Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1967 volume:

1967 H ienian H iens Iiyfi cScAoo AAens, CPennsiy uania I 3 7 ore w or ”cf This year, the Athenian is brought to you as a series of visions from the Lamp of Education. This Lamp sees all that has been brought, is being brought, and will be brought to you in the future through education. Everyone and everything in this school has a purpose and a place in the realm of education. The Lamp brings a vision of books and magazines dealing with education to represent the faculty. These books and magazines signify the advances made in education and educational techniques. The Lamp gives us a glimpse into the future of the seniors with pamphlets exemplifying the various means of higher education and of serving our country. For the underclassmen, the Lamp shows us a globe and textbooks representing the wide scope and importance of education—especially for the young. For music, the Lamp shows us an ancient flute. This represents the continuing influence and importance of musical education to the civilized world. The Lamp recognizes the place of sports in education with a display of equipment from the different sports activities. Sports are important in education because they help to build the character of the participants. The Lamp shows us various articles representing the activities in the school. These activities are important because they broaden the students' outlook and give practical experience in future professions. As an introduction to the advertising section, we see a pile of coins. This represents the need of monetary support for the Athenian, the record of the school year. 4 Jn Jitemoriam We, the student body and faculty of Athens High School, would like to pay special tribute to a man who gave many productive and well-remembered years to this school and the students who have passed through it. Mr. Robert Martin, who passed away on April 28, 1966, spent seventeen years teaching in our school system. For a number of years, he was head of the business department. Three years ago he gave this up to take on the jobs of attendance supervisor and administrative assistant to the supervising principal. These are tasks entailing much work, but Mr. Martin handled them well even though he was teaching business law and typing II at the same time. Mr. Martin was not only an excellent teacher, but also a teacher well-liked and admired by both the student body and faculty. 5 'labfe Administration Faculty...........P. 8 Seniors..........:.................P. 28 Underclassmen......................P. 50 Music..............................P. 80 Activities.........................P. 90 Sports ........................... For fourteen years, the district has consisted of Athens Borough, Athens Township, Sheshe-quin Township and Ulster Township. Now, the Smithfield-Ridgebury-Ulster school district has been joined to it. Because of extensive revisions mandated by the state, the board now consists of nine members as opposed to the twenty members of previous years. Seven of these members are from the original Athens Area Joint Board of Education and two are from the S.R.U. Board. The members from Athens are: Dr. J. Clifton Lynch, Dr. Ralph B. Gregory, Robert Fraley, Carl Morris, Harlan J. Rowe, Ray Fenton Murphy, and J. W. Watson. The members from S.R.U. are Laurence R. Kingsley and Elmo A. Owen. Mrs. Celia Arnold, though not a member of the board, is the board secretary and has been so for eighteen years. Her years of service are greatly appreciated. 10 7n Jratitucfe 7or Services J'tenc erecf. ... to our school and to the community, we would like to thank these fourteen men of the former Athens Board of Education who are no longer on the board because of a reorganization of the school system. These men have served many years to the benefit of our school with little recognition or recompense. We would like to dedicate this page as a lasting record of this service. Ralph E. Ammerman Clifford Isbell Richard Bowen Superintendent of Schools JITr. Tticfiarc TKaroin The superintendent of schools is the executive officer of the Board of Education. It is his duty to execute the policies established by the board. He recommends the appointment of faculty members, and prepares the annual school budget. He is responsible for the administration of the schools in the district. He serves as a public relations man, and informs the people of the accomplishments and the needs of Athens Area Schools. His duties are many and strenuous, and Mr. Marvin does an outstanding job. 12 !dminisiraiiue Issisiani Mr. Raker, as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools of the Athens Area School District, has many responsibilities. The supervision of maintenance and school equipment is his responsibility. He purchases all the supplies and textbooks for the district, and sees that the teachers requisitions are filled out properly. The delivery of these supplies is also handled by him. The post of Administrative Assistant is one essential to the efficient running of the school, and during this, his first year, Mr. Raker has done an exceptional job. JJrincipa Mr. Pruyne, as principal of Athens High School, carries most of the responsibility for the general policy of the school. This is Mr. Pruyne’s first year as principal at Athens although he was acting principal in 1963-1964, and served in the capacity of Assistant Principal 1964-1966. As principal, Mr. Pruyne provides leadership for