The mission of our ship was to refuel the Navy's fighting ships underway in the giant Pacific, day or night and in any weather, In order to carry out this mission, the crew of 227 men and officers, was divided into four departments, which in turn were made up of one or more divisions, OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT was charged with the operation and mainte- nance of the navigation, communications and radar systems. SUPPLY DEPART- MENT, fed us, paid us, cut our hair, and washed our clothes. Their storerooms ' were stocked with over 18,000 spare parts, X DIVISION served as well. Ship's office processed our request chits and with medical care and letters from home, DECK DEPARTMENT maintained all our topside spaces. These men had the endless job of ' d the winches that ave fighting off rust, cleaning and painting, They operated the fueling rigs an I g them life. PIRST DIVISION maintained the forward section of the ship and the-small boats, SECOND DIVISION maintained the after section of the FLYING A , while in charge of our four 3 inch 50 caliber guns and small arms, were the men of the'THIRD DIVISION, The ENGINEER- ARTMENT ke t our ship moving We never missed a committment! A real tribute to ING DEP A p . the men who said manned and ready to answer all bells , A DIVISION maintained all our h ll b at en ines B DIVISION auxiliary steam and refrigeration equipment as well as t e sma o g . was in charge of firing the four boilers which provided ASHTABULA'S engines with the over 13,000 horsepower required to turn her screws. M DIVISION activated and maintained the huge candy striped shafts attached to the twin screws, providing ASHTAEULA'S propulsion. E DIVISION repaired and maintained our fantastic electrical system, and changed our light bulbs. They were also responsible for showing the movies.
