THE 1967 YEARLING INVITES YOU TO RELIVE TOUR YEARS AT ASHLAND HIGH SCHOOL ASHLAND, MISSISSIPPI COACH HOWELL With sincere admiration and appreciation for a job well done, we, the Annual Staff dedicate the 1967 Yearling to Coach Jamie Howell, a faithful worker, devoted friend, and wise counselor. 2 ADMINISTRA TION COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT To have the privilege and opportunity to serve as Administrator of Benton County Schools during this transitional period of our school system which has never occurred before is within itself a challenge. The recorded events of the year 1966-67 should in future years serve as a tremendous reminder of the transitions which are taking place today. To be in the mid-stream of historical events should serve as an inspiration to meet the changing demands of our time. It is most fitting that the administration, fac- ulty, student body, and parents learn to accept responsibility and adjust to forced and mandatory educational deviations. In closing may I say, Students of Ashland School, set your goals high, have faith in the Creator of the Universe and fellow man. Believe in yourself and you will finish the race of life successfully. Sincerely, J. D. Bennett County Superintendent of Education 4 PRINCIPAL The steadfast purpose, honest endeavor and ardent inspiration of the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-Seven has left an unprecedented tradition in keeping with the fine history of Ashland High School. To each of you and your parents should go the credit for the success achieved during this school year. Without your help it would not have been possible. Please accept my humble and sincere appreciation for your assistance and under- standing, during this my first administrative endeavor. My congratulations and best wishes to Mrs. Farese, the staff, and to the student body on this fine production that has recorded activities of 1966-67. 5 BENTON COUNTY SCHOOL LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Elond Autry, Mr. Robert Jordan, Mr. Earl Hines, Mr. Eugene West, and Mr. Harry Rogers. 6 FACULTY MRS. (UPI) — Cathy Childers hit for 29 points here Friday night to lead Ash- land over Tylertown 56 - 46 in the state Class A girls high school cage tournament. Busy Time For Ashland Coach Ahead ASHLAND, Miss. —Having two high school basketball teams m the state tournament can create some problems—es- pecially if both of them have games at the same time at different sites. Coach Jamie Howell at Ash- land High School has that pro- blem and a little juggling around has solved at least for the opening round games. Ashland’s Devillettes, North State Class A champions, had a 7 p.m. Friday date with Tyler- town. at Brandon while the Blue Devils and Sumrall were sche- duled at Forest Hill at the same hour. Shannon's Raiderettes and South Lauderdale agreed to move their 8:15 Friday game to 7 o’clock with the Ashland affair going in the nightcap. Howell could have more pro- blems, if bis ball clubs continue to survive. The boys were third- ranked in Class A North State. If both teams win, they’ll play an hour apart in the semi-finals Saturday But after that, it will take some additional figuring. What's the strategy, Coach? 78 TOURNEY OF CHAMPS' OPENS UP ON FRIDAY Ashland 6 Gets Ready BY PHIL WALLACE Daily News Sports Writer Coach Jamie Howell at Ashland High School be- lieves that perhaps the major ingredient in his State Class A champion girls’ basketball team is its balance. The success of our girls and boys was unsurpassed as evidenced by their records, girls 39 wins and 5 losses, A-State Champions; the boys won 39 and lost 4 and were No. 3 in the State. The win totals are the best in the State. No other team won as many games. This has been a most enjoyable and unforgettable year. The memories should nev- er die of this year. The words that have been your motto for the past three years should continue to be a part of your life. ’’Anything worth doing is worth doing well.
