Z.K. Open House Z.K. Open House gave Auburn Academy students a chance to venture beyond the limits of their corner of the world for an evening. With the theme, It ' s a Small, Small World and a little imagination, we visited Europe, the Orient, Hawaii, Mexico, and Africa. Creating the illusion of world travel was a program of song, storytelling, an oriental dance, and, afterwards, a tour through a miraculously transformed Nelson Hall. (It might be said here that getting the dorm back to normal was also a miracle). Following the dorm tour, refreshments typical of the countries we had visited were served in the cafeteria. In a cafeteria decorated for Christmas, and with a holiday menu, ASAAA Courtesy Banquet was the finale for the annual Courtesy Week. Five girls and five guys previously chosen by the student senate were presented roses and boutonnieres in recognition of their habits of courtesy. Some other students received cash prizes for their courtesy posters displayed in the hall during Courtesy Week. Following dinner and the awards, Mr. Bob Ellis from Bush School in Seattle presented slides from his bicycle trip around the world. 24

Picture Rainier Auditorium filled with genuine Auburn Academy hillbillies. They come for a night on the town, a look at the bright lights. Straw hats, temporarily freckled faces, and hard-times apparel show up in abundance. Booths, set up and attended by clubs, departments, and other organizations, beckon them to part with their pennies in return for the big chance—skill turned to great profit. Prizes are won—edibles, chewables, blowables. The more daring risk their lives in the Death Leap. The occasional sound of the bell indicates that yet another he-man has successfully demonstrated his brute strength to his admiring, pig-tailed companion. Settlement of longtime grudges is easy at the dunking booth. Feuding countrymen can avenge themselves by merely drenching their antagonists. Footsore hillbillies relax and view turn-of-the-decade movies, munch on vege-stew and bread, or just marvel at the variety of humanity passing by. Fall Festival—it ' s the stuff that hillbilly dreams are made of. 23
