In Appreciation John C. Justis and Atlantic High School have been synonymous expressions for the past thirty years. When you mention one, you naturally think of the other. Descended from an old native Eastern Shore family, Mr. Justis has been a resident of Onancock since birth. Graduating from Onancock High School in 1925, he entered Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Virginia, graduating with a B.S. degree in 1928. That same year he married Josephine Harris whom he had met at Lynchburg College. Mr. Justis obtained his Master’s of Arts from Duke University in 1940 becoming the first shore principal to hold the Master ' s degree in Accomack County. He served as a teacher at Exmore-Willis Wharf School in 1929 and at Onancock High School from 1930 to 1937. In 1937 he became principal at New Church until February of 1941 when he transferred to Temper- anceville staying there until June 1942. In the fall of 1942 Mr. Justis became principal of Atlantic High School. During his years at Atlantic High, Mr. Justis has seen many changes and improvement among which are dressing room facilities for Physical Education classes and athletic teams, hard surfaced tennis and basketball courts, and the addition of the gymnasium which had been a dream of his and his patrons for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Justis have one daughter, Mrs. Richard Johnson, who resides with her husband in Parksley. Mr. and Mrs. Justis live a quiet life in a gracious old home on Kerr Street in Onancock. Mr. Justis main avocations are reading, gardening, fishing and managing a tropical fish business. Culminating a career of forty-five years as an educator in Accomack County, Mr. Justis now looks forward to his well-deserved retirement years. With great pride and gratitude, we, at Atlantic High, wish to recognize his past achievements and express our deep appreciation to him as one who has devoted a lifetime in the service of others. His countless friends wish for him many years of continued enjoyment, contentment and pleasure with his beloved wife, Jo, as he begins the best years of his life. A quotation enjoyed by Mr. Justis and one that has been a guiding force in his life follows: I will pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defeat it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. Although as principal Mr. Justis will no longer serve us, yet we assure him his influence, leadership and guidance lives on in the lives he has touched through the years. We sincerely hope that in traveling Route 13, he WILL pass our way again and stop to chat awhile. 15
