Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1972 volume:

IRE ATHENS HIGH SCHOOL The Plains, Ohio Vol. LIX In these times of uncertainty and distress there is a strong need for people to align themselves with the cause of furthering understanding, trust, and cooperation among all men. For it is from the achievement of these that the seeds of unity are planted and a sense of brotherhood among men of all races, creeds and beliefs is born. This sense of brotherhood is vital, because it is the base upon which the solutions to world problems are built. Many people realize the need for a oneness among all men, yet too few work toward attaining such a goal. They often do not wish to become involved; they find it too difficult to throw aside individual prejudices; they feel the small part they might play would be of no significance. Thus they sit back and do nothing as the problems continue to grow in number and complexity. It is time for everyone to realize that it is each individual’s responsibility to do their part to help alleviate these problems and to do this they must first strike out against disunity. No effort is too small; no effort is wasted. If everyone became involved our world would soon be a better place in which to live, both for us and for future generations in an attempt to do a small part toward attaining this goal, Arena 72 is dedicated to the theme '’all kinds of people should get together.” 2 Seniors 144 4 5 Ipiogy '■BE 6 8 Photo by Dan Dry 9 A Student’s Life There are many facets in the everyday life of a teen-ager. There’s a time for school, a time for work and a time for play. Sometimes it’s difficult for the older generation” to distin- guish the difference among the three, but we know there is a difference so we decided to prove to everyone that there is indeed some variety in our daily lives. We don’t careen along on a continual magic carpet ride. We study and work as well as enjoy ourselves. So we decided to back up our theory with ten pages of proof. So come along folks, we’re off! A student works in the an lab. 12 Steve Jagers — at work. A tune for play A studious underclassman hard at work. Athens High School — Student Speaking. You can’t tell a book by its cover. 14 Charles! Mr. Maxwell Ferguson — Dean of Students Mrs. Jeannine Stenson — Dean of Girls 29 Guidance Recognizing the individuality of each and every student is a con- cern of major importance to the guidance staff at AHS. The depart- ment attempted to meet the needs and interests of all students with varied class structures and various programs throughout the academic year. A variety of college and career assemblies were held during the year. Emphasis was placed on the importance of vocational as well as college education. Again this year the department coordinated the interact program — a once a-wcek seminar orientation program for Freshmen. Importance was also placed on the Quest program. Mrs. Karen Vedder and Mr. John Locker Mr. John Daugherty — Quest Mrs. Nellie Newsome Mrs. Anna Duhl 30 Secretarial-Library Often we don’t realize that so many things go into the running of our school. And even more we never consider, many times, that someone must do this ever-present work. Much of this very impor- tant work is done by our secretary-library staff. They have a tough road to hoe with their mountains of paper work and book work, but everything always seems to be done very efficiently. We’d like them to know we appreciate their tremendous work. Mrs. Kathleen Mingus 31 Mrs. Barbara Taylor Mrs. Beulah Morgan Non Academic Employees So many times we students and faculty tend to forget that without certain people our school life wouldn’t be possible. Of course we are speaking of our non academic employees. These arc the people who care enough to make sure our school is provided for in so many ways — our food, a clean, well-kept building, everything in running order, and the running of our buses, just to name a few things. Though we don’t always take the time to let our appreciation be known, we are grateful. The 1972 Arena staff salutes our non academic employees. Thank you all. 32 33 English In an attempt to have all students find success on their own achievement level, the representation of all materials — both litera- ture and the skill areas of grammar, composition, spelling and vocab- ulary — are presented in five phases. In addition to the required three year cycle of the English curriculum, there are available to the students, extensive elective offerings. Many speakers from the com- munity and from the University have been utilized to