7 iro The Athens High School business and home economics departments are designed to prepare students for their chosen fields whether they be secretarial or homemaking. These courses are taught with the most modem equipment in the area. The business department teaches senior high students the fundamentals of shorthand, business arithmetic, and typing. These courses are so designed that these girls are ready to go to work as secretaries immediately after graduating. Home Economics is taught in all grades from seventh up. This course is required in seventh, eighth, and ninth, and may be taken in tenth, eleventh, and twelfth, if so desired. Home Economics teaches sewing, cooking, child care, and all other basics in homemaking. MRS. ELEANOR BIALEK B.S. JJat iwaijs JnrouaA Science The science department tries to give students a broad, general background in science. This background will be useful in their future lives, no matter what they do. This study prepares students for new technological developments, stimulates intellectual curiosity, and explains and illustrates scientific principles. In the seventh and eighth grades, the study is quite general. In the ninth through twelfth grades, the study deals with more specific areas of science. Courses such as biology, physical science (a combined course in chemistry and physics), chemistry, physics, vocational science, and earth and space science arc offered. The purpose of the science courses is twofold: to prepare students for careers in science, and to give everyone a general scientific back- CARL J. EASTMAN B.S. GLADYS WESTBROOK B.S. A student is required to take a half a year of each in seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. During this time, he is given experience in these fields and is taught something of their history. A student who wishes to, may continue on in either of these fields during senior high. The music department has several clubs. The junior and senior choruses and the junior and senior bands put on several concerts a year. The senior band plays during half-time at football games. There is Glee Club for particularly good singers and Stagehand for enthusiastic musicians. In art class, the students are taught about perspective and shading and the other techniques which make drawings seem realistic. They find an appreciation for what goes into art. The primary purpose in teaching art is to make the students more observant and more aware of their surroundings. 20
