S. Lo, M. D. 18 19 i 20 Bible Camp Meets at Sunset Lake 21 I remember the year 1975 very well. It was the year I read two of those memory-training books. I for¬ get their titles just now, but as a result of the mnemonic devices described in those books I can tell you what I had for breakfast the morning of Thursday, February 20, 1975. Amazing? It was just the same as what I’ve liked to have for breakfast every day these last twenty years. Nevertheless, for me Moments to Remember is a fitting theme for this 1975-76 yearbook. This was the school year I took a trip to England to check up on some old memories, and create a few new ones. The first weekend back I had a chance to share some of the new memories with you at Friday night vespers. I don’t know whether you were interested in my trip or not, but you listened. And the memory of you listening and caring because you knew how important it all was to me, that’s a precious memory. That night, you’ll remember, I read John 10:40-42, NIV. Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. Here he stayed and many people came to him. They said, ’Though John never performed a miraculous sign, all that John said about this man was true. ’ And in that place many believed in Jesus. ’’ Jesus apparently understood all about memories and their strange powers. In taking the crowd to a place associated in their memories with John the Baptist, there was stirred in their minds remem¬ brances of John’s words about Jesus. And in that place many believed in Jesus. ’’ Poignant memories in a familiar and friendly place prompted many to decide for Christ. How I hope that your memories of AAA will ever stir in you greater love for the Saviour. And how merciful the Holy Spirit must be. Jesus said, the Holy Spirit will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 14:26. So the Holy Spirit can work on our memories. And when I think of how the memory works, surely it’s a mercy. Memory can cause bad moments-to-remember to lose their horror and be finally erased. Memory can surround good moments-to-remember with a brighter and brighter golden glow. Such a merciful process must be the touch of the Holy Spirit. But you can object that if memory is so selective, then we must distrust all history and biography. Don’t worry. That’s why we keep careful records. Like yearbooks. Let this book keep for you all the names, dates, facts, and figures. You can go ahead and enjoy your memories, your own private mo¬ ments to remember. Roy T. Gee Pastor 23 ■ ivities : f ' ' 7 . ... What moments do you remember most about this school year ? Moments like those nerve-wracking ones just before a semester exam? Or the quiet tone of the bell resulting in a sudden reaction of flooded halls as you patiently pick your way through? Or what about the simple Hi or land smile exchanged as you pass a friend in the hall or on the sidewalk? Remember waking up to the determined jolting noise of the alarm and half-consciously formulating thoughts as to what makes this day different from the day before and reasons why you should rise and meet it with a smile. Minutes later you step out from the warmth of the dorm, and casting your eyes to the heavens to see if it ' s still-Taming, meet the crisp slap of the wet morning air against your face as it escorts you to breakfast. Or maybe you ' re one who remembers the fright and trepidation of choir or Sylvan tryouts or one who won’t easily forget your first vocal or instrumental solo in front of everybody. Remember all the crazy fun we had at the Fall Festival or the Sunday morning when Elder and Mrs. J hosted a huge pan¬ cake breakfast which included the production of the famous ' 76 pancake ! Who can forget all the football and soccer games played in the persistent rain and the soaked muddy sight of those who stubbornly played through to the end. Remember all the Sylvan, Band, and Gymnastics Tours with all the hilarious hours spent on the buses including the pil¬ low fights and such? We remember, too, events like Christmas Caroling, ice-skating, or the Biology Field Trips. Among all these fun times, we’ll have memories of the special, dignified moments like the Messiah , C. L. Amateur Hour, Z. K. Open House and all the other formal banquets, climaxed by the recollections of Graduation! However, most important, we remember all the strangers which, in the course of this school year have developed into lasting friends, friends with whom we have so closely worked, played, studied and prayed. So, all these moments— the happy and sad alike—with the reminiscences of those friends we shared them with, fuse into our memories to last a life¬ time. It has been, therefore, a challenging opportunity for the Rainier Vista staff to capture the memories each of you will keep of AAA. We would also like to thank you for your co-operation in posing whenever necessary so as to make this year¬ book of special interest and lasting value to each reader. May God bless each of you as you continue to prepare for a life of service. Sincerely, Ken Roberts, Editor Rainier Vista - Dates, Deadlines, Drudgery, Done! Ken Roberts. Toop 52 Dave Fiedler: Off the top of my head Wishful thinking 5:00 Sunday morning: my ilarm goes off. 5:02: I’m running across :ampus in total darkness and i heavy drizzle with my plas- ic All Weather Tennis Balls in ne hand and my racket in the ther. So what if the sun loesn’t come up until 7:45? Vho cares if it’s raining ? This s the only chance I’m gonna ave to get a court today and here’s no way I’m gonna ness things up by sleepin’ ate. 5:03: I can see that the line s short, only about fifteen ;ids. Not too bad, with any nek I’ll be playing by 11:00, of ourse I’ll have to skip lunch n order to finish the set, but at east I’ll get to play. 11:05: I finally made it to he front of the line, just nother half hour and it’s all nine. Things have been quiet dl morning; two quick little hunder showers and only even people tried to cut line, ortunately six of them were mailer than me so it was no ig problem. 