FATHER DAUGHTER BRUNCH-63 CHRISTMAS BANQUET . . . ‘TIS THE SEASON . . . There was not a trace of snow to be seen as each couple made their way from Nelson Hall over to the cafeteria in the pour¬ ing rain. But upon entering the cafeteria, the atmosphere was dramatically changed into a feeling of Christmas. The whole dining room was dimly lighted by candles at each table and there were brightly colored Christmas lights everywhere. In the back was a house filled with all kinds of toys with a real live Santa—(Russell Hanscom, Sr.) He patiently endured each couple who sat on his knees long enough to get pictures taken. After an enjoyable Christmas dinner, everyone made their way over to the chapel to watch the movie “Chariots of Fire”. 64-CHRISTMAS BANQUET ICE-SKATING GRADUALLY GRACEFUL! Since there are no frozen ponds in this part of the country, an indoor rink is the best place to practice. As novices tried for the first time, experts showed how it is real¬ ly done. Falls and slides were quite fre¬ quent, but fun was also quite abundant. A.S.B. BACKWARDS WEEK SCHOOL SPIRIT REVIVED MONDAY-Green socks with purple pants and an orange shirt-that’s for CLASH DAY. Anderson’s team turned out quite well this season due to good playing techniques and teamwork. Faculty seem to have slowed down, not being quite as fast as usual. They still played exceptionally well, only having Hal- vorsen’s team beat them the whole season. For the rest of the teams there was good participation but that just wasn’t quite enough to win that first place title. The academy farms presently employs 2 students but plans on increasing employment as the farm is estab¬ lished.
