The U.S.S. ATKA CAGE-35, a 6500 ton icebreaker of the famous wind Class was launched in Los Angeles in July l9HH. Her giant twin screws, driven by a 10,000 horsepower diesel-electric system, give the 269 foot ship ample power to ran her way through the thick ice fields of the far North and South. Orginally the SOUTHWIND in the U.s. coast Guard, she became the ADMIRAL MAKAROV of the Russian Navy in 1945, as part of our lend lease 2ggAto the Soviets. Returned in 1950, she joined the U.S. Navy as the with her homeport in Boston, the ATKA took part in Arctic Operations for the next four years, then in December of 195k she set out on her historic long voyage to the Antarctic. There she collected much valuable information which served as a basis for U.S. planning of the DEEP FREEZE OPERATIONS, with her homeport changed to Seattle, Washington in May 1956, she again took part in Summer Arctic Operations--this time on the Pacific side. November lst 1956 the ATKA was again ready for the Antarctic--but 9 now with company as a unit of RADM DUFEK's Task Eorce H3. BYRD,Ff USN CRETJ, is only a portion of the American research organization for the W I.G.Y., and only a fraction of the total world effort. 'In all, scientists of 39 nations will be involved in trying to unlock the yet unsolved secrets I of our earth. Eleven nations now have science stations on the Antarctic continent. The U.S. has built 7 bases, with OPERATION DEEP FREEZE I and II supplying the logistic support involved in constructing and manning them with the scientists and auxiliary Navy personnel. A OPERATION DEEP FREEZE III will commence in November 1957, and will be a mission of resupply and rotation of wintering-over parties. By the end of DEEP FREEZE IV: early in 1959, the U..S. Antarctic program for the I.G.Y- 5 will be Completed: CampS broken, and scientists and Navy men will be re- turning home.