enrich the courses and give them depth. Several mini-courses were offered this year with plans for more of these in the future. Mrs. Pam McGaughey 34 Mr. Charles McVey 35 Mrs. Carol Patterson Social Studies To promote effective citizenship on the part of the student, now and in the future; to minimize individual growth and adjustment to social frailitics, and to provide each student with requisite skills and motivation to become a lifelong learner,” are the main goals of the social studies department. Along with the year’s cycle of study Cur- rent Social Problems,” the department also offered new courses in Comparitive Religions and the Federal Government. To spur interest in the social studies the department held a mock election, mock con- ventions, and election day studies. Mr. Darrell Ford Mr. John Daugherty Mr. Peter Lalich 36 Mr. Phil Bobo Mr. William Winner Mathematics The math department believes it is their responsibility to provide a math program for all students of Athens High. Their aim is to ena- ble the student to progress from the stage he is at, when enrolling in the course, to his maximum level. The department docs this by offer- ing courses from basic math to pre-calculus. Students capable of go- ing beyond this step may go on independent study. This year, courses in linear programing and computer programing were offered. To broaden the realm of interest, students had the opportunity to attend a variety of classes at Ohio University in the fields of data processing and computer programing. II' . 38 Mrs. Dianne Craine Mrs. Lois Jean Baby 39 Mrs. Kathleen Marinelli Science The main goals of the science department are to give a compre- hensive background in and an overall awareness of scientific phenom- ena to all students and a sense of dedication to those entering the scientific field. In addition to the health science course required of every student, the department also offers elective courses in many other fields, such as chemistry, biology, anatomy, physics, earth sci- ence and ecology. This year in an effort to increase interest in the sciences, the department offered new courses in ecology, earth science and Chemistry II. Mr. Donald Barber 40 Mr. Richard Essex Mr. Richard Shoemaker Languages This year, when the objective of making the foreign language cur- riculum still more interesting and colorful, a course in Greek was added. In an attempt to make the study of foreign languages enlight- ening as well as useful, the audio-lingual approach was used in the areas of Spanish, German and French. Latin classes studied at their own rate of speed. In an effort to teach the culture as well as the language, many extracurricular activities were offered in all the fields. Mrs. Elsa Hcffelfingcr Mrs. Lana McFarland Mrs. Pat Kendall 42 Mrs. Jean Russell Mrs. Joan Cox Arts and Humanities One of the chief aims of the Arts and Humanities course is for the student to find himself in today’s world and compare our con- temporary way of living with the days of the past. The course includes the areas of art, music, drama and literature. A chronological approach to the study of these areas was employed this year starting with primitive times and concluding with our contemporary period. Highlights of the year were several drama presentations. Mrs. Mary Jo Bowes Mrs. Vera Smith Mrs. Pam McGaughey 43 Art The main goal of the art department is to teach the basic princi- ples of art and design. Nearly all fields of art and design are now offered at Athens High. A special idea employed this year was a concentration on individual projects. Students were able to spend more time on one specific area. New courses were offered in photog- raphy, furniture refinishing and stage set design. The department en- courages both talented students and those who can’t draw” but are interested in enrolling in the various courses. Highlights of the year were various field trips. Mrs. Judy Morgan Mr. Ray Abraham 44 'Just crazy about art.' Music Music came alive at AHS under the direction of Mrs. Vera Smith, Mr. Stephen Berry, and Mr. Wilbert Lanning. Practice, work, and planning yielded successful results in Christmas concerts. Trial By Jury, spring concerts, trips to contest for the band, and a visit to the University of Cincinnati for the Chorale. Mr. Berry, in his first year, was moved by the beat of stage band, and Mrs. Smith was thrilled as the Barbershop Quartette sang Let Me Call You Sweetheart.” Most importantly, there was a revived unity within the department as in- struments and voices found harmony together. Mrs. Vera Smith 45 Mr. Stephen Berry