BUYS SPORTS BY RALPH KUNKEE At the beglnnmg of the year the chances for boys sports of any kind looked very slim First of all, there could be no interscholastic games because of tire and gas ratlonmg Second all athletic equlpment was very scare However, Coach Ewlng reassured us by telling us that the athletic equipment he had, although somewhat lim ited was in fairly good shape Also we wouldn t have to worry about games H w as going to schedule intramural games ln all sports '1 his would give us more games and give more fellows a chance to play than in other years With this in mmd we opened up the sports year with football practice It took us quite a while to get over our clumsmess Our first practices looked very bad but it wasn t long before the teams were in pretty good shape 'Iwo te lms w ere chosen in each of the fifth and sixth periods Because of the manpower shortage six man foot ball was plaved The games were scheduled on Thursday afternoons School was let out early, and once or twice the band was out fhxs gave the games a footballlc at mosphere 'I he games were run in a round robin, each team playing every other team 'led Waddell s team of the sixth period was winner of the round robin, but Garcia s w as a very very close second After this was run off, each period chose one team from the group composed of the best players These were known as The All Stars The captain of fifth period s team was B111 Searle Sixth period s captain was Roy Garcia A set of two out of three games were played between these two teams Searle s took the first game, but Garclas won the last two Thrs made sixth period the all around winner as far as football was concerned According to an agreement made before evening at the cafeteria It was a turkey dmner with all the trimmings After the dmner football movies were shown Also, Garcia w as voted as the best all around football player of the year YVe played some interscholastic football after all Two games were played with Templeton We Won both of these games After football we went to basketball There were two basketball leagues, the Pony Le Que, composed mostly of Cs, and the Do nut League composed mostly of A s and B s There were one or more teams in each perlod These games were also run as round robms Two sets in each league were run The Reds fPatterson sl and the Skunlts QGoulds were the eventual wmnexs In basketball also we were able to plav some rnterscholastxc games We played Templeton and San Luis Obispo one game each, losing both of them However, the only practice together the school team had w as one mght a week when we played the town team After basketball we had a few weeks of boxing We came out of that with only the bloody noses of Earl Adams and Orville Brazzl, and the knocked out tooth of Bob Rhodes Then we Jumped into something less harmful but just as strenuous badminton Partners were chosen and games run in each period Champions were picked ln each group but as vet the school championship hasn t been run off M1XCd in wlth had mmton was some tumbling rolls flips head stands, etc VVC then went back outside to the fresh air, sunshine and baseball Flrst we had a few weeks practice We played the baseball games during activity period and noon ohn Proud s team was victorious They defeated Rupert Toledo s team, Le Roy Dodge s, and Donald Ayres In the meantime we started track practice We had about a month of th1s, then on May 4th, we had the intramural track meet School was let out in the afternoon Records for the 50 yard dash, pole vault, and broad Jump were broken that afternoon B111 Wharff was high polnt man for the Cs Bill Kelley for the B s, and Jim Cor nellus for the A s Sixth period received the highest total of pomts An interscholastic track meet was held with San Luis Obispo on the 12th of May We managed to make a total of 126 pomts to their 123 John Webber made a new record in the pole vault for Atascadero by going 9 9 At the time this goes to press there about three weeks of sports left After track, we will have a few Weeks of swimming and this will wind up the sports for 1943 44 In sp1te of the obstacles we can all agree that this was one of the best years of sports A U H S. had ever seen 9 . . , . , , a , B l ' . . . y Y Y , , , , . . e .