the teachers and students. He has the responsibility for instructional improvement, planning of the curriculum, and student morale and conduct. He works with the superintendent of schools for the public relations program. Mr. Pruyne does an excellent job, of handling his widely varied duties. MRS. GRACEMARY E. ALGER A.B. Elmira College M. Studying languages enables us to understand ourselves and others. The English courses emphasize grammar and literature. Students study specific writing skills and practice their use. They study the techniques of others in learning to clearly express themselves. The study of literature provides an understanding of people. By studying the structure and meaning of literature, students gain an insight into and understanding of themselves as well as of others. The study of foreign languages is the key to world understanding. Two such languages, French and German, are offered in our school. The study of languages is basically a study of the formal grammar and culture of the language. It is hoped that students will acquire a working knowledge of the language and will be able to put it to use if they should ever be in a situation requiring such knowledge. . 14 PETER P. POKEGO B.S. Through the social studies department, young people are taught how to live in and understand the world around them. Every high-school student will be given the privilege to vote in a few years. With this power, he is able to help maintain and shape his government. The part every citizen takes in his government will depend upon the training he has had from the social studies department. Truly we learn from the past and our own and others’ experiences. With the knowledge of the history of the world we are able to regulate the present and plan for the future wisely. 16 Jatecvau Jo 7 ie Jufur The mathematics department of Athens High School has just been revised to meet the requirements of a changing world. Junior high school math prepares students for more advanced study. Seventh and eighth grade math primarily reviews elementary arithmetic and prepares students for higher math. In the freshman year students are first introduced to the entirely new concept of algebra. The fundamentals of algebra are taught in elementary algebra. Athens High School combines plane and solid geometry into a unified course in geometry which any sophomore may choose to take. A combined course in trigonometry and intermediate algebra is offered to juniors. In this unified course, students study trigonometry functions and increase their knowledge of algebra. Advanced mathematics is offered to seniors who have shown capability and interest in math. In this course, students continue their study of algebra for one semester and, during the second semester, start elementary calculus. The study of math aids the students in the development of his reasoning ability and leads him to work carefully. This new system allows the student to acquire a more thorough knowledge of mathematics. EARL K. DILL A.B. University of Michigan Geometry and Trigonometry MRS. MARIAN C. KLINE B.S. A student is required to take a half a year of each in seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. During this time, he is given experience in these fields and is taught something of their history. A student who wishes to, may continue on in either of these fields during senior high. The music department has several clubs. The junior and senior choruses and the junior and senior bands put on several concerts a year. The senior band plays during half-time at football games. There is Glee Club for particularly good singers and Stagehand for enthusiastic musicians. In art class, the students are taught about perspective and shading and the other techniques which make drawings seem realistic. They find an appreciation for what goes into art. The primary purpose in teaching art is to make the students more observant and more aware of their surroundings. 20 PHILIP L. BUTLER B.S. The junior high boys are required to take the shop course designed to acquaint them with hand tools. In senior high the course is optional. If the students choose to go on, they learn to use power tools and to repair automobiles. Technical drawing is the study of mechanical procedure and the element of sketching. The material ranges from elementary drawings to aerographic projections and to forms of pictorial drawings and architectural drawings. In the industrial arts program, the emphasis is on trying to help the boys decide if they wish to continue their technical training. Offered as an elective in senior high is a course in agriculture. The boys in this class spend their freshman and sophomore years studying basic farming. In their last two years they take agribusiness—the study of how farming affects the economy. Included in this field are such topics as marketing, management, and cooperatives. Upon completion of this course the boys have a basic understanding of agriculture and its relationship with other fields. 21 MRS. RUTH B. DANKO B.S. There are two courses which aid in doing this. A course in health is required for all ninth and twelfth grade students. In this course, the students are shown basic first aid and the symptoms, causes, and effects of different diseases. They are taught the basic body structures and how the different organs and systems function. The physical education department increases the fitness of the students' bodies through exercise and various sports. Among the sports taught and played are softball, volleyball, field hockey, football and basketball. This year, in order that swimming might be taught, a pool has been added to the school s facilities. 