Phys. Ed. The Physical Education Department strives to develop both a stu- dent’s abilities and interest in Physical Education through phasing general P.E. courses and offering electives in many areas such as swimming, gymnastics, advanced Phys. Ed. Leadership, and Outdoor Ed. A student must complete two years of Physical Education before graduating from AHS. Coach Gerald Inbody Coach Robert Finnearty Mrs. Judith Zipfel 46 Coach Donald Eskey Miss Joyce Agcnbroad Special Ed. Special Education at AHS was designed to help srudents become independent and contributing members of the community. Basic aca- demic subjects were covered in practical application to life and work. The most important phase of the program was the work-study expe- rience which was given to many of the pupils. As a summer continu- ation of the work carried on in the department, the classes planned to participate in vocational training at the Tri-County Joint Voca- tional School for a period of six weeks. Mrs. Evelyn Stiff Mr. William Komcr Home Economics The goal of the Home Economics Department is to make a dif- ference” in the lives of the students by developing skills and under- standing in management, consumer interests and relationships. Courses offered ranged in length from a semester to a year and cov- ered such areas as Family Living, Clothing, Foods, Child Develop- ment, and Home Furnishings in addition to the regular Home Ec. course. This year a course in Consumer Economics was added as were mini-courses in all areas of Home Ec. To add interest to the courses, many field trips were planned and student ideas employed. Mrs. Patricia Snipes Mrs. Jeannine Stenson 48 Miss Kathleen Weber Mrs. Penny Reighart Industrial Arts To develop an interest in, and an understanding of our American industrial society, its processes, products, services and occupations, is the main goal of the Industrial Arts Department. In an effort to attain this goal, new methods and ideas were continually being em- ployed in all areas. Courses were offered in such areas as Woodwork- ing, Drafting, Aviation, Electricity, Metals, Crafts, Small Engines, Graphic Arts and Radio. Highlights of the year were several in-depth projects done by some of the classes. The classes, open to both boys and girls, were enjoyable and educational. Mr. Don Anderson 49 Mr. Thomas Bowen Mr. John Deno Business Ed. The main purpose of the Business Education Department is to provide interested students with a marketable office skill. To this end such courses as Typing I and II, Shorthand I and II, Bookkeeping I and II, Business Machines and Data Processing are offered. Many students combine both college-geared courses and business courses. Non-business students may take one semester Personal Typing in order to develop a personal use skill. A culmination of the business student’s training is the C. O. E. program, an on-the-job experience offered to him during his senior year. Miss Alice Schuler Mrs. Ruby Dalton 50 Mrs. Wanda Bush Vocational Ed. The main objective of the Vocational Ed. Department was to offer students the opportunity of obtaining some form of on-the-job train- ing while receiving high school credit. Diversified Cooperative Train- ing, Distributive Ed. and Occupational Work Experience were of- fered this year, as well as C.O.E. This program now in its third year is a job training program very popular with seniors at AHS. Special Assemblies Mr. Johnson presented Charles Heller with an award at Awards Assembly. A band was hired to play at a campaign rally for Fran Lavellc candidate for Senior Class President. This was but one of several campaign tactics employed by Fran in his quest for the office. His endeavors were rewarded with a victory. 62 Famed poet Hollis Summers talked to fascinated students after reading his poetry to English Large Groups. Mr. Summers’s poetry brought loud ap- plause and many sincere compliments from students. Ex-drug addict helped students realize the many downfalls and dangers of drugs by relating his own experiences. He made many students realize that drugs arc not worth all the pain and trouble they can cause to the person using drugs or to those near to him. Shortly after his election, Mayor Donald Barrett of Athens spoke to Athens High Students about his plans for Athens and those for getting young peo- ple involved in the governmental process. 63 In a survey that the staff conducted last year, quite a few responses indicated that people wanted extra space alloted for the signing of names, so we've left this page blank just for that purpose. 