Jatecvau Jo 7 ie Jufur The mathematics department of Athens High School has just been revised to meet the requirements of a changing world. Junior high school math prepares students for more advanced study. Seventh and eighth grade math primarily reviews elementary arithmetic and prepares students for higher math. In the freshman year students are first introduced to the entirely new concept of algebra. The fundamentals of algebra are taught in elementary algebra. Athens High School combines plane and solid geometry into a unified course in geometry which any sophomore may choose to take. A combined course in trigonometry and intermediate algebra is offered to juniors. In this unified course, students study trigonometry functions and increase their knowledge of algebra. Advanced mathematics is offered to seniors who have shown capability and interest in math. In this course, students continue their study of algebra for one semester and, during the second semester, start elementary calculus. The study of math aids the students in the development of his reasoning ability and leads him to work carefully. This new system allows the student to acquire a more thorough knowledge of mathematics. EARL K. DILL A.B. University of Michigan Geometry and Trigonometry MRS. MARIAN C. KLINE B.S. Through the social studies department, young people are taught how to live in and understand the world around them. Every high-school student will be given the privilege to vote in a few years. With this power, he is able to help maintain and shape his government. The part every citizen takes in his government will depend upon the training he has had from the social studies department. Truly we learn from the past and our own and others’ experiences. With the knowledge of the history of the world we are able to regulate the present and plan for the future wisely. 16

Courses such as biology, physical science (a combined course in chemistry and physics), chemistry, physics, vocational science, and earth and space science arc offered.