22 The purpose of the guidance department of Athens High School is principally to aid the student. College-bound students are aided by the wide variety of college catalogs and bulletins and by individual counseling. The counselors put out bulletins concerning scholarships and scholarship tests, help students with scholastic problems, and help students find part-time jobs. This year the department has been enlarged by the addition of two new counselors, Mrs. Jones and Mr. Riker. Miss Lunger is in charge of the seventh and eighth grades, and holds an instruction period with each class each week. Mrs. Jones works with the problems of ninth and tenth graders. Mr. Riker aids the juniors and seniors. Dr. Bresee supervises the department and works with senior high students. (Juicfes Jjast J ie ( t ossroa cfs CLYDE W. BRESEE B.S. Mansfield State College M.Ed. The school nurse provides an education in good health habits and keeps a regularly updated record on each student. One of the most appreciated services in the school is that of the library. It not only provides the reference materials for school work, but also the reading books for those who are interested. The special education department provides an education in basic skills for some students. This course allows some of the students to spend half of the day in school and the other half at a job in the community. The school offers a service to the community as well as to the individual student through drivers' education classes. Gilbert Literary Staff (creates This year the Athenian-Staff has published the 126th edition of the Athenian. The process of compiling a yearbook is a complicated one, requiring much organization, cooperation, and hard work. The staff is divided into groups, each of which works on one particular section, planning and designing layouts of pictures. The entire staff works together in drawing up copy forms, identifying pictures, and writing copy. The typists type all the copy and picture identifications on the copy forms. TYPING: D. Gallup, R. However, there usually is a school photographer who takes some pictures around the school and community for use in the Athenian. The money to publish the Athenian is covered in part by the purchase price, but the rest of the money must be solicited; this is the main function of the Business Staff. This year they have done an admirable job in advertising with posters around the school, soliciting valley merchants and patrons, and conducting the sale of the yearbook in the homerooms. Connie Stone was this year’s chief editor with Mrs. Bresee as the faculty advisor. At the meetings of the whole staff, the editors assign the articles to the reporters. The next step is to type the articles, fitting them into columns. Planning the layout sheets comes next followed by the cutting of the stencils. The sheets are then mimeographed and stapled together to form the final paper. 99 Gfie cS iucfeni (VIn ions; fjr. f) iucfeni Gouncif The purposes of the Junior High Student Council are threefold. Its primary purpose is to teach parliamentary procedure and to give its members practice in using this procedure. It gives junior high students a chance to express their opinions on school policies and problems, and make suggestions for changes or improvements. One of their projects has been the initiation of a dramatics club for junior high students. There is a student representative on the council from each homeroom in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. The purpose of this organization is to teach the girls more about family life and the advantages of helping others. Twenty 9th grade girls are chosen each year, by means of a test, to join the Junior F.H.A. This test is required in order to get a Junior F.H.A. Degree. No test is required to join the Senior F.H.A. Money is raised through dances, bakesales, and dues (part of which go to the state and national branches) in order to finance projects. This year the Junior F.H.A. girls have bought and made toys and books for the valley hospitals. The Senior F.H.A. girls also have had a hospital project and have made favors for the nursing home at Christmas. Both the Junior and Senior F.H.A. girls are joining in the county F.H.A. project of supporting an underprivileged child in North Carolina. Each year the F.H.A. groups take two educational field trips. This year they went to Hershey and Harrisburg. Every June two to four members from each group are chosen to go to the state conference of F.H.A. at Pennsylvania State University where they stay for three days. By the time these girls graduate, they have a well-rounded education in the making of a home. Row I—J. Bresee, S. Gerhis, S. Parks. Row 2—H. Gimberling, W. Waltman. Row 3—C. Watson, D. Davis, K. This club is of benefit to its members in various ways. It has, in past years, purchased sweaters for the senior lettermen, letters for those varsity members who earn them, and jackets for the entire varsity team. This year a trend has been broken by the Touchdown Club. This year blazers have been purchased instead of sweaters. All these benefits are made possible by various fund-raising campaigns and excellent sponsorship. Slncf ffe Row l M. Crouse, W. Firestine, T. Barrett Row II A. Jones, J. Lewis Row III D.
