These buildings were put in service when school opened in 1965. The new swimh ming pool, opened in August 1965, was the result of cooperation between the community, the county and the students, with Mr. Smith leading the way. We point with pride to these buildings. But far more important is the contri- bution which Mr. Smith has made to our lives . In his address to the student body at the opening of school, Mr. Smith has affirmed many times his faith in us as self respecting, responsible individ- uals. We have tried to live up to that faith. Sometimes we have fallen short, but he has encouraged us by word and by example to do better next time. He has contributed greatly to our sense of selferespect and pride in ourselves and our community. These are the values Mr. George Smith came to Atascadero we Will carry With us. In the truest Union High School as District Superin- sense Mr. Smith has been our friend, tendent and principal in 1955 . At that a man whorn we have been ptoud to time the student body numbered around call our. principal and. superintendent. 300. Steadily increasing enrollment And so it is With gratitude and affection demanded expansion. Under Mr. Smith's that we dedicate the 1966 Santa Lucia to direction the administration building an educator who has touched our lives was rehabilitated in 1959. In 1961 a new SO deeply. boys dorm on Santa Lucia was opened. Mr. George B. Smith TABLE OF CONTENTS . . . Winter pg. 36 . . .Summer pg. 116 m; 7 .. , FALL. .. ADMIN ISTRATION With enrollment hovering around the 725 mark, the administration Chiefs never find themselves idle. Just scheduling Classes so that everyone or nearly everyone, can take the courses he wants is a major operation. As the school expands there's the problem of finding room for all the students. Every teacher clamors for moretequipment. More buses are needed. Students have problems. Decisions must be made. An observer wonders how a bustling school can possibly be kept running so smoothly. The answer lies with these talented people Who make up the administration. MR. GEORGE E. SMITH, Principal MRS. TIGHE Dean of Girls MR. R. H. EWING MR. E. W. H; i Dear F riends; It's with sadness that I see my year as an AFS Student come to an end and before I say goodbye to you all, Iwant to GX' press my thanks to you. Thank you so much for the help you have given me this past year, and thank you for the co-oper- ation you give to the A. F .8. program. Thank you so much for sharing with me a home, and a school, and for giving me your love, understanding and friendship. Thank you especially for offering me AUHS Where I learned so many things about you and the United States, and were I met the nicest people I have ever known. Thank you for your interest in learning about Brazil, and for trying to help me establish a better understanding between our countries. I'll never forget this wonderful year I spent With you. Under the aegis of this capable state of officers the Class was off for the 4 year run. Action is the word for the Junior class. Cookie sales, a car wash, dances, bake sales in downtown Atascadero and at the Templeton sales yard taxed the energy and ingenuity of these busy people . With the money raised the Juniors honored the Seniors with the prom, held this year for the first time at the Paso Robles Country Club. A buf- fet supper highlighted the gala evening. Serving as honor guard and decorating for commence- ment exercises completed the year. 1: 2t33sef'fw D ale S andra Anderson Anderson Virginia Jesse Pamela Arnold Jim Susan Donna Baum Benningfield Bertoldo 52 Kathryn Bob Bab cock Willy Gene Carson Bickar Bilyeu Blanton t : Susan Linda Janis Larry John Jane Borba Borjes Brant Brilliante Buckman Burleson Mikellee Charles Judy Alan R ay mond Busak Cames Canington C arroll Ch ang Randy Linda Beverly David Brad Arnold Clark Clinton Coleman Copelan Cronkri ght Cross JoNeil Morrison Pat Robert Richard Virginia June Lee Deputy Dillon Dolling Duncan Durnbaugh Daniels 53 Ginny Arnold, Judy Knutson, and Jane Burleson work hard in biology. Yet a newspaper has emerged every other Wednes- day, to the astonishment of bewildered editors and to the complete amazement of the advisor, Mrs. Howe. In order to finance the expanded, completely printed paper this year, an advere tising service was established. The entire ad project, has been carried out by the students. The Quill and Scroll took in a record number of new members this yeareseven students in their second year of journalism and serving in a responsible capacity; and the staff boasted a record number of boys-eight. Santa lucid DEADLINE DILEMMA Once again the Santa Lucia Staff'sits back in amaze- ment and relief as they put 30 to this years efforts. Pictures have been taken, developed and printed. Layouts are com- pleted. Copy has been written, re-written and typed. The advertising section is filled. Senior records have been come piled, and more than 550 I.D. pictures have been identified. Working with the long black shadow of deadline days hovere ing over them, the staff has learned versatility, and demon- strated unsuspected talents, and the darkroom has become a familiar place. Tousseau 1920e1966 ADVISOR, FRIEND TEACHER, COACH Mr. George E. Tousseau came to Atascadero High School in 1956. Serving in many capacities, he played an important part in the life of the school. His United States History classes were a focal point in our Junior year. In his Classrooms many of the great moments in the history of our country came vividly to life for us. Mr. Tousseau joined Mr. Sachs in coaching the Junior Varsity football team in the fall of 1962, throwing himself into the task with typical enthusiasm. As Class ad- visor, he spent many hours helping with Junior class activities. His friendliness and warm-hearted interest never failed to spark the activities of which the Junior- Senior Prom was the highlight. Mr. Tousseau's many enthusiasms, quick wit, and lively sense of fun will be sorely missed by the faculty and student body of Atascadero High School. 7M I, ' X . Representatives are encour- aged to voice the opinions of their home- room Classes in Student Council meetings. On the agenda for this year to be com- pleted was a school sign. The sign designed by an AUHS Senior, Ron Tucker, is to be placed on the hill in front of the school. Much of the work in Student Council was done in committees. Each representative was assigned to a committee, which proved valuable in getting action instead of talk on various projects including banners for the gym, and a new ineligibility system which was also worked on by members of the faculty.
