I s4t£e t s4%ea ‘rtyiyd. School 4t6eH4, 2 'P vieco ul School days arc very important days in the lives of young people. Fach new day offers a challenge to learn something different and to increase one’s knowledge. Sunday is a day of reverence; a day when we stop awhile to rest and to reflect upon the past week. Seniors have reached a resting point in their academic life. School days are almost past, and tomorrow dawns a bright new future. Past school days become a novelty, a sacred step on the path of learning. Monday is a day of instruction. The faculty and administration supervise the learning of students and instruct them in the proper representations of knowledge. Monday is an important day, because it provides the student with a motive to learn. Tuesday is a day of endeavor. Pupils endeavor to gain all the learning possible during their twelve years of school. The learning gained will be a great asset to students in future years. Wednesday is a day of activities; a day when students pursue individual interests, and participate in favorite clubs. Activity periods are a busy time for everyone. Thursday is a day of harmony. Due to the existence of many musical materials and a stable interest from students, many musical activities are offered Both vocal and instrumental music are provided. Thus each individual has the opportunity to pursue his interests. Friday is a day of competition. Members of athletic groups and cheering squads practice daily to improve upon their form and give their school a good representation. Friday, being the last day of the school week, is the day of hardest practice before the competitive event. Saturday is a day of business and recreation. Social events are generally slated for Saturday nights, and in preparing for the big night, students utilize the stores and beauty salons of Athens. Saturday completes the week of school days. School days are busy days, but they are also happy days. Many wonderful things happen during the school year, as well as a few bad things. But all in all, school days are days to be remembered with fondest thoughts. 1. Days of Progress ......................................... 6-37 A. He progresses in height, weight, and stature. Each year a student progresses from one grade to the next until he becomes a senior. The goal of this progression is to achieve a diploma at graduation. Here the student will begin a whole new life, and will progress into a new world—the world of adults. There is no end to progress, only new beginnings. FRIDAY SATURDAY David P. Several times the officers conducted class meetings in the auditorium in order that they might discover what the majority wanted. The prime duty of the officers was suggesting means of increasing the class treasury. This year they offered not only bake sales, dances, and car washes, but also the unique idea of a Senior Christmas Hop. With the approval of the entire class, the dance was held successfully on December 18. All activities were hindered somewhat, however, by the absence of a very important person in the seniors’ lives—their class president. Denny Leavenworth, who was elected last spring, was absent the whole year due to serious illness. One last element of concern in the class of 1965 was the departure of Mary Potter, its exchange student from Australia. Mary left in January after a happy year at Athens High and an altogether successful stay in the United States. With her went the class's wishes for many wonderful years in her future. A student works six years to gain the privilege of donning a cap and a gown in order that he may walk down the aisle to receive a diploma. This diploma is essential to a student's future life. Without a high school diploma, it is impossible for a young man or woman to get a good paying job where he or she may expect to be promoted. Most business firms will not even consider hiring an individual who cannot present a diploma of graduation. Therefore, most high school students work diligently to obtain this diploma. SUNDAY TUrSDAY ESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY School days are Days of Supervision. The Board of Education formulates the policies of Athens High School and supervises the spending of money for school activities. Our principal, Mr. Finley supervises the behavior of students. Staff members of the faculty supervise the learning of pupils in Athens High School, and the office secretaries supervise the organization of the main office. Just as important are the custodians and the cafeteria staff who kfeep the school clean and feed nearly one thousand mouths a day. Without supervision, there would be no Athens High School. Therefore, school days must be Days of Supervision. 