Greenies! This was the cry on the lips of some of the Atkinites as we, the freshman class of 1949, entered the halls of this institution. Almost four years have passed since that memorable day in September, and many of our number have passed off the scene. Because that class is responsible for whatever pleasure you received from this book, it is altogether fitting that something of its history is known. In the field of music the following persons became outstanding their first year: Deloris Alexander, Harold Barnes, Talmadge Barnett, Louis Bellamy, Herbert Brad- ley, Nancy Davis, Monroe Falls, Eugene Gunn, Cordelia Hairston, Barbara Kinard, Willie Helen Lyles, Leo S. Morrison, James Parker, Coleman Rader, Donald Spencer, and Cordelia Turner. These were members of the first band at Atkins High School under the direction of Mr. Harry Wheeler. It is through their patience and willing- ness to co-operate and Mr. Wheeler's guidance that our school band has become one of the best in the city. Outstanding soloists in the school glee club have been: Charles Alston, Essie Blackman, 'Harry Campbell, James Cooper, David Dillard, Oscar Fri- day, Patsy Fuller, Barbara Hawkins, William Lowery, Doris Robinson, Joseph Settle, and Betty Tyson. These students have gained for Atkins High School a very good reputation. In dramatics Doris Jones, Doris Robinson, Willie Sturdivant, Annie Bristow, and Harold Richardson have entertained the student body with their ability to act. In inter-scholastic activities the present senior class has proved its worth es- pecially in athletics. Those who have distinguised themselves as football players are: Bernard Fulp, John Cuthrell, Donald Young, Daniel Foster, Daniel Thompson, David Vance, Victor Johnson, James Brown, James Ruth, David Robinson, Eugene Gunn, Boysie Cunningham, and Allen Jackson. James Sligh and Donald Young, co- captains of the 1953 basketball team, have participated in basketball for the past four years. Displaying excellent ability to lead in the various clubs and organizations, some of the members of the graduating class have established a name for themselves. Some of the clubs of which they are head are as follows: Etiquette Club, Leo Mor- rison, Dramatic Club, Harold Richardson, Student Council-Vice pres. Robert Ste- phensg Ye Merrie Stenos, Shirley Bacoteg Crown and Scepter, Leo Morrisong Senior Y-teens, Annie Bristow, Public Speaking Club, Shirley Bacote, Young Adult Li- brary Club, Barbara Kinard and Hi-Y, Eugene Preston. Journalism has been of great interest to some of the members because they have succeeded in pleasing the student body by writing interesting stories for the Maroon Wave. Bobby Moore, Doris Jones, Evelyn Roi-ie, Barbara Kinard, Andrea Thomas, and Patsy Fuller have belonged to the staff during their senior year. This year the title, Miss Atkins High , was awarded Barbara Harvey, a member of this class. The only sadness we have known during our four years stay here was the death of one of our members, James Purcell, to whom we have dedicated this volume. Our deceased classmate was fatally wounded in football practice during our junior year. So from freshmen to seniors we have had our thrills and joys, our sadnesses and disappointments, but we have looked forward to the future and tried to prepare ourselves for whatever it may hold. Shirley Bacote, Historian Jail lfllffm! fllfammf We the graduating class of Atkins High School being of subnormal intelligence land supernatural bodies, and realizing that we are by far the most important class ever to leave these beloved portals, do bequeath and publish this our last Will and Testament in order to pass on our worthless but cherished possessions to anyone who is courageous enough to accept them. Upon the wings of your imagination let your minds wan- der with me. Exactly thirty years have passed since our class of 1953 left the portals of Atkins High School. Many of the members of that class have remained here in the wonderful city of Winston-Salem to help make it a better place in which to live. As we walk down the street of success, we find a sweet breeze blowing through the trees and flowers. Our first stop is at Mayor Eugene Preston's office which is located on the 30th floor of the McPhailentot Memorial Building. Plans for this great structure were drawn up by the Charles Alston Engineering Company. In the mayor's office is Shirley Bacote. The mayor informs us that he works with a very cooperative and capable Board of Aldermen, which consists of the following