“And then there is our shy and sensible Viola Sayler--Viola don't you dare land where I saw you-Y ou were a health teacher in Chicago, which was all right but when you were lecturing to your class you forgot yourself and began to chew gum unattractively and finally lit up a cigarette and told the class about the latest movie. Talking about schools I might tell you about Bernice Klein who is still at Dakota Hall in Ellendale. No don't draw conclusions too fast, she's not going to school anymore but is the Dean of Women there. In Washington D.C., the Secretary of Agriculture, Melvin Baunfxann gives orders to his attractive stenographer LaVerna Funk, who is prudently sharing her apartment with two rather oversized and decidedly formidable lady friends and in the background there is a tall broadshouldered, handsome figure to guide her-- yes, LaVerna is rather old, but she has always said she would marry someone young. LeRoy Dockter has become photographer for the society page in Melvyn Walz's Daily Ashley Sun , which is the leading newspaper of the city. By the way- LeRoy has only girls over thirty in his 'column because of his keen fondne'ss for women. - Talk about women I received a letter from Pfc. Genevieve Retzer who says she likes her work very much. She is a WAC in the Army Sky Anchor's Aweigh. In the suburbs of Ashley I saw Sylvia George surrounded by at least seven little blonds, but after further inquiries I was informed that she had established a home for homeless little girls because she has always had a soft spot for children. I hear a murmur, and gradually in my dream I see a group of women dis- cussing the problems of Today's Children over their tea and crackers. Undoubt- edly it's a Women's Club, judging from the fine quality of their voices as they sang after their discussion. Their voices have developed some--but whose wouldn't, after singing all the lullabys, all the school songs, and all the latest hits that their teen-age children are singing. Among this group were: Violet Spiedel, Ruth Kessel, Helen Strobel, Amanda I-Iarter, and Inez Schumacker. Aaron Haas is a prize farmer partly because his wife, the forrner Loretta Klipfel, is his able assistant, Besides helping her husband on the farm, Loretta has a fine stock of rabbits which she raises and keeps for old time memories sake. Then there is Arlene Hein, great pianist of the day, who has traveled both inland and abroad and is now coming to Ashley for a few numbers she wishes to do for producer I-Ielmuth Huber. Miss Hein's friend, Ruby Nies, was at the time a sing- er and dancer in a swank New York night club practically engaged to her boss. Then again the re was music in my dream and I came upon Howard Wolf, who was Paupernicked fold time music, director. Poor Howard had no co-opera- tion whatsoever from his band members. A Annetta Maier, the violinist, was only playing for her own ears when she was practicing I Love You Truly . Violet Nitschke was dreamily playing I Can't Be- gin to Tell You assisted by the rattling snare drurns of Clarence Benderwald. What music: and then a bang and in came Lloyd Bertsch with his drum and Boogie Woogieff Enjoying the music I glided around in my bed, and suddenly--THE DREAM WAS ENDEDff
