C H ARLES MERTZ The Class of 1949 started its career in the midst of a rapidly advanc- ing student life in A.C.H.S. The Constitution Committee which provided the groundwork for the Student Council, had three Junior representa- tives and the interest of every member of the class. With the heralding of spring came the fulfillment of the promise of a prom never to be forgotten as the orchestra played Black Magic and hundreds of students, freshmen to seniors, congratulated the class on its success. At their finger-tips and waiting simply for the beginning of their Senior year was a test for the best, that of being the first class in A.C.H.S. with a Student Council. 1 PAGE 22

Just over our threshold, as it Were, was the sunlit, buzzing, bright-colored, busy World. Long bars of golden sunlight slanted through an unguessed gap in the hills be- hind us to touch with magic the very tops of the trees over our heads. The sheen of the precious metal was over the land. Do you know, he said suddenly, I believe vveire on the right track. It isn't the gold. That is a bait, a glittering bait, that attracts the World to these shores. It's the count1'y. The gold brings them, and out of the hordes that come, some, like us, will stick. And after the gold is dug and scattered and all but forgotten, We Will find that we have fallen heirs to an empire. BOOKII Oh PAGE 21

Yes, the same class that started off its career so well in its Junior year established quite a name for itself in its Senior year. With the student council a progressive reality, the class endeavored to make it a success. Music in the gym and cafeteria were introduced and other worth-while projects were started. The Observer , which formerly occupied only a Weekly page of a local newspaper, blossomed into a four-page spread planned and Written entirely by students, many of Whom were Seniors. It's Dreamtime was the theme of the ever popular Senior Prom and it was acclaimed a success by all. As graduation approached, the class grew more aware of its im- portance as the namesake of the 49ers who opened Wide the golden gate of the West, for this theme was carried not only by the Herald , the com- mencement program and the Class Night play, but also by the Seniors themselves as they left their golden days behind and prepared to become prospectors of life.