mem- bers of the class of 1953: Donald Jones, Richard Gamble, James Grant, James Coop- er, and Eugene Gunn. Before leaving the McPhailentot Memorial Building, let's visit ,the Zznd floor and the office of the State Board of Internal Revenue. In charge we rind Certified Public Accountant Leo S. Morrison, Jr.. Working as accountants in lVlr. Morrison's office are Jimmie Truesdale and Earline Reynolds. Across the street is the newly built Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital. The superintendant is Dr Herbert Bradley. Among the stalf of registered and sur- gical nurses we find, Ruby Lash, Betty Ingram, Patsy Fuller, Missouri 1-lawkins, and lvlabel Blackwell. Serving in the capacity of chief surgeons are William Meroney, .John Byrd, and David Dillard. Thaddeus Rice is the laboratory technician. Aware of the tact that time waits for not one we must hurry in order to iinish our tour. In the surburbs of the city we visit WLTV, a recently erected television station. Marvin Hairston is the managing technician. Nancy Davis, receptionist for the station, greets us at the entrance. As we tour the building we find Rogers Lamp- ,kins, and Bernice Crosby serving as directors of advertisements and Barnabas rlart, Allen Jackson, and Thomas Howard as news commentators. As we continue our tour we get to the part of the tour which appeals greatly 'to the feminine members of the group. You guessed it, we are now entering Wins- ton-Salem's largest department store, Rader's, owned and operated by Coleman 1Rader. In this lavishly decorated women's apparel center we rind busy cashiers, beautiful models, and handsome floorwalkers. Doris Kirby, Mae Frances Hamm, 'and Jessie Little, beautiful models, are taking part in a fashion show on the 2nd mezzanine in which the latest styles for the summer of 1983 are being exhibited. Before leaving Rader's Department Store 1et's not forget to mention the very vigil- ant and solemn floor-walkers whom we are forever running into. Among the large staff of floor-walkers are Fred Chavis, James Cobb and James Horton. As we look down the street we see a huge sign which reads Winston Gazette. We hurry to this sign and find that this is the home of one of the biggest circulation 'newspapers in North Carolina. Entering the building we see another sign which reads, Bobby Moore, editor. Recognizing Mr. Moore's name we rush to his private office. On his desk we see a pile of newspapers. We pick one and start reading it. 'The headline reads Frank King appointed Consul to Indochina. As we turn the pages we come to the Who's Wherel' column. We find that Joseph Settles and Stella Bradshaw have left for a vacation in Reno, Nevada. Willie Sturdi- vantrand Doris Jones are in Hollywood to take roles in James Sawyer's latest pro- duction Beginning of the End. Senator Harold Richardson, home for a few days rest, has hinted that he may run for re-election. Octavia Lawson is in New York taking the leading role in Barbara Thomas' opera, Solituda . Turning to the sports page we read that Donald Young has just signed a contract to manage the Brooklyn jDodgers. Harold Barnes, Business manager of the league-leading St. Louis Browns, says that he is satisfied with the attendance so far this season, and hopes that it does- ,n't get any worse. James Sligh and James Brown are tied for the lead in the Greater Winston-Salem Golf Open. Both had a two underpar 69 on the first round. Joyce Lorick is leading the women's open with a first round 75, followed by Dorothy Jackson's very close 74. Since we have taken up so much time reading the newspa- per in Mr. Moore's office we won't have time to tour the newspaper building as we had planned. On our way out we meet Andrea Thomas and Barbara Hunter and ,Sarah Sims making a mad rush to get their assigned stories in before press time. Directly in front of the newspaper building is the most beautiful and unique floral shop on this side of heaven. It is owned and operated by Miss Barbara Kinard. Not being able to turn down the inviting odor of the sweet flowers, we enter. Doris .Parham and Hattie Howie are found making orchid corsages. Green house work- ers are Thomas Mumford, Cordelia Hairston and Bettie Booker. The chief horticul- turist for the floral farm is Louis Bellamy. After such a full and interesting tour of beautiful Winston-Salem, we are all ,very tired and hungry, so let's end this wonderful day by going to the Y. M.