It is now l960. I have just received a letter from a former classmate of mine. It began: Dear Reatha , I received your last letter requesting me to inform you of some of your former classmates. lt took some doing but I finally came up with this. Nellie Davis, a flight nurse, takes most of her flights with Charles Johnson and Monticello Hunter. Alexander Barber finally got himself an army career and Nancy Brown and Gloria Bitting are stewardesses. Hiawatha Brown is Governor of California while Kenneth Williams is Secretary of Treasury and Clark Brown is Secretary of State. Claudette Coleman isa wealthy dress designer, Johnny Crawford, a famous doctor and Willie Cunningham,a prominent lawyer. Robert Laury finally became a radio announcerand Marguerite Drummond is signifying in every- body's business, she's a switchboard operator. Andrew Reynolds is now a doctorand Ericsteen Jeff- son is a dentist. Napoleon Horton is doing a good iob of managing Cavana Hotel along with the assistance of Clarence Gilliam, Shirley Searcy, and Melvin Scott. Gwendolyn Jones and Mary Glenn are dancing their legs off while William Koger sings his heart out. Doreen Goore finally got married to an engineering student and Karen Hayes is master of them all, she's the manager of the Mademoiselle Dress Shop. l was down there the other day and was very surprised to see that Mary Lois Williams, Claudette Kinard, Elizabeth Smith and Delois Shuler were employed there. Walter Farabee is an architect and Patricia Covington runs a Beauty Salon. Out here in Oklahoma Wiley Charles is the editor of one of our best dailys. Working on the same paper are Barbara Cornelius and Bessie Clinkscales. Curtiss Gullick is an ace player for the Dodgers and Carrie McConnell is a golf champion. LaMarr Profitt turned out to be a fine engineer and Glenn Cornelius manages the airport. Elwood Poole and Delois Rader are Social Investigators and Peggy Ray, Joe Ann Reaves, Delois Richardson, and Loretta White are Public Health Nurses. Of course you know that Janie Greenwood is very famous for her cure of the common cold. Wivona Murray is a lab. technician. Eleanor Hairston finally married you know whom and the last time l heard her family was still increasing. Walter Wilson and Eugene Wolfe are business consultants and Juanita Williams and Betty West- moreland are stenographers. Ervin Clinton owns a bus company. Joe Coleman is a brickmason and Jacob Holland is a doc- tor. Miriam Graham owns a Music Studio and Verna Belcher and Barbara Shelton finally are hired as music teachers il pity the poor childrenl. Josephine Griffin is now the wife of a mortician and Edith Benson reaches Commercial Arts. David and Willie Lyles own c gas station and Richard Davis is a l-'ealth Inspector. Virginia Bailey and Nettie Attucks are dieticians while Carolyn Johnson and Wilhelmena Anderson are successful businesswomen . Before I close I must commend you on the fine job you are doing of teaching mathematics over at Sanford. I saw the write-up in the paper of you the other day and it was very interesting. As for myself I'm Superintendent of Nurses at Washington Hospital. Yours truly, Margaret Wilson Prophetess A V- www- Y. , ,,,-.,,., m,,...,.ne ,,,-,..-, . c.,-.v..,.w..,e........-.. .- CLASS HISTORY lf we could turn back the hands of time of l952, we could see an excited class entering high school. Com- ing from the four elementary schools of the city, we were a large group. Now we were divided into sixteen sections with sixteen homeroom teachers. After we had become acclimated to our new school home at Atkins, we began participating in all the extra- curricular activities including sports, clubs, and music groups. At homecoming time the first year, we elected Mary Glenn to represent us in the contest for Miss Atkins High. By this time ten of our classmates were members of the advanced band. These members included: Jerry Brooks, Barbara Cornelius, Doreen Goore, Miriam Gra- ham, Donald Jones, Robert Laury, Michael Peoples, Delois Rader, Gwendolyn Spease, and Kenneth Williams. Only one of our classmates, Lloyd Ellis, made the varsity basketball and football teams. Those who received honor certificates for their scholastic ability were: Hiawatha Brown, Janie Greenwood, Doreen Goore, Wivona Murray, Rudine Ray and Gwendolyn Spease. We managed to pull through algebra and Latin and go on to the tenth grade. Our basketball and football teams, coached by Mr. Oldham, Mr. Ervin and Mr. Washington, were the state champions. We were very proud of our boys because they worked hard for this honor. This year marked the year when the following students made the advanced glee club. Among these were: Betty Counts, Marguerite Drummond, Clifton Hines, Bertia Johnson, Carolyn Johnson, Willie Jones, William Koger, Robert McCollum, LaMarr Proffit, Delois Richardson, Shirley Searcy, and Loretta White. Hiawatha Brown,Miriam Graham and Andrew Reynolds made their first appearance on the stage in a mystery- comedy play, Romantic