Production of the one-act plays was headed by Heidi Roupp and assistant producer, student Maria Nazzaro. The remainder of the sea- son is expected to flourish as strongly as these four plays did! “Living people, humans, occupied with their petty occupations and small thoughts, know little of true joy or happiness .... Even the “I love you all, everything!” is realization and discovery as much as it is poignancy.” T.W. “This play is called OUR TOWN. It was written by Thornton Wilder and produced by the Aspen High School Thespian Society. In it you will see Amy Erickson, Edmond Shapiro, Jeff Edmonds, Bill Coleman, Karen Blomquist, Sandy Wilkinson, and many others too numerous to mention. “OUR TOWN. ” was directed by Bill Shore. The absence of scenery allowed the audience to use their imaginations. Attentive ears, as well as eyes, were needed to catch the message that was portrayed. 28 Thespians Did you ever think it is as difficult to be- come a Thespian as it is to become a good athlete? As a national organization, The Thespian Society sets a high stan- dard for its members. As of this year, there are thirty-three students who have worked hard enough to receive the need- ed points. Some students are still working hard to earn two points, while others still need all ten points. The soon-to-be Thes- pians gather credit by involving them- selves in the various plays and drama- oriented events. The whole student body is encouraged to get involved . THESPIANS; Lett to right, J. There are approximately ten catagories from which to choose; some examples of these are: dra- matic interpretation, solo acting, ex- temporaneous speaking, original oratory, and Lincoln-Douglas de- bate. The students work on one speech for the full year, but usually end-up working on more. It’s a time consuming activity, but the students are quite willing to put in the hard work. The 1979 Aspen High School football team dedicated its season to Dan VanDomelen, a former team member who was killed over the summer in a climbing accident. The season began with the largest number of players in four years. However, over half of the recruits had never touched a football before. Therefore the team was faced with a large training task. The season seemed shaky for the Skiers who lost their first four league games. But the team came back and ended the season with three strong wins. The Skiers finished with a four and four record, quite an accomplishment for the inexperienced squad. Voted all-league this year was Robert Thuillier, with Kevin Con- nor, Lance Clark, Jim Gile, Steve Fitzgerald, and Jimmy Hall receiving honorable mention. Goal Getters! Captains: K. Connor. R. The Aspen Skier Volleyball Team experienced one of the best seasons in Skier history. The Skier s Varsity had a 15-3 record, and the Junior Varsity team had a 14-1 record. The Skier team finished first place in the league tied with the Battle Mountain Huskeys and the Eagle Valley Devils. The Skier team was blessed, through hard work and desire, with outstanding ath- letic ability shown through 13 strong varsity players. This reason is why the Skiers were rated 2 in the state of Colorado. Talent was extremely well bal- anced at the net for attacking and blocking at oppo- sition. Height was the Skiers 1 asset with 8 players 5’8 to 6'0”. The defensive players, setters, and spikers together, made the Skier season successful. This was only possible through team effort, pride, and ability. “Unity” was the key to the Aspen Volley- ball Team in 1979. X-Country 43 X-Country Team: A. Pausback. A. Richardson. D. Strong. J. The cross country teams took as their goal becoming a strong running force in the Northwestern league. They met this goal with a small, but hard working and determined team. The boys finished third in a close league contest. The girl's team also provided many anxious moments fin- ishing just one point behind first place Steamboat at the league meet. Both teams also did well in state competi- tion. with the boys placing 19th out of 30 teams and the girls, 6th out of 10. Top finishers for Aspen in the league meet were Andre Wille, placing 3rd; Pete Chilson. 7th; Annie Richardson, 3rd; Anne Pausback. 4th; and Marti Pausback, 5th. Many of the play- ers did perform well despite their poor record. However, looking ahead to next year’s team, we ex- pect the current juniors to have developed their po- tential so that their 1981 season will be greatly im- proved. 48 Basketball Togetherness Junior Varsity: J. League Record Battle Mountain Won Roaring Fork Won Meeker Won Rifle Lost Glenwood Springs Won Eagle Valley Won Steamboat Springs Won Rangely Won Winning Women! The 1980 Girls' Basketball team went through the season like a roller coaster. Three early season non-league games dropped As- pen from the state rankings. However, thanks to aggressive de- fense, a total team effort, and the best fast break in Western Colorado, the girls began to establish themselves as the league leaders they had been picked to be early in the season. However, a tough loss to Rifle forced a two-way tie for the league champion- ship going into the league tournament. Coach Conarroe concentrated his efforts on developing and utiliz- ing the talents of the twelve varsity players to mold them into a championship team, while participation and learning was empha- sized at the junior varsity and freshmen levels by coaches Kelly Kelley and Shannon Stapleton. All three teams had successful seasons with the varsity looking toward the state tournament at the end of their league season. 50 Soccer The Soccer Team had a tremen- dous season this year, winning 16 games, losing 4, and tying 2. Aspen led its opponents by 2.3 goals per game, and ended the season with a total of 70 goals to its opponents' 39. The team was headed by Cap- tain Richard Pearce. Outstanding players were Drew Dolin, leading scorer, and fullbacks, Jeff Ste- vens and John Skajen. Kick It!!! SOCCER TEAM: M. Denton. B. Madsen, F. Mallet. I. Skajem, M. Thurman. C. Farr. E. The hockey team this year was com- posed of a hard working and dedicated group of players. They faced a grueling schedule, playing all their away games in the Denver area, competing against Ar- vada. Highland Hills, Colorado Ice Arena, Littleton, University of Denver, and Colo- rado Springs. They also traveled as far as Salt Lake City to take third in a tourna- ment there. The team battled for second place in their league. Although usually considered a strong contender for the state title, the team was ruled ineligible because of the new fifteen-sixteen age limits. The team was coached by Pete Whitmore, Dick Kelley, and Heiko Kuhn and led by captain, Steve Fitzgerald. 52 Downhill Skiing Speed! v ♦ «• The downhill ski team starts its season early with dry-land training in the fall and ends in May with the close of the moun- tains. The racers, divided into A-G classi- fications, take part in about ten competi- tions; downhill, slalom, and giant slalom. They are coached by Jamie Nolton, Ben Hall, Phil Volkhauser, and Steve Murphy. Top high school racers are Tim Madsen, Svein Nostdahl, and Beth Madsen, who is a member of the United States Ski Team. The Nordic Ski Team began its training this year weeks before the first snow fell with a vigorous running schedule which included sprints and endurance workouts to prepare for the five to ten kilometer races in the winter. The whole team looked good this year in their competitions with other schools around the state, both in speed and technique. Coach Raoul Wille, a former member of the United States Nordic Ski Team, also had hopes to send at least three of the team members to the Junior Nationals Competition, including Andre Wille, a two-year veteran of the Junior Nationals. 56 Administration Administration 57 Top: Richard Lee.
