The se beginners were: Fannie Beglau, Wilber Klein, Lorraine Bollinger, Loretta Klipfel, Walter Breitling, Clara Meske, Mercedes Eisenbeis, Justus George, Constance Gulliford, Amanda Harter, Arlene Hein, Lloyd Kempf, Bernice Klein, Harold Klein, Violet Reile, Floyd Schock, Sally Wishek, Colin Stepper, Ronald Stube, Melvin Walz, Olga Dobler, Milton Schaeffer. Miss Hendra Klabo was our instructor. Our picnic was held at Andy Ander- son's grove. In the second grade Miss Leona Hildenbrand was our teacher. Because of unfavorable weather the picnic was held in the classroom. The third grade found us in the new schoolhouse. Our classroom was so much larger that we almost felt lost. Miss Mildred Drews was our instructor, Miss Wanda Carlson began teaching the fourth year but accepted a position in Bismarck, so Miss Anne Stangler took her place and remained our teacher throughout the fifth grade. Mr. Mansager began a tonette band which performed on several occasions. Miss Schulz. was our sixth grade teacher. She began a Junior Chorus. Geog- raphy scrapbooks with fancy covers were made. Our picnic proved to be an exper- ience for all of us when a car got stuck in quick sand. The Senior class was hav- ing a picnic nearby and came to the rescue. Seventh grade our picnic was held at Beaver Lake. Almost all of the students went wading too deep and spent most of their time on the roof of a cottage drying their clothes. Eighth grade we had several large parties during the year. It seemed much easier than former grades because this year we had only four subjects. The grad- uation speaker was Governor Moses. HIGH SCHOOL Our first year in high school began with an enrollment of 66 members, Af- ter initiation everyone felt much older because then we were officially members of the high school. In t.he spring we devoted many class periods to hikes, but were very much disappointed when rainy weather prevented our class picnic. Membership was decreased to 56 in our Sophomore year. This year the school put on a carnival - a practice which is still continued. The annual picnic was held at Hoskins. Because of the fine weather, many students went swimming and acquired a sun tan. The Junior year began with 44 members. Genevieve Hilscher and Iver Walker joined our class. The Junior-Senior banquet was held on May 18. The play, The Valley of Ghosts, directed by Mrs. Mabel Anthony, was given April 6. As we began the last lap of our journey there were 42 Seniors on deck. Irene Schauer left our class and moved to California. The play, Campus Quarentine, under the direction of Mrs. Reinhold Delzer, was presented January 31, May 3 and 4 the Seniors went to Aberdeen, South Dakota for skip day. On our return we spent a pleasant evening at a party the Ellendale Normal gave for all the Senior classes of the surrounding schools. Baccalaureate services were held May Z6 with Reverend Vetter officiating. Commencement took place May 29, Mr. A. C. Van Wyk, Superintendent of Bismarck Schools, was the speaker. Well, yes I have--in fact I am rather great at them, but the one I had last night beat them all--it was rather amusing fin its wayjg on the other hand--well, you be your own judge. It all began in this way, as every senior, I have had but one ambition in the recent past, which you all know is graduation. Even if my conscious mind forgot to let me think beyond that week, my subconscious mind has taken me to the Who's, What's and Where's of the Class of '46 in about the year 1960. What a world I saw: I wish more of you could have had the pleasure of seeing it. Since you didn't, I will tell you of it. The greatest movie center of the midwest, Ashley, was a busy scene with the activities of our great celebrity I-Ielmuth I-Iuber's 'opening night' for his first successful movie entitled The Wild Calls' . Without my telling you so, you must know that it was a good picture, for the leading man was our dashing Floyd Schock, not only a great actor of his day, but also a notable man of the city of Ashley for he owned half of it. Acting opposite Mr. Schock was Miss Priscella Hogen, We formerly knew her as Sharon Hogenson. The movie deal was a good subject but dreams are dreams and they head from one thing to another. I am sure I shivered in my sleep when I heard a grinding sound zooming from an upper story apartment window on Hall Street. Upon inspection I found that it was only our famous dentist, Donald Fisher. His victim was Pearl Bertsch. I-Ie was trying to fill her false teeth. After conversing with Mrs. Wilbert Sayler, the former Gertrude Martz, who was now Dentist Fisher's part-time assistant. I learned that Jeanette Baumann was now manager of a small and orderly cafe on the next block. Though profits were very small Jeanette enjoyed her work for she could have all she wanted to eat and dating was her one and only hobby. Long Lake is a cute little place not very far from here but last night I saw it as a very important metropolitan area, and in the heart of the city I saw within a spacious church Pastor Milton Schauer aglow with religious ardor. From care- fully polished shoes to his well-groomed curling mustache Pastor Schauer was sway- ing the congregation with his thrilling experiences. The Pastor was particularly aroused by the recent divorce scandal of Irene Krause, and the wedding bells again tolling for her. The Schauers seemed to have succumbed to the art of religion for in my dream I saw LeRoy Schauer performing the baptismal ceremonies in St. Paul's Church at Austin, Minnesota, from where his pretty young wife stemmed. Loretta Schauer was a successful missionary in Hawaii lecturing to a young group of fuzzy haired natives--she loved them all: Olga Dobler, I-Qvelyn Miller, Gladys Nitschke, and Violet Zimmerman call themselves the Cackling Gal Incorporated for they have