The Wrecking Crew of '82 seemed an appropriate motto, but then the task of proving the name came into focus. Ergo - The tower beamed with an 82 but that was in 79, our lunior chant was Kill, kill, hate, hate, murder, murder, mutilate which deafened even the hardiest Seniors of '81. These rowdy Juniors rearranged the library, obstructed the teachers' transportation to classes, and ended this anti-Senior year by victoriously annoying Ranger Rick at the end of the year picnic. Finally, as Seniors we showed the school what Homecoming was all about with our hall decorations supported by the Wazoo Dog. The words We Will Win were adopted by the vicious crew of Senior Powderpuff girls while the Juniors begged for mercy There was an elaborate presentation by the Drama Club for the D C. Class. Were the Seniors really responsible for vandalism to the school buses? It seemed more like a contest to prove just how many cars could fit in the student lot. Nevertheless, the end of the year came with the traditional presentation of Senior Follies and the Wrecking Crew of '82 saw its last days of reign at AHS. - Robbyn Turner, '82 ARENA Editor 2 Opening Opening 3 NEW COACH HEUER SETS FOUNDATION In 1981, a new face came on the scene for the Bulldog gridders, who established the team as a competitive force in the SEOAL In his initial season, head coach Doug Heuer set the foundation for future years. Starting in the summer with a weight program, Heuer brought a new enthusiasm and spirit to the team. With an abundance of seniors (23), and returning let- termen, the team finished with a 2-7-1 record. Heuer praised his team because they never quit and always had enthusiasm They im- proved throughout the season, especially the defense who played aggressively toward the end of the year. The highlights of the season were the Homecoming win over Wellston and the upset of lackson Several players were highly regard- ed and selected to the All-SEOAL team Rick Gibson and Matt Stenson earned First Team honors Chris Cavote and Reid Thomas garnered Honorable Mention status. Rick and Matt gained additional recognition in being named to the All-District team and were Special Mention All-State This year's team set the founda- tion for future teams. The new spirit will encourage a belief in becoming one of the finest teams in the league Having to play different people at various positions allowed the reserve team to gain the needed experience. A second loss to Callipolis motivated the team to set their goals on the tournament They gained momentum, winning games against Jackson, Ironton and Waverly late in the season to secure their runner-up spot for the league title Winning 8 of their last 10 games, Athens finished with a fine 17-6 record, maintain- ing the tradition of excellent basketball at Athens Coach Fred Gibson attributed Athens' success to unselfish team play, which compensated for in- dividual weaknesses. The team stuck to a basic game pattern which took advantage of the team's strengths and hid their weaknesses Gibson found the team to be easily motivated and their attitudes made it easy for him to coach. The high light of the season was undoubtedly the team's tournament play On the tournament trail the Bulldog cagers took advantage of a hometown crowd at the Con- vocation Center to defeat Chillicothe 45-43 in the sectional final. The win granted Athens a return trip to the District Tourna- ment at Marietta College, where they faced a stubborn New Philadelphia squad The competi- tion proved to be tough but Athens hung in and simply refused to lose This determination led to a berth in the District champion- ship game against an undefeated Wintersville Athens finally fell to Wintersville, but not without giv- ing them all they could handle The 1982 cagers have a lot to be proud of as they are only the fourth team since 1953 to garner District Runner-up honors Individually the Bulldogs claimed several awards Senior point guard Brent Henry served as this year's team captain Senior Mike Croci made the Honorable Mention All- SEOAL team Steve Bruning gained the respect of many op- Eanents by providing excellent adership on the floor and has been honored numerous times On his way to establishing himself as one of the finest players in the state, Steve became the first player in the school's history to score more than 1,000 points in his career as he broke the previous mark of 992 which had been set by Ralph Nu um in 1952 Steve also set the single season record by netting 514 points. In the league Steve was voted Most Valuable Player and named to the 1st team, both for the sec- ond year in a row. He was also honored as the Player of the Year in the Southeastern District At the state level, Steve garnered 3rd team All-Ohio honors Look for- ward to the same type of leader- ship and production from Steve in 1983, as Woody Mayle and he will serve as next year's co-captains. 