64 ’Twas two nights before When what to my wondering eyes should Christmas . . . appear . . . TRIAL by JURY This year, under the direction of Mrs. Vera Smith, the AHS Chorale performed Trial by Jury.” The operetta revolved around the plot of a broken engagement. Singing the lead role was Barb Stephenson, the wronged bride to be who takes her fiance played by Carl Hedges, to court for breaking their engagement because of his love for another girl. The case is resolved, however, when the judge, played by Jon Reininga, professes his love for Barbara. Jon professes his love for Barb. Carl stands before the jury. The jury hears the case with disbelief. Chorus Under the fond direction of Mrs. Vera Smith, the chorus had a very successful year. Variety was the keyword as the activities of the chorus ranged from production of a Mod Con- cert to several more traditional performances. In addition to the Mod Concert, the chorus gave a performance at Thanksgiv- ing, Christmas and a Spring Concert. A special undertaking of the chorus this year was the performance of operettas. The operetta Trial by Jury” was especially well done by a cast of young talents. In the area of outside activities, the chorus sang at the O.U. Music Building, while the chorale went to Cincin- nati. The chorus wrapped up the year by singing for Baccalau- reate and Commencement. John and Cabot share the moment. New Director Keeps Band in Step The revised Athens High Band has a very successful year under the guidance of the new director, Stephen Berry. The Marching Band performed new and exciting halftime shows, while the Concert Band played two concerts, went to the Dis- trict Contest and came home with an excellent I” rating. Hope in their hearts, they headed for State Contest. This was the first time in six years that Athens High was represented at a State Band Contest. The Band received a 11,” a hard earned reward. This year the Stage Band performed with the Chorus in the spring Mod concert. All in all it was a very successful _ar A amain of gloom descends. 71 Now Mr. Berry, we’re trying, we really are — have a little patience, PLEASE! Talented Actors Gave a Variety Of Performances Talented young dramatists put on several performances this year at A.H.S. These ranged in nature from multi-act plays to the short one act plays. Two of the presentations this year were The Bear” and Don’t Drink the Water.” These short plays as well as all drama presentations at A.H.S. were open to the public, though high school students were especially urged to go. Oftentimes, Arts and Humanities students were given the chance to preview the forthcoming productions, a privilege enjoyed and appreciated by all the students. What should the first royal command be? EDITOR’S NOTE: Often you find things lacking in your yearbook; things that are significant to you. Perhaps it’s an assembly or a dance that was of special importance to you. It’s difficult to include everything for everybody in one book. The most we can hope to do is to try to get an overall coverage. To include each small personal detail for every person would be impossible. So this year the staff decided to lay out a double-page spread and leave it blank so that you would have a place to record your own memories. We’ve left spaces for your own photos, captions and even a space in the upper left hand corner of page 77 for you to write your own copy with headline space in the brackets above the copy block. These pages were left for you so that you will have space to include all those details which hold a special meaning for you'. In this way we hope to help you make your yearbook a more personal experience. So go ahead. The other 222 pages we’ve done for you. These 2 are all yours. Coach Gerald Inbody’s first edition displayed teamwork evi- dent in the fact that success never depended on one star player. Nevertheless, the team had its stars and an All-Ohio Class AAA first team selection in A1 Ackerman. The season opened with a 28-25 squeaker over Marietta, fol- lowed by a 38-8 win over Warren Local. Then came the lone defeat at the hands of co-champion Ironton, 28-7. After that, the Bulldogs mowed down seven successive opponents, Jack- son, 22-6; Waverly, 14-6; Gallipolis, 7-0 (that snapped a 17 winning streak for the Blue Devils); 31-0 over Meigs; 10-6 Logan (both were sweet revenge for 1970 drubbings); Well- ston, 52-12, and a season finale over non-league Circleville, 21- 8. Coach Inbody was voted SEOAL Coach of the Year and four Bulldogs were elected to the first All-District team. They were Ackerman, Mike Green, Jim Scott and Don Wood. It can be a disaster