Dear Students: I want to express to you my personal appreciation for the many fine things all of you are doing to help Athens become a better college. Your enthusiasm and friendliness create a joyful atmosphere in which to live and work. You are tops in my long list of young friends with whom I have been associated over the years. Athens College is " on the move. " Of the following, we are especially proud : 1. Our enrollment this year (491) is the highest on record. 2. Standards at Athens College have been made higher than Southern Association requirements in admissions, graduation, faculty, salaries, faculty degrees, and general administration. High standards mean a better education. 3. The first college level program in the State of Alabama for training Electronic and Instrument Technicians began here in September I960. 4. Money has been provided for a new girl ' s dormitory to be opened in September 1961. This will enable us to take 50 more students on campus next year. 5. Special gifts ($60,000) from friends of the college have enabled us to fully complete the furnishings of Waters Science Hall — now one of the best equipped science buildings in our state.
