NEW COACH HEUER SETS FOUNDATION In 1981, a new face came on the scene for the Bulldog gridders, who established the team as a competitive force in the SEOAL In his initial season, head coach Doug Heuer set the foundation for future years. Starting in the summer with a weight program, Heuer brought a new enthusiasm and spirit to the team. With an abundance of seniors (23), and returning let- termen, the team finished with a 2-7-1 record. Heuer praised his team because they never quit and always had enthusiasm They im- proved throughout the season, especially the defense who played aggressively toward the end of the year. The highlights of the season were the Homecoming win over Wellston and the upset of lackson Several players were highly regard- ed and selected to the All-SEOAL team Rick Gibson and Matt Stenson earned First Team honors Chris Cavote and Reid Thomas garnered Honorable Mention status. Rick and Matt gained additional recognition in being named to the All-District team and were Special Mention All-State This year's team set the founda- tion for future teams. The new spirit will encourage a belief in becoming one of the finest teams in the league Having to play different people at various positions allowed the reserve team to gain the needed experience. They worked hard and had the same enthusiasm anc spirit which circulated throughout the program Lower left First-year Head Coach Doug Heuer.