or it can be enjoyable. In the case of Coach Gerald Inbody, the results were not only enjoyable, they were downright delicious as the Bulldogs treated a home crowd of 4,500 to a 28-25 victory over the Marietta Tigers. It was one of those games that kept the fans in their seats until the final whistle. Not only was this first meal by the new coach a success, it was a preview of what was ahead on the menu for Bulldog grid fans. That was a 9-1 season, co-championship of the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League, four all-league players, four all-district players and an All-Ohio Class AAA player. Fans also got their first taste of the running and passing of the Bulldog backfield, the attack and stubbornness of the line and the flavor of the dessert that came from Gary Snow’s edu- cated toe that added extra points and field goals all season. The freshman squad will be the varsity in the next three years and they gave evidence they have plenty of budding tal- ent. Under the guidance of Coaches Don Anderson and John Deno, the Bullpups recorded 86 points while holding their op- ponents to 32. Victories came over Gallipolis, 14-6; Federal Hocking, 42-0; and Wellston 24-0. The freshmen lost to Jackson, 14-0; Logan, 6-0; and tied Meigs, 6-6. Jim Scott (80) encounters the enemy. Once the votes were in, Athens could count on: 1 — An All-Ohio Class AAA tackle. 2 — Four men on the All-District Class AA Team. 3 — Four men on the All-Southeastern Ohio Athletic League Team. Allen Ackerman, who was known to opposing backfields as the guy who broke up plays and smeared quarterbacks, and to opposing lines as the big guy who opened holes, was named All-Ohio Class AAA tackle. He was, of course, chosen for the All-League and All-District teams. Also: Named to the All-District team were Mike Green, Jim Scott and Don Wood. The Bulldogs were represented on the All-SEOAL squad by , , Stu Smith, Green, Wood, and Ackerman. AJ Ackerman: AU-StaU quality. 95 A1 Ackerman, Mike Green, Jim Scott, Don Wood. The AHS Cross-Country team ended the 1971 campaign suc- cessfully. Coach Phil Bobo led his harriers to the league cham- pionship in which 6 of 7 Bulldogs finished in the top 10. Mike Wilkinson was the individual winner with a new record time of 8:50.7. Wilkinson was the number 1 man all season, placing first in 7 out of 11 races. The speedy senior also set a 8:53 record on the Athens course against Lancaster and Iron- ton. Mark Rowland, Gene Roberts and Dan Dry rounded out the seniors on the squad. Bill Diles led the reserves to an excellent season and was the surprise runner for Coach Bobo. High points for the Bulldog runners were a third in the District meet, third in the Salt Fork Invitational, third in the Marietta Invitational and, for the first time this year. Coach Bobo was able to defeat his father, coach of Chillicothe, which he did four times. Wilkinson leads again. 96 Coach Bobo and team go into a huddle. Led by Dave Smith, who was high scorer with an average 19-3 points per game, the Bulldogs finished fourth in the South- eastern Ohio Athletic League with a 9-5 league record. Mike Green was second in scoring, averaging 15.3 points. The Bulldogs’ record would have been even better but twice victory eluded them by one point and twice by two. The Bull- dogs outscored their opponents by 200 points over the season, 1,202 to 1,002. Coach McAfee was assisted by Bob Bur- son and Fred Gibson. 98 Coach McAfee gives the team a strong battle plan. 99 Mike Green sends the tip-off into home territory. Baseball Bulldog baseball was a story of hard work and much disap- pointment last spring. Despite some outstanding performances the team had a record of four wins and eleven defeats. But four of those losses saw victory slip away from the Bulldogs by just one run. The team finished fifth in the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League. Victories were over Waverly, Wellston, Jackson, and Chillicothe. Coach James Woodell and his assist- ant, Fred Gibson, found satisfaction in the performances of many of the players. Mike Green led the team in hitting with .435 percent, while Jon Kostival batted .417 and Don Wood .327. Many of the Bulldogs went on to play with the Athens K. T. Student Council continued its progressive movement this year under President Bob Mahaffey, and advisor Mr. Ralph Nix. Some projects such as repairing the student parking lot and collection of food and clothing, were of a service nature, while others were for the enjoyment and benefit of the student body. Many students participated in the visitation program, tak- ing