ASPEN HIGH SCHOOL Human Some choose the hard way, and some choose the easy way. Some go right, and some go left. No two people make the same decision, Individuality is what makes us human. Do or don’t. Will or won’t. Morals govern all our choices. That’s what makes us human. Weigh the options, Make a choice. That’s what makes us human. Weigh the options, Make a choice. That’s what makes us human. Will Bailey There Is A Road There is a road A long passageway in which we all travel but there are many other crossroads every road is chosen and many roads are taken. We may follow the road to our career, our future or we may follow a road toward drugs, prison or death but when we come to those crossroads we will know which path to follow we will know by what we’ve learned and by what we feel. I arrived in Aspen in August with the Fulbright Exchange My hometown is Bnston. England. I have a husband named Richard. Since my hometown is on the Welsh border, they speak a different language. I enjoy tennis, field hockey, swimming, and other various sports. I also like to listen to music and read books in my spare time. The best thing about America is the existence of a genuine summer In England it rains every day. The worst thing is the American tea I am returning in September of 1988 ANA RUIZ GELI I am 18 years old I am a Senior. I arrived in Aspen with the Rotary Exchange students on August nineteenth My parents are Enrique Ruiz L6pez and Maria Angeles Geli Giro. There are many differences between the U S A and Spam The major difference is the drinking age In Spain you have to be 18 years old to drive. The people are very different. In Spam a person almost always lives in their hometown for life. There are not many divorces. I like the school here and I think it is easier here than in Spain. In my free time I like to shot put. go to discos, run cross country, ride bikes and garden I had three years of English before I came. In the future I want to be an English teacher. The best things about America are the people and snow skiing and the worst things are that I can't go to bars and discos Internationals XELO CARMONA TORRO I am 19 years old My hometown is L’Alcudia near Valencia. Spam This is my Senior year in the U S A but I have already graduated in Spain I arrived in Aspen on August nineteenth, as a Rotary Exchange student. I was very interested m learning English and the customs of the people I would like to attend an American College so it is important to me to learn as much as possible My father’s name is Jos6 Carmona Alvarez. He is an architect and my mother is a housewife. Her name is Mercedes Torr6 Cuc6. I have no brothers or sisters. It will be difficult for me to express my impressions of this country The food, the people, the houses, the high school, everything I have encountered has been different. I enjoy discovering the differences. I enjoy cross-country running, reading books, listening to music, bicycling and aerobics. I am very excited to learn how to ski. because I have never seen snow. When I first came to Aspen I could not understand what the teachers or other students were saying. By graduation I hope I will understand everything. FRANCOISE REMY I am 19 years old. I am a Senior. I arrived in Aspen on the 23rd of August as a Rotary Exchange student. My hometown is Lucon in France My parents are Joseph-Marie and Francoise. I also have a brother named Xavier and a dog named Ulysse. When I got here I was surprised because everything was so different. Aspen and France are not comparable. The way of life and the attitude of the people is much different. I like basketball, dancing, and reading. My favorite thing about America is the school. My least favorite thing is a McDonald’s hamburger. I am returning to France in June. 13 14 t y 17 The faculty at Aspen High School introduce a variety of cultural elements to enhance the curriculum. In a questionnaire distributed by the yearbook committee, an overwhelming majority of the faculty have traveled to various foreign and intercontinental lands. Some exotic destinations include Vietnam, Russia, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan, but the popular ones were Europe, Mexico, and Canada. Infallibly, the teachers have learned much from these experiences abroad and have brought their cosmopolitan knowledge to us. This is of significant importance to us for it gives us a finer understanding of people and cultures. Furthermore, it produces a well rounded personality and an interesting character. This knowledge is beneficial in our pursuit of higher education and in every day life. 20 Nell Goldberg Kirk Gregory Susan Hill Ken Larson Bonnie Lopez Jennifer Owsley KM iT r. LARRY PARSONS PRINCIPAL ASPEN HIGH Mr. Larry Parsons has had a variety of teaching exper- iences prior to his position as principal at Aspen High School. He taught English for five years in Oregon, along with coaching basketball and baseball. Mr. Parsons has attained a high level of education. He has a Bachelors and a Masters degree and has completed an administrative program equivalent to a Ph D. During his rare flashes of free time, Mr. Parsons enjoys most recreational sports such as hiking, biking, skiing and tennis. He also has a black belt in karate and has exper- ience in teaching karate as well. Mr. Parsons had different plans for his life when he was a kid. He dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player and after hundreds of pitches, practices and sea- sons, he was offered a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. He declined the contract because he felt his priori- ties were with his education and young family. Parsons has no definite plans for his future but remarks, “I don't think that far ahead, but I am content with my present job. I’m sure my life will continue to be dedicated to education. Many accomplishments have been attributed to Mr Parsons. Aspen High School has become a school of excellence because of new mandatory attendance regula- tions, athletic academic criteria, completely computerized