-Y. W. C. A. and fill ourselves to the rim with good food at a special reunion banquet for mem- fbers and friends of the graduating class of 1953. At this banquet we see many friends and classmates who will never be forgotten. Now with your permission wc would like to return to the quiet, calm confines of our homes and enjoy ourselves with the reminiscence of such a wonderful day. Along with its responsibility of assisting in problems of government, the body usually directs several projects connected with both school and community life. Each year the members conduct an orientation program for the freshmen. The new com- ers are made welcome by the council members who also serve as guides for the new pupils. Each year the group leads in the project of amassing and distributing food for unfortunate families. Through this plan the organization gave baskets crammed with groceries to fifty families in need this year. A similar project of distributing Christ- mas gifts to former Atkinites who are patients in the local sanatorium is carried out annually by the club. The money for these gifts is donated by the entire student body. This year the council conducted a new project. The group invited the student government of the Carver Consolidated school to attend a meeting held at Atkins High. Mr. Samuel D. Harvey, an executive secretary of the Urban League, was guest speaker for the occasion. His discussion of 'Tuture Opportunities for Negro Youth in Forsyth County proved interesting and profitable. Throughout the year, the Student Council has tried to add several activities 'which would improve the calibre of its group. The body has discovered a growing demand for training all pupils in intelligent citizenship. ff ,,. , 1, ,,g.w,N M, .r, s l K f N F + + , S f Qiiigf Efiquefte Club 2 Qu ,',?', . b ,Q ae vb Q .,, sr F X Q., . ,-1 .F . , N- ,X .Mg , A, f H ,mf A - , ,x ' K xA J y 4 K X A xx V f e x f x - S x 'ff c Af., - H A 4 x ' 'lf' Q Q S .' With the return of Co- Captains Cuthrell, Young, and Brindle, and such lettermen as Adams, Brown, Cun- ningham, Foster, Fulp, Griffin, Harris, Johnson, Lane, and Ruth, the possibilities were termed as great. Using these men as a foundation, Coaches Washington, Oldham, and Irvin in- stalled a new formation, the winged T and using the same stellar five-three-two- one defense, they molded these, along with a few other bright prospects, ino a grid machine which seemed destined to make a name for itself. In the opening game, although fumbles and poorly thrown blocks were predo- minant, the Camels exhibited power and spirit as they romped over an outclassed Morningslide eleven 38-0. The following week the Camels downed the highly rated West Charlotte ele- ven which handed Atkins its only defeat in the previous year 12-6. In the third game disaster struck as defense minded Second Ward team handed Atkins its first defeat 13-7. Our next encounter with the t'Rams of Gastonia was quite thrilling as the Rams fought back to overcome a thirteen-point lead to upset the Camels 19-13. Then came the traditional battle with our arch rivals, the Carver 'fYellow Jackets. A surprise air attack and a change in the starting lineup spelled victory as the Camels dominated the stastics to defeat Carver 19-0. Our next opponent, Washington High, proved to be a little opposition as the Camels ran roughshod over the weak Reidsville club. The offense of the Camels rolled into high gear as the 58-0 score might indicate. The team literally overpowered the Dragons of Dunbar High, Lynchburg, Va. Both the offense and the defense were superb in their efforts as the Dragons fell under a spirited attack to the tune of 48-6. Our last encounter was with the Panthers of Dudley High who were defending state champion. The Camels', broke the game wide open in the second half as they filled the air with passes. The Camels closed out the season with a 32-0 victory. To Coaches Washington, Oldham, and Irving we extend congratulations and appreciation for their efforts to build a grid machine representative of the Atkins High School. Saluting The State Champions 5 E Basketball Squad 1952-53 has been an exciting and a happy season for our basketball squad. Faced with the task of defending and retaining the first state championship ever won by the school, the boys began the long season's grind early in Decemberg and when the ,season finally ended in late March, Atkins had successfully defeated all schools that dared challenge the school's top position in state basketball circles. This was done despite the absence of last season's players, Vance, Gilliam, Doby and Hines. What