The constitution for the Athens High School chapter of The National Honor So- ciety was formulated in agreement with that of The National Honor Society by a faculty committee in the Spring of l93QL. The charter was granted April l2. 1934. On May 14. 1934 the chapter was installed at an assembly program by Principal E. B. Mell. A student must be a member of the third or fourth year classg must have been in the school more than one yearg and must rank in the upper third of his class to be eligible for membership. The eligible students are nominated and elected by the faculty. The purpose of the Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship. to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the pupils of the schoolf' 50 . The following require- ments are necessary for student membership: Superior mentality, good character, creditable achievement, and a commendable attitude. Each member of the Beta Club realizes the honor he receives when he is invited to join the organization. The Athens High School Scholarship Society was organized at Athens High School in the school year of 1935-36. There were twenty-five Seniors named by Principal E. B. Mell as the first members. The qualifications for membership are a minimum of seventy-five percent HA'sw and no mark below '4B',. When a student obtains this average, he automatically becomes a member. On February 12, 1943, sixteen Seniors were named by Mr. Mell to the Scholar- ship Society. The iirst meeting of this year was held Monday afternoon, March 15. Its purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community the high standards of Christian character. The local Club was organized in 1919. It is one of the oldest clubs of its type in connections with the Athens High School. Any senior. junior. or sophmore boy is eligible for membership. He makes written application for membership and after approved by the members is admitted. At present there are thirty members on roll. For the duration of the war the Club is limited in its socials. A., has only one qualification for membership-that the prospective member be a girl student of the Athens High School. High-lights of the year are the Recognition Service, held annually at some local churchg the lVlother-Daughter Banquet, and the house-party held each spring at the Y. W. C. A. Camp. Ar the present the club is composed of 21 Junior and Senior members and 10 sopho- more pledges. The society has three annual socials which are. the annual spring and winter dances and the annual girl break dance. It has ad- vanced rapidly since and is now well represented in all school activities, both scho- lastic and athletic. The high-lights of the school year are the two dances presented each year. one during the Christmas holidays and the other near the close of school. The members of the club are selected with utmost care on the basis of character, scholarship and leadership. The aim of the O. W. L. At the ends were Billy Puryear and Lowry Gillespie. while Hayes. Edwards and Andy Sterrett held down the tackle positions. Bobby Saye and Benny Lumpkin played guards. and Ted Kemp was the regular center. Charlie Owens. sterling tailback. played all but about twenty minutes of the entire season. Of the flrst string, Puryear, Gillespie. Byrd, Edwards, Sterrett and Lumpkin will graduate. Coach Alex McCaskill and Coach Eddie Harrell did a great job coaching the 194-2 eleven. and neither one of these two will be back to coach the gridiron next year. The basketball season was one of the most successful ever enjoyed at Athens High the past season, with Coach Harrell guiding the hardwood quintet to nineteen victories against three defeats. The team beat Madison. Watkinsville. and Winterville to take the Tenth District title, and journeyed to Macon for the State, where they met misfortune in the second round. They beat Grillin in their first game. but fell by a slim margin to the Perry High team. The Maroons held victories over Statham. Comer, Monroe. Watkinsville, Bogart. Winder, Winterville, Grillin, and Madison. and. perhaps the most outstanding, Navy Pre-Flight School. They lost only to Tech High. This was due to the undying spirit and good sportsmanship of the girls. as well as to the excellent coaching of their beloved Miss Nick. Miss Nicholson has been an inspiration in many hard battles. She always had a never say diei' spirit which gave the players courage to keep their chins up in spite of difhculties. Leading the team to win over half their games. Captain Sara Lewis was high scorer and the 'tmain spring of this year's Hue team. Lewis is a three year man and the undisputed star of many games. TRHIK TEHHI Athens High had one of the best teams that has ever taken the field in track. The Maroons, coached by Mr. L. C. Hickman, were strong in the dashes but were consid- erably weak in the weight division. The Maroons only had two meets during the reg- ular season and these were practice meets with the Georgia Pre-Flight varsity and a Georgia Pre-Flight class. The Maroons entered the District Meet April 23, as heavy favorites to win the title for the fourth consecutive year. The State Meet was held a week later in Macon. Ga. The results of these meets were not complete when the Annual went to press. At the beginning of the season, Benny Lumpkin was elected captain and J. B. Farr was elected co-captain. The team enters the district meet each year in the singles and doubles. M. B. Wheeler was the tenth district champion last year and reached the finals in the State Meet in Macon.
