Class Huslory Ne, the senuor class of l957, realuzung that our remaunung days at Atkuns are numbered, pause amudst our many and varuous actuvutues for a reflection over the past four years Alot has happened to us suncethatmemorable day un September of l953 when we arruved on the Atkuns campus We have spent many days un the halls of Atkuns some good, some bad, some happy, and some sad But no matter what each day brought, all of them combuned make up the History of the Class of 57 Though we as freshmen were green to hugh school lufe, we were eager and enthusiastic to get unto the swung of thungs here at Atkuns, so Immediately we uouned the variety of extra curricula actuvutues offered here These Included dramatucs, band, glee club, and sports Not only were we actuve extra currucularly but also scholastucally Thus was evudent by the fact that several of our number frequently led the honor roll and were awarded honor certufucates un the sprung Finally June came and a year of hard work and fun was over We left school wuth a great antucupatuon for the fall when we would be sophomores After a restful and delightful summer, we agaun arruved on the Atkuns campus Wuth a year s experience un hugh school lufe, we got rught down to work This year a number of us were promoted to the advanced glee club u h I 5 number uf-.eluded Lefhq Gwyn Frances Cockerham, Betty Puryear, Ruth Moses Joan Woods, Theotuas Kelly Betty Rhynes, Hattue Benson, Dorus lngram Shirley Belton Treva lsauah, :duth Caldwell Tyrone Boyce Zeola Baldwin, Corrie Puckens, Mary Pearson, Delous Deberry Wullue Jones, Leon Havner, Thurmond Dubois Several ofuswere also promoted to the advanced band These were Carolyn Hargraves, Clara Bauley Gwendolyn Newton, Wullue Adams Nathan Cook, Barbara Pannell Gloria Bess Leon Smith Katherune Feemster, Marulyn Leak, and Eugene Belton A few of our strong and husky boys began playing football wuth the C ame l s Some of these were Franklin Tullman Bullue Nance Allen Black Thurmond Debous Wullue Jones and Gerald Dozuer David Archue and Bullue Nance ouned the Camel cagers and helped the team to wun the state champuonshup Not only dud we do our 'ob well un the departments of musuc and sports but we also took an actuve part un thus year s homecomung festuvutues Gwendolyn Newton was our candidate for the much coverted Muss Atkuns Hugh Crown purpose and goal toward whuch we were working Although our scholastuc duties demanded a great deal of our attentuon, we stull had tume tor extra curricular actuvutues Representing us un the advanced band were Barbara Pannell, Gwendolyn Newton Ida Patterson, Constance Howue Carolyn Hargraves, Katherine Feemster Delous Busnop, Leon Smith, Eugene Belton, Gloria Bess Leon Caldwell Clara Bailey Wullue Adams, Marulyn Leak and Ann Brown Hughlughtung thus year s actuvutues was the homecomung events We elected Marulyn Leak to represent us un the contest for Muss Atkuns Hugh We partucupated un other varied actuvutues among whuch were the Y Teens, Jr Red Cross, dramatuc club, football, basketball, and baseball Our strenuous scholastuc endeavors dud not go unrewarded, however Theotuas Kelly Gwendolyn Newton June Simmons, Joan Kunard Frances Cockerham, .lean Hayes Barbara Pannell, Betty Puryear, Clara Bailey Dorus lngram Bessue Luttleuohn Barbara Rice, Shirley Belton Letha Gwyn Katherune Feemster, and Curtis Duxon were inducted unto the Crown and Scepter Club The sprung of thus year was clumaxed by the gala Junior Senior Prom, whuch was the most outstandung affair of the year The dance orchestra furnushed the musuc Our contrubutuons to thus group were Eugene Belton, Leon bmuth and Wullue Adams As the year rolled to a close, we felt that we were well on our way to becomung an outstandung class vie launched unto our senuor year wuth only 2l7 of the 455 students who arruved at Atkuns four years ago as freshmen Begunnung un September several of the senuors were appounted to posutuons of leadership un the organs zatuons of the school George Hull was elected presudent of the senuor class Letha Gwyn, presudentof the senuor Y Teens Theotuas Kelly editor un chuef of the Maroon Wave , Curtis Duxon president of the Student Govern ment And now the tume draws near when we must leave our beloved Atkuns we are both confudent and reluctant Wuth deepest gratitude to those who have helped us up thus rugged traul, welowertheludof our trunk of memorues of our truals as well as our triumphs of our losses, as well as our gauns, memories to be fuled away un our cabinets of fond reminiscences, to be recalled at wull GWENDOLYN NEWTON TH EOT IAS KELLY Hustoruans l . . . , . .