this year's champions lacked in height was at least balanced with exceptional shoot- 'ing and superior team work. Our opponents discovered quickly that it was suicide to attempt to beat Atkins with a fast-break attack. Let's take off became the by- word of the champions and after a few minutes of play the other teams discovered themselves trailing by ten to twenty or more points. The highlight of this season's schedule was the Invitational Tournament in De- cember, involving four outstanding basketball teams. Laurinburg and Carver joined with a strong team from the Armstrong Technical High of Washington, D. C., to help -dedicate the Camels new gymnasium. This was Armstrong's first trip to northwest Carolina, though the team had made annual trips to the state for the last eight years. The first night matched Carver against Laurinburg and was followed with the Atkins-Armstrong tussle. When the final whistle had blown, hundreds of fans left the gym satisfied that they had seen one of the finest and most exciting games ever played in Winston-Salem. With Sligh and Williams scoring from all angles and Griffin, Adams and Young dominating the boards, Atkins handed the capital city team its first defeat by a Carolina team in eight years of competition. The second night's games were an anti-climax to what the fans saw on Friday. Armstrong won easily over Carver who had edged Laurinburg the night before, and Atkins handed the Laurinburg lads their second defeat in a game made close and exciting only because of our own errors. Playing a regular season schedule of sixteen games, our boys came out on top fourteen times, losing once to Carver and Gastonia. When tournament time arrived in March, Atkins was stamped as the team to beat and was favored throughout the state to retain its title. The district tournament held in the Atkins gym was merely a tune-up for the finals a week later at Rocky Mount. Thomasville, Burlington and Carver went down to defeats in one-sided games as Atkins moved a step nearer to this season's title. Paired against Goldsboro in the first round at Rocky Mount, our boys served notice of the final outcome by scoring 91 points against the sharp fshooting Easterners. Hillside of Durham made a valiant try in the semi-finals but could not overcome a twelve point lead built up in the first half by C0-Capt. Sligh and company. The finals against our county rivals, Carver High, was a mere form- ality. It was the fourth time in five games this season that Atkins had defeated their country cousins. With only Sligh, Young and Harris ending their careers, the Camels will return Ito the hardwood wars next season re-enforced with a promising crop of this year's freshman squad which lost only one game during the current season against the elementary schools of the city. . 1952-53 Record: Won 22-Lost 2 Atkins 40 Gastonia 42 Atkins 48 Second Ward 39 Atkins 74 West Charlotte 44 Atkins 49 Carver 43 Atkins 83 West Charlotte 45 Atkins 93 Dudley 42 Atkins 47 Gastonia 36 Atkins 42 Carver 45 Atkins 63 Raleigh 41 Atkins 77 Dudley 43 Atkins 79 High Point 39 Atkins 51 Carver 36 Atkins 68 Roanoke 38 Atkins 66 High Point 45 Atkins 70 Roanoke 48 Atkins 67 Second Ward 47 ATKINS INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT Atkins 55 Armstrong 52 Atkins 51 Laurinburg 46 DISTRICT TOURNAMENT Atkins 91 Goldsboro 61 Atkins 70 Durham 61 Atkins 62 Carver 43 STATE FINALS Atkins 77 Thomasville 13 Atkins 60 Burlington 40 Atkins 54 Carver 35 Total points for season: 1537 Average per game: 64.04 N 1121 A W R- 311--fm 'gil mfflffff A' - s?f :WT jp MQ? i mx . More than fifty hopeful ballplayers turned out, and after the usual spring training these young men were selected to represent the Camels on the diamondg infielders Samuel Hall, Donald Young, William Peter- son A1 Brindle, and Lloyd Ellis, outfielders Bernard Fulp, Eugene Gunn, Charles Alexander, Julius Davis and James Mack, pitchers David Harris, B. T. Williams and Thomas Mumford, catchers Marvin Brockman, James Rice and James Spann. In its opening game the Camels had a flock of jittery nerves, and Lexington won an easy game by the score, 6 to 1. Since Easter however, our boys have won three successive games, including a revenge over Lexington, and, though this write- up cannot include the season's complete record, we shall not be surprised if our Camels end the season on top of the Western Conference. Sparkling the team on its road to victory are home-run-hitting Brockman, heavy-hitting Gunn, sharp-pitch- ing Williams and Harris.