established themselves in Danzig, North Dakota. They specialize in White Leghorns and Rhode Island Reds. Iver Walker and Walter Breitling have taken up farming. Iver has been fair- ly successful, but Walter believes in taking one day of the week off, rain or shine, to argue with the county agent Fannie Beglau, on better methods of farming, mostly for the sake of his fondness for arguing, so he hasn't been quite so successful as Iver. Even though teachers have made us all rather edgy in the past, and we have all vowed never to teach, I saw last night-plain as daylight-Genevieve Hilscher, her pretty dark hair graying at the temples, sitting before the huge senior class of 1960. The class was noisy, but Genevieve had decided to say no niore for she said to her- self, Seniors are Seniors . And then there is our shy and sensible Viola Sayler--Viola don't you dare land where I saw you-Y ou were a health teacher in Chicago, which was all right but when you were lecturing to your class you forgot yourself and began to chew gum unattractively and finally lit up a cigarette and told the class about the latest movie. Talking about schools I might tell you about Bernice Klein who is still at Dakota Hall in Ellendale. No don't draw conclusions too fast, she's not going to school anymore but is the Dean of Women there. In Washington D.C., the Secretary of Agriculture, Melvin Baunfxann gives orders to his attractive stenographer LaVerna Funk, who is prudently sharing her apartment with two rather oversized and decidedly formidable lady friends and in the background there is a tall broadshouldered, handsome figure to guide her-- yes, LaVerna is rather old, but she has always said she would marry someone young. LeRoy Dockter has become photographer for the society page in Melvyn Walz's Daily Ashley Sun , which is the leading newspaper of the city. By the way- LeRoy has only girls over thirty in his 'column because of his keen fondne'ss for women. - Talk about women I received a letter from Pfc. Genevieve Retzer who says she likes her work very much. She is a WAC in the Army Sky Anchor's Aweigh. In the suburbs of Ashley I saw Sylvia George surrounded by at least seven little blonds, but after further inquiries I was informed that she had established a home for homeless little girls because she has always had a soft spot for children. I hear a murmur, and gradually in my dream I see a group of women dis- cussing the problems of Today's Children over their tea and crackers. Undoubt- edly it's a Women's Club, judging from the fine quality of their voices as they sang after their discussion. Their voices have developed some--but whose wouldn't, after singing all the lullabys, all the school songs, and all the latest hits that their teen-age children are singing. Among this group were: Violet Spiedel, Ruth Kessel, Helen Strobel, Amanda I-Iarter, and Inez Schumacker. Aaron Haas is a prize farmer partly because his wife, the forrner Loretta Klipfel, is his able assistant, Besides helping her husband on the farm, Loretta has a fine stock of rabbits which she raises and keeps for old time memories sake. Then there is Arlene Hein, great pianist of the day, who has traveled both inland and abroad and is now coming to Ashley for a few numbers she wishes to do for producer I-Ielmuth Huber. Miss Hein's friend, Ruby Nies, was at the time a sing- er and dancer in a swank New York night club practically engaged to her boss. Then again the re was music in my dream and I came upon Howard Wolf, who was Paupernicked fold time music, director. Poor Howard had no co-opera- tion whatsoever from his band members. A Annetta Maier, the violinist, was only playing for her own ears when she was practicing I Love You Truly . Violet Nitschke was dreamily playing I Can't Be- gin to Tell You assisted by the rattling snare drurns of Clarence Benderwald. What music: and then a bang and in came Lloyd Bertsch with his drum and Boogie Woogieff Enjoying the music I glided around in my bed, and suddenly--THE DREAM WAS ENDEDff CLASS SONG QTune of Pagan Love Song j Soon we'l1 leave our classmates So we'll say farewell, But our Alma Mater Will ever be the Best, But our country's calling To it we belong, And we want to serve it So Classmates, Farewell: C LASS POEM We have to leave our days of school and fun, And it makes us feel a little sad, But we know our work here is done, When remembering the good times we've had And all the hours we have toiled away It makes us wish that we could stay. But the time has come to say goodbye To school days, teachers, and classmates. But there's no need to heave a sigh For now we all begin new trades. And throughout life's weary way We'll meet again some day. Now is the time to begin our lives anew For we know our mission here is done, So to teachers and classmates we bid adieu. New work shall begin with the rising sun, lt now makes us all feel a little blue Because we have to say, Farewell to You . CAN' YOU IMAGINE ? ? ? Can you imagine ..... We have fed upon history, physics, chemistry, algebra, geometry, English, bookkeeping, psychology, biology, and other mental foods until we have highly developed cases of information. All they can do for us is to let us graduate. We are entering into a war torn world where men have suffered and survived, where now they are faced with many great problems, some of which we will be part and try to help solve. But no matter where we go or what our destiny, we shall always cherish our many memories of our high school days, where we have had our taste of glory and defeat of good times. We can not, and have no right to say what you, our undex-classmates, can or cannot do. To the juniors we sayg Carry on and make the best of your high school days and to all classesg work together to achieve one end --- a bigger and better school.
