The purpose of the guidance department of Athens High School is principally to aid the student. College-bound students are aided by the wide variety of college catalogs and bulletins and by individual counseling. The counselors put out bulletins concerning scholarships and scholarship tests, help students with scholastic problems, and help students find part-time jobs. This year the department has been enlarged by the addition of two new counselors, Mrs. Jones and Mr. Riker. Miss Lunger is in charge of the seventh and eighth grades, and holds an instruction period with each class each week. Mrs. Jones works with the problems of ninth and tenth graders. Mr. Riker aids the juniors and seniors. Dr. Bresee supervises the department and works with senior high students. (Juicfes Jjast J ie ( t ossroa cfs CLYDE W. BRESEE B.S. Mansfield State College M.Ed. There are two courses which aid in doing this. A course in health is required for all ninth and twelfth grade students. In this course, the students are shown basic first aid and the symptoms, causes, and effects of different diseases. They are taught the basic body structures and how the different organs and systems function. The physical education department increases the fitness of the students' bodies through exercise and various sports. Among the sports taught and played are softball, volleyball, field hockey, football and basketball. This year, in order that swimming might be taught, a pool has been added to the school s facilities. 22

The purposes of a school are not confined to the teaching of the basic subjects. The school nurse provides an education in good health habits and keeps a regularly updated record on each student. One of the most appreciated services in the school is that of the library. It not only provides the reference materials for school work, but also the reading books for those who are interested. The special education department provides an education in basic skills for some students. This course allows some of the students to spend half of the day in school and the other half at a job in the community. The school offers a service to the community as well as to the individual student through drivers' education classes. All of these services are necessary for the welfare of the students and the school. Aides A any JAe 7. )ay MRS. HELEN S. BOURDETTE Library Assistant under E.S.E.A. MISS EDITH HINE R.N.
