Reinhardt, USN Commanding Officer fMay 1958 - December 19595 CDR Reinhardt piloted ATKA, his second com- mand, through two MSTS Summer Arctic Opera- tions and saw us safely into McMurdo Sound this year before going to the Guided Missile Division of the Bureau of Naval Personnel. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis,'Md., he was commissioned in 1941 and saw action in World War II. h CDR Buster E. Toon, USN Commanding Officer fDecember 1959 - i CDR Toon relieved CDR Reinhardt Dec. 19, l959. A graduate of East Texas State Teacher's Col- lege, he was commissioned in l942. Since then he has had duty on four other ships, serving on one as Commanding Officer. CDR Toon reported to ATKA after serving as Commanding Officer of the U.S. Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center, Dallas, Tex. lCDR louis A. Wilson, USN Executive Officer Uuly l958 - i LCDR Wilson reported aboard July 7, 1958, from the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon, where he served as advisor on harbor defense and underseas warfare. ln World War ll and the Korean conflict he served as Com- manding Officer of three net laying ships.

V t , or ' , 1- Y f- I mx.:-Vf.t,A 12' Q, -X sigaggan, -fx s t e,t Afteft an absence of two years, the ATKA returned to the frozen seventh continent, la The ATKA helped pave the way for the U.S. scientific achievements during the Inter- national Geophysical Year in the south polar region. ln a 'solitary reconnaissance voyage to immwlil -the Antarctic, December i954 to April l955, ATKA selected sites for future bases and gath- ered data that was to prove invaluable on sub- sequent Deep Freeze operations. ATKA's contribution, however, will doubt- less only assume its true proportions in the light of the future. The value of Antarctica, its stra- tegic locations, scientific possibilities and natural resources have 'yet to be fully assessed. Antarctica, the last frontier, is daily increasing in importance and ATKA will be remembered as having played an initial role in making this for- bidden continent accessible to man in his search for greater knowledge.