Rickey. At last we felt important. We were Juniorsl Representing our class in baseball were: Curtis Gullick, Harry McGee, Lloyd Ellis, and William Johnson. Football team: Donald Bruce, Roland Penn, Andrew Reynolds , and William Johnson. Those students who were inducted into the Crown 8. Scepter Club, the honor society of Atkins, were Betsy Greel'1e,Janie Greenwood, Eleanor Hairston, Wivona Murray, Elizabeth Smith and Louella Solomon. IV At last the time had come. ln 1956 we were full-fledged seniors. We have come to find out that being a senior is not all a bed of roses as we had thought. Instead we find ourselves slaving over French verb forms, Trig functions, and Physics notebooks. Carrie McConnell was the only one of us to star in the mystery comedy play, Murdered Alive. Robert McCollum is president of the senior classg Robert Shaw, Vice-President and Josephine Griffin, sec- retary. Walter Farabee was elected president of the Student Council and Robert Laury is VlCe'pI'eSident . Janie Greenwood is Editor-in-chief of the Maroon Wave, our school paper. Donald Bruce, Lloyd Ellis, William Johnson, Robert McCollum, Roland Penn, Andrew Reynolds, Herbert Stanback, Hubert Stanback, Albert Ford and Ernest Tanner have shown their ability as athletes by participating in the various sports at Atkins and bringing Atkins many victories. Miriam Graham, a member of our class, was crowned Miss Atkins High during the half time activities of the homecoming game this year. The clock hands show us that our time at Atkins is nearly gone. We realize at times that we could have used our days to better advantage, but we sincerely believe that our years spent here have contributed immensely to insuring a better future for each of us. The team was under a new coach and it used a new system. With these changes the Camels ended with a successful season. With determination and through hard work, the team , compiled a record of four wins, two losses and one tie When the season started 'there were only eight letter-men returning. This nucleus consisted of Lloyd Ellis, Nathan Cook, andWilliam Johnson--backs, Hubbard Alexander and Billy Nance--tackles, Monroe Johnson and Franklin Tillman--guardspand Andrew Reynolds--center. After considerable work by the coaching staff the team emerged: ln gram and Penn--ends, Alexander and Nance--tackles,Tillman and Johnson--guards. The backs that ran behind this hard charging line were:Cook--quarterback, Ellis and Simon--halfbacks, and Johnson--fullback. These eleven men were backed by such linemen as Jones, Werts, Green, Benson, Dunlap, Anderson, and Crosby and such backs as Adams, McCallum, Wilkins, and J. Cook. The first game was a night affair in Thomasville where the Camels were defeated 13-6. The second game saw the first vic tory for the season over Second Ward 13-6. ln its next encounter the Camels hit their stride with a sound 33-0 defeat of Wash ington of Reidsville. The team was then tied by William Penn of High Point 6-6. Gaining inspiration from this game the Camels next defeated the highly rated team from Dudley of Greensboro, 13-6 The traditional battle with arch rivalCarver saw the Camels lose its second game of the season 26-7. This loss did not up set the young Camels for they came back in the next game with a 13-O victory over Highland of Gastonia, The Gastonia game was the last for seniors, Ellis, Stanback, Reynolds, Penn, Johnson and McCollum Determination to give Atkins the representative team that has been evident in the past was responsible for the success of this team. The players deserve credit for this determined attitude S LK KKKKKKK. W-wfmwmm.. K V BASKETBALL TEAM This year's basketball season has been an exciting and happy season for our cagers, although the boys lost in the state meet. The boys began practice late in November and when the regular season ended in February, Atkins had defeated all schools whom she opposed, with the exception of two. This goal was achieved despite the ab- sence of four of last year's starters, Bobby Hemphill, Robert Epps, Farnsworth Hester, and Johnell Campbell. What this year's team lacked in height was balanced by superior teamwork and determination. Our opponents discovered quickly that despite everything Atkins still had the power and the spirit to win. Playing a season's schedule of eighteen games, our boys came out on top sixteen times losing only to Arm- strong Tech. and Second Ward. When tournament time arrived in March, Atkins was again stamped as the team to beat in the District Tourney and was somewhat favored to win the State Crown. At the state meet in Durham Ligon High of Raleigh defeated the Camels in the first round 6l-53. lt was onlythe third loss against high school foes that the Camels suffered all season . . Despite the fact that Ellis, Tanner, and Stanback are ending their high school careers, the Camels will re- turn to the hardwood next season with this yearstarting lineupand promising re-intorcement of this season's junior varsity men .
