This 1964 edition of The TIGER is, therefore, attempting to preserve the memories of the past school year. We hope that this pictorial record of today's realities will make a richer and more meaningful memory as the many tomorrows come to all of us. Before going further we wish to express our thanks to the staff and Miss Busch. Without the cooperation and help of them and especially our capable and untiring advisor, this record of memories would not have been possible. Now, without further ado, we proudly present The 1964 TIGER . . . Marilyn Tadlock Rhonda Dean Dedication We, the Senior Class of Atkinson Community High School, wish to dedicate our edition of The TIGER to our Parents and to the experiences we have shared. We feel that our Parents deserve this dedication because of their hard work and patience during the last 12 years. We are very grateful for their guidance, which has enabled us to be where we are today. Through our own co-operation and hard work on class projects we have made our years together successful. The knowledge and friendships we have gained over the years have helped us to become the Senior Class of 1964, and attain our goal of be- ing well-rounded individuals with an opportunity for success in the future. --The Senior Class In Memory John F. They were as follows: President, Gary De Causemakerg Vice-Preisdent, Steve Searsg Secretary, Kathie Verkruyseg Treasurer, Ronnie Carton. 3. Those elected to Student Council were: President, Jim Buysseg Vice-President, Iris Simon, Secretary-Treasurer, Ierilyn Stormg Representatives, Gary DeCausemaker and Keith Carton. 4. Leading the Varsity cheers from the senior class were Gay Claeys, Lories Neuleib, and Kathie Verkruyse. 5. Kathie Verkruyse was crowned Queen of our 1963-1964 Homecoming, and Frances Cauwels was chosen as our attendant, 6. The highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom held on April 25, 1964. Now, as alumni of A.H. S., our thoughts will return to our high school days, and, with renewed vigor, we will strive for a bigger and brighter tomorrow. Prophecy One fine May morning, in the not too distant future, an old and decrepid Robert Beauprez can be seen hurrying around packing his suitcases, making telephone calls, and most irritating, picking up his toupee, which is always falling off. At last every- thing is ready, his hair is in place and he is off to catch the plane that will carry him to Denmark. You see, he has won the Pulitzer prize for his literary contribution, Intimations of a Senior Class. This book has been a tremendous success because of its theme--a picture of everyday life and the varied occupations that make up the complicated world in which we live. He bases his book on the occupations which the Atkinson senior class of 1964 has engaged in. We are especially privileged to be able to print a rough outline of his literary accomplishment. David Cathelyn is a carpenter. Several years ago he undertook the task of building a new water tower for a small village in Illinois and it has now become known as a work of art entitled, The Leaning Tower of Atkinson. Cheryl DeMay is now a driving instructor, due to the fact that she was always praised for her safe driving habits. lt seems she is very liberal when one of her students drives over a boulevard. Jerilyn Storm and her boss operate a large Black Angus cattle ranch East of Geneseo, Illinois. She is his part-time secretary also. During the past few years, this corporation has added some new members. Sheryl Harris is engaged in the management of a large plum orchard. She finds it a time-consuming job, but she has as- sistance from a lot of little plums. Stanley VerStraete has really made a name for himself. He was recently promoted from Vice President to President of lnven- tory Dispersement in a large toothpick factory. Diane Carton is a home demonstrator for the Ironrite Mangle Corporation. This career has proved to be a very successful one for her, due to her ability to captivate the interest of the modern homemaker. Jim Buysse, honor student, graduated from the University of Illinois with an engineer's degree, ln his spare time, he can be found teaching basket weaving. Andrea Jennes is known the world over for her singing ability, She is the fifth member of that well-known group, The Crickets. She is also the First Lady's personal hairdresser. Eileen Buysse, known for her great agility in high school, is now a prominent member of the Olympic team. She was awarded a gold medal for her great victory over Oghlo Kiebneb, the great Russian star. Gay Claeys is a prominent psychologist, and is living in Hawaii. She is extremely dedicated to her career and is a great suc- cess. Her engagement to a well-known fisherman was recently announced. Rhonda Dean, after two months at Western Illinois University, gave up her chance for great fame and came back to Atkinson to marry the town butcher. Iris Simon is happily established in her solid gold furnished home, which she acquired by pulling all those gold-filled teeth. She is married to her former employer, Dr. Garvard Gunk. Gary DeCausemaker is a cartoonist for that popular outdoor magazine, Field and Scream. His favorite cartoon character is Long Arm Charlie, who is really Dennis Van Meenen. 