In the first act the actors show signs of stage fright and in the Freshman-Sophomore debate three of the actors, Samuel Tucker, Marjorie Morgan and Janet Macon, tried so hard that they all fainted. Anneize Williams, Maggie Cunningham, Willie Frances Smith and Nathaniel Wiseman win Crown and Scepter Club Honor Certificates for their outstanding academic achievements. These freshmen participate in many activities during the first act and as the curtains close they show promise of being outstanding students. The curtains part for act two in September, 1947. The actors are becoming more confident, bolder and wiser now that they are sophomores. Frank Joyner, Walter Murray and James Steen demonstrate their athletic ability on the football team The sphomores give a sample of their dramatic talent as Aurelia Carter stars in The Dead of Night Once again the academic ability of the sophomore class is shown as they dominate the Crown and Scepter Club's awards day. Those who received awards were Mildred Thorton, Maggie Cunningham Anneize Williams, Willie Frances Smith, Nathaniel Wiseman and John Caldwell. In intramural basketball led by Lillie Jackson, Gertie Mack and Roselle Morrison, the sophomore girls cop the school championship. The curtains are closed on act two and the weary brain-tired actors pause for a three-month inter mission. The beginning of act three is highlighted by the election of Arneize Williams, John Caldwell, Mild red Thornton, Nathaniel Wiseman, Willie Frances Smith and Maggie Cunningham to the Crown and Scepter Club. XVe hear many timely discussions on Junior Town Meeting by Frank Joyner and Joe Thompson. Nathaniel Wiseman is elected President of the Student Council over his senior opponent. Marshall Hairston, Hazel Rhynes, and Harold Hauser are a few of the hard working members of the Student Council. Stranger in the Night finds Lois Haley and Lawton Kelly making their first stage appearance. Lillie Jackson, Willie Frances Smith and Marcellus Penn receive honors for work done in The Midnight Son while Dwight Caldwell, Charmin Hairston and Frank Joyner triumph in Oh Doctor. Two members of the juniors class enter the field of journalism as Willie Frances Smith and James Boyd become members of the Maroon Wave staff. In athletics, the junior class is well represented. James Steen and Francis Simms are outstanding on the line while Walter Murray and Frank Joyner show brilliant form in the ball carrying department Lawton Kelly demonstrates his oratorical ability by winning the annual oratorical contest. The Junior-Senior Prom, the most anticipated event of the year is the last scene in act three. Act four, the climax of this great drama finds several new actors upon the stage. These are the con servative persons who finish high school in three years. They are Bennie Martin, Willie Lou Brooks Howard Wilson, Abner Goodman, Lucy Summers and Price Freeman. The actors are now dignified and more detrmined in their efforts. Frank Joyner is captain of the football team and aided by Francis Simms, Lawton Kelly, Charles Glenn, James Steen, Walter Murray and Marcellus Penn, leads the team through a successful season. Ruth Dunlap becomes Miss Atkins High as the senior dig deep and win a popularity contest. In basketball Francis Simms is the only representative. Great contributions are made in drama as Marshall Hairston, Dwight Caldwell, Allen Holmes, Ann Martin and Charles Crumblin give thrilling performances. In the Student Council Lawton Kelly serves as president and Nathaniel Wiseman is vice president As the play nears its ending each actor has the same goal-graduation. The curtain is closing on the Class of '50 but each member of the cast hopes that the class will serve as a source of inspiration and good spirit to all future classes of Atkins High School. THE CAMELS The Atkins High Camels, led by a group of seniors had a successful grid season. From tlze first call to practice until the last game, there was an everlasting desire to win as ind'cated by the seasonls rec- ord of 7 wins and l loss. The seniors who are leaving and those who have used their years of eligibility are to be congratulated. They are James Steen, Charles Glenn, Marcellus Penn, Walter Murray, James XVebster, Lawton Kelly, and Frank Joyner. These graduating giidders played an excellent game every Friday with the support of Edward McCoy, John McDougal, Francis Sims, and Jery Crews as starters. The Camels under the generalship of Frank Joyner won the Forsyth Ccunty Football Cl'ampionship and finished second place in Western District of North Carolina Negro High Schoal Athletic Associa- tion. James Webster and John McDougal were All State, with James Steen, Walt Murray, Charles Glenn making All-Wfestern District. Much success of the Camels was due to the abl: reserves fn Aggie Sales, Paul Kellv, Herm'n Wil- son, James Penn and Walter Little who saw considerable action and performed well. These bo- s will be the nucleus of the team for the ensuing year. The coaching staff and entire squad appreciated the support given by the faculty, student body, and general public. The Camels tried to show and fullfilled the desire in every game, school spirit, sportsman- ship and desire to win. We were happy this year at Atkins to have an addition to coaching staff in person of Coach Delray Hartsfield of Tuskegee Institute, who did an excellent job. Coach Charles Washington was well pleased with superb playing of the en ire squad. He is run- ning for State Championship next year, and in the back of his head, fears no one. The season's record is as follows: Atkins T. C. .. . Atkins Thomasville Atkins Carver , . , Atkins High Point Atkins Gastonia . . Atkins W. Charlotte Atkins Burlington , Atkins Dudley . . rm , , mug., ..,.va.- -. . . 5. 1 i--7-Y-r .y .Y fx r ' ,Y Q BASKETBALL BOYS Firsl Row: Sims, Pennington, Webster, Lowery, Price. Second Row: Berry, Bryant, Vance, Hines, Penn, Mgr. Third Row: Harris, Young, Scales, Sligh, Coach Cary. Led by Co-Captains Lowery and Webster, the Atkins Cagers defeated all opposition in the Western Conference and were seeded number two in the State finals at Raleigh. In this tournament we lost a hard fought game to E. E. Smith High School of Fayetteville in the finals after winning decisions over Golds- boro and Rocky Mount in early rounds of play. So, for the second successive year our boys have been able to fight their way to the finals of the State championship. We 'are no less proud of them for hav- ing lost because we know that our boys played their best for Atkins and were beaten by a better ball club. This squad molded itself into a pennant winner despite the loss of four varsity players from last season's championship teamg their record has been a pleasant and unexpected surprise to all of us who knew the replacements needed to make the squad a conteider for the championship. We had no individual players and all were outstanding during the season, dsplaying more team-play and spirit than probably any other team in the school's history. Unmindful of awards and trophies, the squad had only one thought as it entered each game--to outplay and outscorc their opponents-an objective which they at- tained in 19 out of 23 games, including 6 tournament games. In four years under Coach Cary the basketball squads have a record of 64 victories against 14 losses in high school competition. The entire student body and the faculty of Atkins High salute the 1950 basketball squad for another fine and suc- cessful year on the hardwood and thank them for bringing more laurels in athletics to our school. Wilson The Block A Club represents the athletes at Atkins High who have earned the varsity letter in football or basketball or both. The boys are very proud of their organization and are careful to see that no outsider enjoys the advantages that have been awarded only to those boys who have spent months of hard practice in all kinds of weather and have taken the bodily punishment on the gridiron and in the gym in order to earn the coveted varsity letter. The Club is an inspiration to the many boys in our school who desire to be associated with the athletes. We point with pride to these boys, for they have brought honor and praise to Atkins, not only through victory but also in the manner in which they have conducted themselves at home and on foreign fields. It is not unusual for us to receive complimentary letters from our opponents, lauding the excellent sportsmanship exhibited by the athletes of Atkins High School. We feel that our athletes are learning the basic requirements for a successful adult life. ' u J. --7--Y-.T-wi...-, .-.,. . . ., ., ,,,,,,,,,, , W , .,,....