1981-82 Varsity Basketball and Cheerleaders Bottom row Manager Rob Coe, Kim Crawford, Mary Elis, Kristen Cornelius, lube Ross, Angie finneaity. This included a six game win streak at the end of the year to help capture the SEOAL Reserve Championship with a 12-2 league mark. Tak- ing advantage of an abundance of quickness, the team wore down opponents by full court pressure and tenatious defen- sive play They averaged 47 points per contest, while only giving up 36. Facing adversity in the final game of the season, they once again came through with a sparkling inspirational perfor- mance. Disciplinary action had reduced the squad to five players — Kevin Hagen, Bill Finnearty, Carl Matheny, Tom Thompson and Doug Welsh. They needed a win over Waverly's reserves to capture the league title outright The outcome was typically out- standing as Athens came away with a 16 point victory, playing the entire contest with just five men. The team compiled a record of 14 wins and 2 losses, averaging over 44 points per contest while limiting their opponents to 32. The team was enhanced by balanced scoring and a strong bench Coach Mark Smith was impressed by the im- provement his players made throughout the season. The highlight of the season was winning the Miller Invitational Tournament as they con- cluded their fine year This year's freshman team will undoubtedly con- tribute their talents and skills to the success and tradition of fine basket- ball at AHS. Basketball 27 The 1981-82 Girls Varsity Basketball team ended with their second straight League Championship. First year Coach Tim Smith led the ladies to a thirteen and one League Championship and a twenty and two overall record. Highlights of this year's team were: opening defeat of Parkersburg (AAA State Runner-Up for West Virginia), capturing the Athens Holiday Tournament, League Cham- pionship and Sectional Championship Offensively, the ladies outscored their opponents sixty-one to thirty-six, as well as a rebounding percentage of sixty-three. The Christmas dance was another suc- cessfully romantic occasion for the couples at AHS. It was now time for the State Marching Band Contest at Franklin County Stadium. After nearly an hour of psyching up, the band took the field in competition. They received a I or Superior rating. They were one of six bands in Class A to do so. The season was not all serious work. There was the annual Senior Night in which the band performed a show written by the Senior band members which ended with the an- nouncing of Seniors and the pinning on of mums by admiring parents. It was a great ending to a glorious season. Upper Guest Conductor Hattie Myers leads the band in the Senior Show Lower: The winning Seniors and Squad Leaders gather after the Parkersburg Contest. Junior Class 101 102 CONSTRUCTION CREW The 1981-82 school year under- went many changes One major change was converting from the former mod system to a traditional eight period day. However, the class periods had to be shortened to ac- complish this. The privilege pass, available to only high achieving luniors and Seniors, has expanded and about 140 students earned passes Using only donations and no school board money, another change came to A.H.S.: a weight training room was constructed in the gym lobby. The room was designed to house the wrestling and weight equipment. In addition to the changes Athens High underwent this year, the school also experienced a number of pro- blems One problem was the poor financial situation. In the future there may be major cuts in the curriculum, extra curricular activities, and faculty. Another problem during the year was the low percentage of people who served their assigned deten- tions. Because of this, many people ended up in the discipline class for very minor offenses In the future there may be an entirely new disciplinary system. Long range plan- ning was, however, impossible at that stage because of the changing financial situation. There were several new additions on the faculty during the 1981-82 school year Cindy Elmore, teaching English, joined the faculty along with Nancy Thompson, in the Home Economics department Along with the new additions, two people resigned