front office and the restructuring of experiential education. Aspen High School has indeed gained much from the service of this dedicated man. O 0)03 C — N CO ' — O C ( ) McFarlm. Xelo Carmona. Julia Johnson. Kathy Zachanas-Parsons. Cast LaPaho. Mendith Meskin. The expression captures the essence of the 1987-1988 football Skiers. Under first Year Coach George Giannini, the Skiers rolled to a 7-2 season and third in the league. This was the first winning effort since 1983. The Skiers, a force to be reckoned with in the Northwest League, spent much of the year ranked in the Class 2-A polls of both the Rocky Mountain News and Newscenter 4. The offense was enginenered by Junior quarterback Terry Smith, who passed for 1,126 total yards. Joe Carlson took the honors for the most rushing yards with 1,202, 100 yards shy of a school record. Nate Hanson, who excited the crowd with his spectacular play as wide receiver, was credited with 637 yards in receptions. Greg Mears. Derk Torinus and Josh Goldman also contributed with favorable offensive statistics. Brian Charity, Jeremie Oates. Bobby Williams. Tad Osborn, and Chris Durham showed impressive abilities as the offensive and defensive lineman in blocking, tack- les. and sacks. With an outstanding group of Juniors and underclassmen, the outlook for the next season is definitely favorable. Volleyball 87 1987 Northwest League Co-Champs Volleyball 1987 This year’s Aspen High School girls’ volleyball team dominated their Northwest League opponents by winning a second consecutive league crown The skiers displayed large amounts of hustle and sheer tenacity throughout the season and finished with an outstanding record of 11 and 7. First year head coach Leon Fell, who had replaced Bonnie Maddalone for the year, guided the team through the competitive season The skiers started the season off slowly, but came back at the end with a winning streak of seven games. Senior Ashley Dodge and junior Shelby Hill were named to the Northwestern League first team. Senior Bonnie Helm and junior Michelle Meeker were awarded positions on the league’s second team Anne Carlson. Emily DeYoung. Kirsten Stuart, and Karin Stoeckl assisted the team with their excellent talent and future hope. Dodge and Helm were later named to compete in all-star games in Boulder and Fort Collins. The Skiers, thanks to their winning season, continued to be a major volleyball team in Colorado for the Class 2A division Soccer 1987 Only under its second year as an official sport at Aspen High, soccer in 1987 has undergone a learning process. Although the Skier soccer players went winless this year, a lot of positive effort and determination were exhibited. Second year coach Andrew Popinchalk was the inspiration and moti- vation of this year's team. Coach Popinchalk credited players Abel Liston, Mike MacKenzie, goalie Shane Coolidge, Garrett Fisher, and Hernial Kafle for their out pouring of hustle and aggressiveness. Seniors Troy Hojel and Nikos Hecht contri- buted late in the season with their high degree of intensity and their will to attain victory. Mark one up for Women's Lib. The girls' team qualified for the state meet in Pueblo by placing second in the League Championship at Rifle Even though the girls did not fare well at state, they proved to be a dominating force in the Colorado Class 2A competition The state team included returning seniors Natalie Ward. The boys’ basketball program indeed is on an upward climb in competi- tiveness and respectability in the Northwest League and the state. Coach Gregory also said. This team had good athletic ability and possesses a competitive drive The varsity team consisted of players including seniors Joe Carlson. Nate Hanson, and Bo Helmich who accumulated records on the court Players Terry Smith. Brian Chanty. Rich Sauer, and Todd Hickman provided the team with speed and high shooting percentages Other seniors such as Morgan Fields. The girls’ varsity team underwent a learn- ing process of sorts this year in the face of fierce Northwest League competition. Al- though the girls’ team did not have much suc- cess. they were significant in showing large amounts of poise and fortitude. This year’s team only had two seniors Ash- ley Dodge and Shonna Stonehocker. Thus the team will be more experienced next season with veterans Anne Carlson. Shelby Hill. Kir- sten Stuart, and Michelle Meeker. The future for the girls team looks positive under the coaching expertise of Dave Conarroe and the continued devotion on the girls’ part. Wyoming, with college level racers. The team also attended the Utah Winter Games with girls and boys victorious. The team's goal this year is to make it all the way to the Junior Olympics in Lake Placid. New York, with some members certain to attend. The team has been suc- cessful in mastering the categories of skiing such as three diagonal, classical, and skating into an art form. Although considered a small sport, at Aspen High, the team did their part in maintaining the de- gree of excellence and respectability in the Aspen High sports program. The 1987 Aspen High School Cheerleaders exhibited a lot of spirit and goodwill throughout the community and the school. A great amount of hard work and effort was put out by the cheerleaders in support of the Skier teams. The cheer- leaders were responsible for the Homecoming Week and numerous pep rallies held in 1987-88. The cheerleaders also held camps for the younger middle school students aspiring to become future cheerleaders at the high school. The four seniors of the team, Susan Scheer, Jenny Weissman, Christi- na Schloffer, and Shonna Stonehocker organized a Junior Varsity squad in an effort to strengthen the skills of young cheerleaders. The girls were an inspiration to us and enriched the school with spirit. The girls should be credited for their hard work and desire to make our school the most spirited in the Northwest League. “Spirit, We Take It High All The Way With A-H-S!” so JV Cheerleaders: Bottom row. left to right: Trevi Burkholder, Amy Mitchell.