a day from their work to see how another system operated. The cafeteria was opened before school in the mornings for the first time for study purposes. Special assemblies sponsored by Student Council included The Expectation,” a Nazarene singing group, and Dr. Fred Luchs, a professional speaker from the Athens area. A highlight for the school was the sponsoring of an Area Council Workshop at AHS. Interclub Forum was formed of all club presidents, and was headed by Student Council Vice President, Peggy Kappes. This group coordinated activities among all organizations in the school. STUDENT COUNCIL: Front Row: Mar- garet Dohn, Sue Sheridan, Dave Smith. Contrary to popular belief, the office helpers did much more than pass out those notorious blue slips” to unsuspecting students. Their other major activities included the collection of attendance slips in morning and af- ternoon homeroom periods, and the preparation and distrib- ution of the Faculty and Student Guides for the high school. The library staff helped our librarian, Mrs. Helen Porter, in carrying out the everyday workload of the library. The AV Staff, under the direction of Mr. Joe Johnson, was busy throughout the year supplying teachers and their classes with various pieces of equipment. Program directors were Victoria Vaughan, John Locke, Russ Brashear, Jason Ryan, and Howard Clear- field. The Amateur Radio Club provided a more personal ap- proach to communication for interested students. The main ob- jective of the club was to prepare members to pass their novice license tests. FHA donated money to the Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, held a Halloween Party at the Athens Mental Health Center, and made gifts for patients of O’Bleness Memorial Hospital during the Christmas season. Alice Hunting, Presi- dent of the AHS chapter, also served as president of the Ath- ens County FHA organization, and Betty Pryor served as secre- tary for this group. FTA members used their unscheduled time to go to district elementary schools and serve as teachers’ aides. They also as- sisted high school faculty and were responsible for the initia- tion of short, mini-courses which were offered throughout the year at the high school. FTA’s activities also included attend- ance of conventions both at Rio Grande and Columbus, Ohio. In contrast to most freshman classes, we had a relatively easy initiation to high school. We were virtually free from harassment by upper classmen due to the fact that everyone was lost” during those first few days of the 68-69 school year. Dur ing the four years our class made the most of what the system had to offer in the way of extra-curricular activities, spons and, ves. even academics. As a whole we feel we have had a successful and reward- ing high school career. We look to the future with high hopes and great expectations, yet we will ref lea upon the past and view our high school days with fond memories. An editor herself could never hope to accomplish such a task. So many people contributed some- thing to the publication of this book that I could never hope to thank them each individually, though I wish this were possible. So I’ll just say thank you to everyone who played even the smallest role in the production of this book. Now I would like to thank several people who went out of their way to sec that a bunch of ideas became Arena 72. First of all to my parents. Through all of this they have been patient, helpful and understanding. I’ll never be able to repay them. Next a big thanks to the faculty and students at AHS. You are the yearbook. My thanks to my entire staff and to the fol- lowing people: Ron Docie, Scott Good, Mike Gallaway, Lucian Spa- taro, Dana Loomis, Best Studios, Russ Brashear, Mr. Shamp, Mr. Lalich, Patsy Whiteside, Tom Meters, The Athens Messenger, Bob Mahaffey, Cindy Adams, Donna Kelzoberg, John Goodwin, Cathy DcWcesc, Mrs. Edward VanDyke, Laura, Sarah and Tom Cross, Christy VanDyke, our subscribers and Advertisers. Now I’d like to say a special thanks to several people who did a great deal more than their share of the work: John Harlan, Carol VanDyke, Kathy Galla- way, Marilyn McHarg, Debbie Riggs, Anita McKibben and especially to our advisor Mr. Charles MeVey. Last but not least, I owe a very special thanks to a very special guy, A1 Butto, representative of Tay- lor Publishing Company. Without him the boat would have sunk. I hope he realizes how grateful I am. Thanks A1 for everything. 1972 Arena Staff: Front Row: Margy Baird, Laurie Hess, Kathy Gallaway, Mary Cross, Susan Slagle, Anne Klimko, Becky Mingus.
