Mr. Bohrson has been with the Aspen School system for some C45 years and holds a Master's Degree from Colorado State Col- lege. We could go on and on emphasizing and expounding upon his strong points, but we all know Mr. Bohrson as a nice guy who constantly has a smile and a good word for everyone: a man everyone feels free to go to in time of trouble, and just an outstanding fellow all the way around. This is somewhat the feeling I have as I write this message in April, 1957, whenl realize that it will not reach your eyes until Fall. The Fall of the year means different things to dif- ferent people around the globe. The Eskimo, for ex- ample, has quite a different impression of Fall than one living on the island of Tahiti. But around Aspen many of us are reminded of falling Aspen leaves, school bells tolling out a beckon to return to school after a summer of vacation fun, the coming of snow, skiing, skating, hunting, football, and other pleasures. But the school year brings with it more than thoughts of fun. It carries, too, a reminder of the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead. A challenge to learn, to grow, to prepare, and to grasp opportunities when they are presented. My personal wish for you this school year would be that you will avail yourself of every opportunity for growth and self-improvement which may come your way, and that this school year will be educationally profitable as well as enjoyable. We, the seniors, of Aspen High School being of sound mind Qnaturallyj and unsound tardy record do hereby declare this document our last will and testament. Article I. We leave to the much harassed faculty all our self-control and sweet dispositions, with the hope that our school will be just as enjoyable next year, without us, asit was this year with us. Article II. We most respectfully will to the Jnmiors our ability to get away with nothing. Article III. To the sophomores we leave nothing Qthey already have enoughj. Article IV. To the freshmen we leave our books and hero medals with the sincere hope that they will pull through. Besides these very worthy bequests the seniors have very generously willed the following. I, George Preston, will my divine personality Qmy money and carj to Dick Blarming. Sylvia Sardy leaves her ability to pass mechanical drawing without plates to Dan Maddlone and her slender figure to Jackie Hoaglund. Jeff Kell wills his ability to get along with Mr. Lewis to Gordon Scheig. Bob Cross gives his ability to borrow anything from anyone to Bob Waterman. Monte Ward wills his ability to not miss Sunday school to Livingston. Chuck Ferries wills his way to get through school without going to M. J. Elisha. Sonnie Maddalone wants to keep Karen, but he will give Keith his ability to succeed with valley girls. Buck Deane leaves to John Passow his ability to elude all of his beautiful feminine admirers. Jane Moore leaves her flirting ways to Chris Hose and her extra pair of long johns to Leroy Briggs. Marion Ilgen leaves his ability to bark at Mr. Gerzina to Bert Anderson. Judy Ringle leaves her short hair to Joanne Cowling. Tad Harrington leaves a bag of vigaro to Keith Patterson. To Susan Fisher, Hallie Barbee leaves her dissertation, on truancyfin case of immediate need check superintendents filej. Penny Hawkins leaves her ability to ditch school and write her own excuses to Fleeta and Billee Lou. Since June Vaughn already has M. J. , the seniors thought that she didn't need anything else, so they left her lots of good luck. Sylvia Sardy leaves her. rights to the pony tail to Cathy Geier. EPICURE SENIOR CLASS WILL CONT . This will signed, sealed, published, and declared our last will and testa- ment ofthe class of 1957, in the absence of us, at their request and in the presence of them and each other, have subscribed our names hereto as witnesses on this day, the day of Thursday, of the month of May, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty-seven. Sealed, the seniors. fDue to circumstances beyond our control, these circumstances being the seniors got all carried away with themselves, we were forced to continue on this pagej ID As we, the Junior class of 1956 -57, gaze into our crystal ball fplatinum plated,of coursej we see our illustrious seniors of 56-57 in the year '95 as they make their way through the glimmering and vast world. First we see Sylvia Sardy as editor of TRUE CONFESSIONS. Jeff Kell seems to be engaged in explaining Einstein's theory of relativity to Mr. Lewis. Jesse Maddalone is busy selling beer in order to pay off the mortgage on Jesse 's Jumping Beer Bottles Bar. Judith Ringle is busily occupied in Carnegie Hall turning pages for Liberace. Buck Deane is in the profession of sheep herding in the Majavi Desert. Bob Cross is swinging on the vines playing Tarzan in the movies. Hallie Barbee is selling tickets at the local Merry-Go-Round. Marion Ilgen is styling Renate Braun's hair. He is now a first-class French hair- stylist. Tad Harrington is taking a pack-train of cows up Mt. Everest. Chuck Ferries as the idolized Elvis Presley! We next see George Preston trooping down the halls of Aspen High School with his broom. He is successor to Mr. Garrish. Jane Moore is still racing junior at Aspen. We see Penny making nickels. We see Monte as president of his namesake company. QWe mean Del Monte, of course.J GRANT AND GORDIER PLUMBING AND HEATING WY 1 1 x 14 'Ql M , 1 1 ' '. A ,Q X f, V ' K X wp I A I it 1 E i I b . STAPLETON AGlENCY At least, the Aspen Student Council of 1956-57 had members having a wide variety of backgrounds, personalities, and talent. fObviously, some of the student body didn't think they hadmuch else.l For example, two of the members had previously lived in Texas. These two members had many brilliant ideas, such as being awarded with gold pins for being on the student council. However, each of. their ideas had a standard and impressive introduction: Well, our student council back in Texas---. During 1956 -57, the student council met weekly. While these meetings were in session, many issues of earth shaking importance were discussed. One of the more im- portant issues in question was whether the title to the constitution should be The Con- stitution of the Aspen High School Student Council, or just, The Constitution of the Aspen Student Council. To get to the point, the question is, What did the student council actually ac- complish? They did the following things: They sponsored a series of National As- semblies which were put on for the student body once a month. They sponsored a Christmas