26 We find that Janet DeSutter is principal of an elementary school, where she is practicing her administrative qualities, which she picked up from her Alma Mater. Of all things! Monster Minnaert is a cop! Mike's red light flashes immediately as he chases down those turnpike violators. Keith Carton, alias Scrounge, now designs tombstones and he offers special rates for former classmates and teachers. The Drag Racing World has claimed Marv Cauwels for his extraordinary ability in the field of mechanics. I-Ie also takes a spin about the track in his moments of leisure. Torn Nolan is presently gaining experience in the law field by working under the guidance of Merry Pason. Such a challenge! Lories Neuleib has completed her nurse's training. She is now absorbed in completing her experiments dealing with the study of monsters. Her thesis on the subject will soon be published. Denny VanMeenen, known as Long Arm Charlie, has entered world wide competition and is noted for his famous words you should have seen' the one that got away. Steve Sears graduated from the University of Illinois also. Pee Wee is going to put his talents to use rebuilding Alaska. Marilyn Tadlock now has a newspaper column entitled, Tell it to Marilyn, where she advises people on how to Love 'em and Leave 'em. Frances Cauwels fell in love with long-distance, and is a telephone operator. Late at night, she can be found carving love messages on telephone poles. Kathy Verkruyse has her own TV fitness program. She keeps housewives slim and trim while they do exercises to the tune of Ugly Fat Go Away. Roger Goreth has just signed up as a crew member on Mr. Hales PT boat. He is the first person who ever demolished a jeep with a torpedo. He blames this error on his faulty contact lenses. Darrell Walters has been elected Henry County dog catcher and is keeping the county clean and free of mongrels. Ronnie Carton holds the world record for bushels of corn per acre. Last year he raised 300 bushels per acre. Chuck Ulrick is a millionaire concrete tycoon, who credits his great fortune to his invention--concrete combs and brushes. Keith Causemaker now goes by the name of Hopalong Causemaker. He is always accompanied by his wonder horse, Casa- nova, who is of great assistance in rescuing fair damsels in distress. We should like at this time to express our thanks to Mr. Beauprez for allowing us to print this. H. S. On the following Friday we had our first class meet- ing with our sponsor Mrs. VanHamme. We elected our President, Linda Reilingg Vice-President, Rick Clarkg Secretary-Treasurer, Norma DeMay. On the same day we were officially initiated into A. H. S. Lynette Tabor and Cheryl Berschorner were elected to cheer for the Junior Varsity team. Rick Clark and Lynn Haars represented our class in Student Council and Karen Nicol was selected to be the freshman Homecoming attendant. Our class party was held January 4, 1964. We went to Rock Island and watched the Harlem Globetrotters. We enjoyed the excitement of our first year at A. H. S. We hope our next three years will be as pleasant. 36 sophomores entered the doors of Atkinson High School on August 27, 1963. Although we lost Jay Saylor, Jack Griffin, and Mary Specht we gained Cindy Causemaker, Dennis Baker, Patty Schaefer, and Dave DeBrock. At our first meeting, supervised by Mr. Bernard, we elected our officers as follows: President, Joe Buysseg Vice-President, Roger Cartong Secretary-Treasurer, Danny Smith. Our Student Council represent- atives were Danny Smith, Joe Buysse, and Sally Sue Floming. Sally Sue was also our sophomore Home- coming attendant. Johnetta Lackey and Lynda Arnold were elected to the Junior Varsity cheering squad. We, the Sophomores of 1963-64 have enjoyed this past year at A. H. S. On August 27, 1963, 44 jolly juniors entered the hallowed halls of A. H. S. ready to start our third year of high school. During the course of the year, we juniors had to wave bon voyage to some of our fel- low classmates. We were sorry to lose Diane Brumas, Rita Locke, Kathy Yackley, Sally Ericksen, and Veronica Meulebroeck. However, we were happy to welcome back Billy Hamer. Mr. William Schehl, our class sponsor, presided over the first class meeting which consisted of the election of officers. Those elected were: President, Mary Lou Billiet, Vice-President, Ronnie VanOpdorpg Secretary, Marvin Sleafordg Treasurer, Dick VanOpdorp. The junior class was well represented in many different types of activities. Our Homecoming attendant was Sandy Egert. Elected Varsity cheerleader was Jill Carmichael. Representatives for the Student Council were Mike Nutt, Mary Lou Billiet, and Richard VerHeecke.. As a result of class unity, diligent strife, and ingenious minds we were able to produce a memorable prom. We, the juniors, have enjoyed this past year at A. H. S. and are eagerly awaiting our final year. Class Snaps if-1-M ww M fi-L 1 ..,.q Mfg' gag., A .-v 1. A sg' . This committee began at once to plan for the an- nual event. The Snakedance and Bonfire on Thursday, October 3, brought school spirit to a peak and everybody left with a hope for victory. On Friday night, October 4, the Tigers were host to the Cambridge Vikings for their Homecoming game. The guests entered under goal posts decorated with helmets bearing the players names. Their attention was drawn to the stage where they saw a green and gold football field stuffed into a background of white tissue paper. After the Coronation of King Mike Minnaert and Queen Kathy Ver- kruyse, who reigned over the 1963 Homecoming Festivities, everyone joined in the Grand March played by the Comets. 1 E Homecoming l e Sweetheart Dance .
