A V- www- Y. , ,,,-.,,., m,,...,.ne ,,,-,..-, . c.,-.v..,.w..,e........-.. .- CLASS HISTORY lf we could turn back the hands of time of l952, we could see an excited class entering high school. Com- ing from the four elementary schools of the city, we were a large group. Now we were divided into sixteen sections with sixteen homeroom teachers. After we had become acclimated to our new school home at Atkins, we began participating in all the extra- curricular activities including sports, clubs, and music groups. At homecoming time the first year, we elected Mary Glenn to represent us in the contest for Miss Atkins High. By this time ten of our classmates were members of the advanced band. These members included: Jerry Brooks, Barbara Cornelius, Doreen Goore, Miriam Gra- ham, Donald Jones, Robert Laury, Michael Peoples, Delois Rader, Gwendolyn Spease, and Kenneth Williams. Only one of our classmates, Lloyd Ellis, made the varsity basketball and football teams. Those who received honor certificates for their scholastic ability were: Hiawatha Brown, Janie Greenwood, Doreen Goore, Wivona Murray, Rudine Ray and Gwendolyn Spease. We managed to pull through algebra and Latin and go on to the tenth grade. Our basketball and football teams, coached by Mr. Oldham, Mr. Ervin and Mr. Washington, were the state champions. We were very proud of our boys because they worked hard for this honor. This year marked the year when the following students made the advanced glee club. Among these were: Betty Counts, Marguerite Drummond, Clifton Hines, Bertia Johnson, Carolyn Johnson, Willie Jones, William Koger, Robert McCollum, LaMarr Proffit, Delois Richardson, Shirley Searcy, and Loretta White. Hiawatha Brown,Miriam Graham and Andrew Reynolds made their first appearance on the stage in a mystery- comedy play, Romantic Rickey. At last we felt important. We were Juniorsl Representing our class in baseball were: Curtis Gullick, Harry McGee, Lloyd Ellis, and William Johnson. Football team: Donald Bruce, Roland Penn, Andrew Reynolds , and William Johnson. Those students who were inducted into the Crown 8. Scepter Club, the honor society of Atkins, were Betsy Greel'1e,Janie Greenwood, Eleanor Hairston, Wivona Murray, Elizabeth Smith and Louella Solomon. IV At last the time had come. ln 1956 we were full-fledged seniors. We have come to find out that being a senior is not all a bed of roses as we had thought. Instead we find ourselves slaving over French verb forms, Trig functions, and Physics notebooks. Carrie McConnell was the only one of us to star in the mystery comedy play, Murdered Alive. Robert McCollum is president of the senior classg Robert Shaw, Vice-President and Josephine Griffin, sec- retary. Walter Farabee was elected president of the Student Council and Robert Laury is VlCe'pI'eSident . Janie Greenwood is Editor-in-chief of the Maroon Wave, our school paper. Donald Bruce, Lloyd Ellis, William Johnson, Robert McCollum, Roland Penn, Andrew Reynolds, Herbert Stanback, Hubert Stanback, Albert Ford and Ernest Tanner have shown their ability as athletes by participating in the various sports at Atkins and bringing Atkins many victories. Miriam Graham, a member of our class, was crowned Miss Atkins High during the half time activities of the homecoming game this year. The clock hands show us that our time at Atkins is nearly gone. We realize at times that we could have used our days to better advantage, but we sincerely believe that our years spent here have contributed immensely to insuring a better future for each of us.