and a musical assembly. They set up a game room to provide constructive activities for students during the lunch period. They sponsored homecoming and the Christmas Prom. The school's participation in Winterskol was co -ordinated by them. They also put the finishing touches on a constitution which was approved by the student body. Although the student body is a nonprofit organization, they found themselves in debt, and so they sponsored a bake sale and a movie, which was shown to the stu- dents. Thereby, their budget for future projects was improved. Probably the most important ftmction of any student council is to be a channel of communication between the faculty and the student body. This Aspen Student Council did a good job in carry- ing out this function. TIEDEMAN'S ,4 Sufi Left to right: Sponsor, Mrs. Barbeeg Jackie Hoaglund, Doug Speer, Editor Fleeta Rowland: Billee Lou Stapleton, Renate Braun, Judy Marolt. Under the able leadership of Fleeta Rowland, the staff has produced what they hope is one of the finest yearbooks in good ole' Aspen I-Iigh's history of books. Everyones thanks to a really important staff member that was tmable to be around when the picture was taken, we mean of course Rolf Durcum, to whom we owe all of the art work. Now that the midnight oil will be burned no more QIt's finished, the book we meany we can look back and say It was fun. The '56-'57 ski season, under coach Gale Spence, has proven to be quite a success- ful and enjoyable year to all members of the Jur1ior Ski Team. Three meets were at- tended by the team: the Jackson Hole, Wyoming High School Meet, the Aspen Junior Team Race, and the Damon George Memorial Meet held at Winter Park. The most outstanding of these meets was the Aspen Team Race in which both the boy's and girl's team won. The girls retaining the traveling trophy which they had won the year be- fore, and the boys winning back the trophy which they had lost to the Steamboat Springs Junior Ski Team two years ago. J Aside from these meets several members were chosen from the team to represent the S.R.M.S.A. at the Junior National Championship meet held at1Reno, Nevada. Two of the outstanding members on the team, Jane Moore and Chuck Ferries, participated in several Senior Races. Chuck was chosen the tenth man on the 1958 American FIS Team. This, five wins and four losses, season was equaled only once. The first year that Aspen played football, this record was tied. The Skiers started their season off on the right foot by beating Buena Vista in the first game of the season, and then wholloping Yampa in the second game. Due to their fine performances, the team placed third in the league, coming in behind only Gypsum and Silt. It was only through the hard work of Coach Burrows and Mr. Bohr- son that our season was so successful. Our congratulations to the coaches and the team for such a great year of football. A . The team showed some of their best performances in the tournaments that they participated in during the season. They beat Basalt and Minturn in the first games of the Debeque Invitational and the Eagle County Tournaments. In the District Tourna- ment, the final games of the year, Aspen entered the finals of the consolation bracket and gave the crowd the most exciting game of the tournament. They revenged two losses to Debeque by beating them, 48-46, in an overtime game. We give our deepest thanks to Coach Burrows for being so patient with our team and for working with them endlessly so that our season could be as successful as it was. ff. 2, . . Aspen's junior varsity basketball team had a most successful season this year. The team was said to be the best junior varsity team that Aspen has seen in a long time. They started the season off right by winning their first two games, and then losing a real close one to New Castle by two points. Several boys from the team got moved up to the varsity during the season, for their fine performances. These boys were Bert Anderson, Greg Livingston, and Don Stapleton. We offer our thanks to Coach Burrows and Mac Rugheimer whose work with the team provided such a successful season. DON STAPLETON mr T , K n, 4 ivylizifli- ' - th Q? O' VT ' W T -1 A . . This year, being the first time that Aspen has had a cross-country team, they proved very successful by taking second place in the state meet at Boulder. l?57 14 64404 1957 was the third consecutive season that Aspen High School had a track team. At the start of the track season, Aspen was the defending champion of the 1956 league meet, and the Class C invitational meet. The team of 1957 had a successful season in spite of the late start and shortened season, both due to bad weather. The team consisted of three Seniors three Juniors, one Sophomore and eight Freshmen. lt was coached by Earl Bur- rows. Also, Mr. Feinsinger and Dave Barbee lent a Helping Hand. The season consisted of seven meets, some of which are mentioned below. The team traveled to Provo,Utah, for the B.Y.U. Invitational Meet. Al- though they gained a lot of useful experience here, no one placed. The league meet was held at the Aspen airport on April 30. Aspen won this meet easily, with a margin of 25 1X2 points. Ribbons were awarded to the first five places, as they were in most of the other meets. Aspen also got a trophy for their superior efforts in this meet. The stateQualifyingMeet was held in Grand Junction. All the B and C schools on the Western slope of Colorado participated in this meet, and the first four places in each event went to the state meet. Aspen qualified six boys for state. Jeff Kell won the pole vault and tied for second in the high jump, Greg FeinsingerQCaptainj won the 180 low hurdles and placed third in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Monty Ward tied for second in the high jump and was part of the mile relay team which placed fourth. The other members of the relay team were Bert Anderson, John Passow, and Keith Patterson. The class B and C state meet was held in Fort Collins. There were 66 teams competing in this meet. Jeff did an exceptional performance here by tieing for first in the pole vault thusly gaining 3 112 points for Aspen. He was the only boy from Aspen to place. The class C invitational meet was canceled because of bad weather. However, the freshmen competed in a special freshman meet in Grand Junction, at which they did very well. Track is now a growing sport on the Western Slope, especially as it is in Aspen. It is hoped that it will continue to grow, and that Aspen will do as well in it as they have so far.