from their positions Ted Bayat left to become principal at Alexander High School and Sam Henderson resigned from his posi- tion as superintendent. A new social club developed dur- Dayid McAllister, Asst Principal Scott Hunter, Dean ing the school year known as the 45 Club This club was comprised of 45 teachers who expected to be looking for other employment due to the threatening budget cuts. Kostival Kathy Mingus Barbara Evener LT) LU Nellie Newsom Barbara Taylor Rheta Mac combs Aide A very important but seldom recognized part of Athens High School is the dedicated secretaries. But during the week of April 21 they were not forgotten. Dur- ing National Secretaries Week they were remembered by Charles Yeago, who sent them flowers, the Secretaries Club who sent them each a carnation, and the ad- ministration who took them out to dinner. The secretaries' experiences range from one year to Barbara Taylor's fourteen years Barbara Evener and Linda Gabriel worked full time while the rest of the secretaries worked only ten months out of the year. The secretaries' jobs at Athens High School differed very much. The guidance office secretaries helped in doing the scheduling as opposed to the main office secretaries who typed the handbook each year, answered incoming phone calls, and basically worked for the administration. Another important person was the high school's one and only aide, Rheta Mac- combs. Mrs. Maccombs works in the foreign language lab for ten months of the year Each secretary and aide did jobs equally well and through their efforts Athens High School continued to run smoothly 110 Faculty Dr. Marion Fugate Alice Elliot, Clerk Mary Keifer Paul Gerig and William Walker Faculty 111 UNDERCLASS FRESHMEN - Raw Material The Freshmen entered AHS with great expectations and an attitude of achieving the greatness of the classes preceding them. For nearly 13 years Athens' juniors and seniors have had the opportunity to attend Tri-County where they could pursue one of the many valuable job skill areas. Tri-County is a two year program to prepare high school juniors and seniors for the job market in the field of their choice A typical day consists of forty-five minutes of academics (English for juniors and government and history for seniors), and one and one half hours of class related to an individual's field and three hours spent in the lab area. Upon graduating from Tri-County, graduates receive certification that they have spent 1500 hours in their lab area Fields offered at Tri-County: Agriculture Mechanics Horticulture Child Care Food Service Hospitality and Health Care Accounting and Computing High Skill Stenography General Office Clerical Auto Body Repair Auto Mechanics Cosmetology Drafting Electricity Electronics Machine Trades Printing Trades and Graphics Welding and Sheet Metal Carpentry Industrial Maintenance and Management Intensive Computer Management Upper right Sandy Denney, Drafting lower right Chris Henry, Stenography 134 Tri-County Upper left Steve Reeves and |ohn Hart, Auto Body Repair Upper nght Fran Yates, Agriculture Business lower left: Scott Adams, Welding Middle right Traci lackson. The week's first big event was the announce- ment of a competition to decorate a hall for each class. On Thursday night, the four classes decorated and on Friday the halls were filled with green and gold and the spirit of AHS. On Friday afternoon, the Pep Assembly to top all Pep Assemblies, took place and was highlighted by an evangelistic speech by head football coach Doug Heuer. He stressed togetherness and the words We will win! The speech proved ex- hilarating enough for the game against Wellston The ceremony for the crowning of the 1981 Homecoming Queen proved to be an emotional and ex- citing experience. The candidates were Jamie Moore, Erin Burke, Julie Ross, second runner-up Neila Rich; first runner-up Becky Ellis; and the new Homecoming Queen, Jennifer Robe. The game was hard fought by halftime. At halftime, the award win- ning Athens Marching Green and Gold gave a stunning performance for the crowd. The game progressed and Athens scored a decisive victory over Wellston, 20-6. Way to go. Dogs! The next day, the AHS Soccer team defeated Maysville to cap off only the beginning of a victorious weekend for AHS. 142 Homecoming Opposite Page Upper Right: The Athens high School Football players jump into the air after their 20-6 victory over Wellston Middle Left: Erin Burke; Middle Becky Ellis; Middle Right Jamie Moore; Lower Left Neila Rich; Lower Jennifer Robe; Lower Right Julie Ross.