39 The Board of Education is the executive body of the Athens school system and is composed of twenty members, five from each of the four districts in the jointure. A teacher in need of a student may spend 5 seconds in the office talking with one of the secretaries, looking through the files, and immediately know where to find that student. A student wanting to know how much money a certain club has in its treasury can find out quickly by going to the office. They have these same assignments all year long. During the summer, they wash all the lockers inside and out getting them ready for the next year. Beside? keeping the inside of the school clean, they also keep the grass mowed and the hedges trimmed. This Federal Pattern, as it is called, states the minimum of the basic foods which each plate must contain. To help in planning nourishing meals a recipe file is included with the pattern. Each school day is a life in itself in which each student endeavors to reach an ultimate goal—achievement. Every underclassman endeavors to achieve many goals: making the honor roll, completing a book report, making a new friend, and finally, becoming a senior. Endeavor covers every aspect of a student’s life. It is the very basis upon which education is founded. Without endeavor, there can be no achievement. Thus, we may truthfully say that each school day is a Day of Endeavor. 53 BOTTOM ROW (L to R)—D. Mclntire, G. Miller, R. Bortle, D. Rae, M. Shadduck, L. Henley, R. Beeman, A. Alpaugh 2ND ROW— D. A student is given privilege of pursuing whatever field interests him the most. An individual interested in Drama finds several dramatic groups to choose from. Each group offers an insight to a different aspect of stage w'ork. Journalistic students find several scopes to be explored, and the scholastical personage has many opportunities to pursue his interests. Athens High School offers activities for the athletes, artists, actors, writers, honor students, musicians, students who plan to enter a specific field of study, and for those w’ho are just looking for a good time. These students helped with the previous edition during their junior year. They attended a yearbook seminar in Wilkes-Barre in May, 1964, to increase their knowledge of producing a good yearbook. The yearbook did not have an editor, but all members worked co-operatively after school on Wednesdays and during activity period Fridays with their advisor, Mrs. Alger. This is the 124th edition of the ATHENIAN, a far cry from the first newspapers and magazines to be put out by the ATHENS ACADEMY. In fact, it is the oldest known name in publications in Pennsylvania. This and the fact that the yearbook has won many awards are events which every ATHENS student should be proud of. It is the hope of the class of 1965 that this yearbook upholds tradition. The Teaogan, our school newspaper, published this year with great success. Its capable staff was headed by co-editors, Mark Northrup and Kenneth Gregory. Mrs. Bresee, the junior English teacher, was the faculty advisor. Mrs. Bresee has contributed many new suggestions and ideas to improve our paper. The staff met once a week. At these meetings assignments were given and ideas for new editions and improvements from the last issue were discussed. The reporters found scoop stories in the many activities and phases of school life. Each paper contained a sports section, feature stories, and articles on functions of clubs in the school. It also contained themes, short stories, and poetry written by any student. A new addition to the paper this year was its junior high section. This was devoted entirely to seventh, eighth, and ninth grade happenings. The staff has worked hard and diligently to issue a good paper. Much praise should be given to them for their fine success. t07e oytU€ KNEELING (l-r)—D Allen, S. Keiss, J. Littleton. D Lewis, P Shay, J Kulziki, P. Mallu, L. Corl, M Kandclin. Students practice a great deal during the school year in order to provide the Valley with satisfactory musical performances, and also to increase their own musical ability. 97 Setiox For two weeks in August the early evening stillness is broken by the sound of the Athens High School Band practicing drill maneuvers on the high school parking lot. The band is already preparing for the long season ahead. Since the rivalry between bands is almost as great as the rivalry between football squads, the band works very hard to be in the top form for the football games. The band performs an entertaining half-time show regardless of weather. This year the band attended the Cornell University Band Day along with some sixty other high school bands from Northern Pennsylvania and Southern New York. After football season the band moves indoors to begin work for the concert season. The music department presents two concerts annually for the enjoyment of the public. Oboe S. The Majorettes practiced diligently throughout the fall preparing these routines, which were well received by their audiences. KNEELING (1-r)—B. Gordon, L. Nye, R. Loomis, M. Zagozewski. S. Loomis. These teams offer the boys a chance to release pent-up energy and to build up their physical strength. Good sportsmanship is stressed during the practice meets and the actual game. As a result, new friends are made and the boys learn to handle responsibilities. The Cheerleaders also play an important role in competitive sports. They keep school spirit alive, and act as examples of good sportsmanship during pressing moments. The cheerleaders keep the teams in good spirits and cheer them on to victory whenever possible. Athens High School is very proud of its athletic program, and the students involved in it. 109 1st ROW (1-r)—J. Kunkel, B. Carlin, J. Keegan, D. Wilcox, B. Tetrault, P. Falsey, A. Campbell, G.