11:45: I’d sure like to put in n ace right about now. Bet I could with that trick serve I picked up watching Jimmy Connors three weeks ago, of course I haven’t been able to get anywhere near a court since then so I s’pose I really oughta warm up a little more before I try. 11:47: The score’s love- forty. I gotta try that serve. Just watch me go an’ slam my racket into the ground. Oh well, I’ll chance it. 11:48: Anybody know how well that Wonder Glue stuff works ? I was gonna get a new racket pretty soon anyway but this bit about losing my place after sittin’ in line for six hours is a real kill. The above account is slight¬ ly exaggerated, of course, but the fact that our two tennis courts are inadequate for the size of the school is hard to deny. This isn’t a complaint, mind you, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say that if, somewhere out there in Fantasyland, there is some¬ one looking for a good deed to do and or a great tax writeoff I’m sure we could come up with something. Jordan P. Radonovich M.D.: Your Medical questions answered What is the Spirit of 76 ? “No Shave (?) Month” In case you’ve been wondering why you’ve been seeing so many stubby goatee’s and barely visible mustaches, th$ answer is “No Shave Month.” This C.L. sponsored activity en¬ courages the men of Witzel to try their luck at growing a beard. The contest started at the beginning of Thanksgiving, allowing everyone about 2Vi weeks to sprout something. (Anything?) in the last Zetta Kappa meeting, the idea was brought up that the girl’s should follow the guy’s exam¬ ple and also sponsor a No Shave Month. How about it, fella’s? Instructors Instruction This ski season when you see fellow students decked out as ski instructors, don’t be alarmed. They are only part of a class offered for the first time this year on the art of instruction. Approximately 12 of the students taking the class passed the final slope test, teaching each other the basic steps and downhilling it. The class met on two Tues¬ days, and a Thursday, not to mention two cold days of on the slope training and teaching. The reward for all this? Prestige and a free lift pass. Loni Fredeen The “Spirit of ’76” has definitely taken over our country, but exactly what is this spirit? Can it be more readily defined as a com¬ mercial trap rather than patriotism? Stores “from sea to shining sea” display aisle after aisle of Bicentennial shirts, pens, books, and so on. Magazines contain offers for everything from “Betsy Ross’ thimble’’ to ‘‘Martha Washington’s wig.” Are we misrepresenting this attitude for patriotism, or is it merely a reflection of how our “land of the free and home of the brave” really feels towards this celebration — a way to get prosperous at the expense of others? Apparently so, although it proves how little we have changed in 200 years. Paul Revere, famed for his desperate message of warn¬ ing, pocketed four shillings as payment for his midnight ride. Is this the true spirit which prompted America? Patriotism is defined as a love or devotion to one’s country. I don’t see even a vague resemblence to the mad rush of Americans who invent new ways to make money during this year-long holiday. It seems to me that the birthday of our country deserves a moment of rememberence of the struggles which accompanied our development, and a spirit of thankfulness for the long life we have had. The longing for freedom which previously drove our forefathers to the shores of this land, should be the same point of view which today envelops our festivities. A long look back to see from where we have come, and a longer look forward to see and help control where we are headed, should be in¬ corporated into our com¬ memoration of America’s birth. Auburn students help build Mexican churches Dr. Radonovich, I have eard that a high sodium diet lay be harmful to your ealth. Is this true? Yes indeed, no doubt about . A small amount, however, □ season your food is not oing to hurt you a bit. In fact, ou need a little salt everyday ) stay healthy. What’s that you say? No alt shakers in the cafeteria ? hat’s absurd! No kidding? he freshmen fill them with lilk so they take them away, h, it’s not always freshmen? ell I suppose not, there are always a few irresponsible up¬ per-classmen running around loose. Obviously someone doesn’t know much about health or they wouldn’t carry on these frivolous activities. In this case I would offer the following prescription: While eating your lunch, maintain a constant surviellance on the surround¬ ing tables. If you should happen to see someone actual¬ ly disposing of their milk in such a manner, walk calmly up behind him and strangle the idiot ! The forty-five minute long pro¬ gram began with the march of seniors. Little did any four-year senior realize it would pass so quickly. Registration day of f 72 promised only four high-pressured years in which we suddenly had to grow up. Looking back on it, we’re amazed at how much these four key years have contributed to our physical, mental, social, and spiritual growth and maturity. The principles of discipline learned during four years of classes, bells, cafe¬ teria lines, worships, chapels, grades, roommates, work, and so many new friends can but play a vital role in equipping us for the varied responsibilities which we will inevitably meet. We now move on reflecting only occasionally upon the important lessons learned here, which nevertheless have become part of our lives. If nothing else, this four-year era made one thing very clear—Education is life! HE Administration Mr. Smith, though usually in the Business Office, recalls some pleasant hike What Age is Best? As an 11 year old on a Wisconsin farm, I distinctly re¬ member saying almost aloud one day, ’’Why should any¬ one ever want to be any other age than 11?” Now I can look back and smile at my contentedness. Though I didn’t realize it then there were better days ahead: the day I earned my first money and then the day I first open¬ ed my heart to the Lord, and of course the day I entered the academy. Life’s greatest decisions are firmed up during the ages 14-18, the choice of a life work, the choice of a God and an ideal for a marriage partner. Leaving the nest is rarely painless; among other things it’s a unique mix of the uncertain, the turbulent, the enthralling. On balance, for most of the students found in these pages, 1975-76 will ever be one of the best years.
