ASHLAND CONSOLIDATED HIGH SCHOOL Ashland, Mississippi £)edicu tion “The old order changeth yielding place to new, and God fulfills himself in many ways.” .... Tennyson. The student body of Ashland High School realize that we are living in a new day as far as educational advantages in Benton County are concerned. Futhermore, we realize that our parents and friends of the school have made this day possible. Without the united efforts of our citizens, our new school never would have materialized. Realizing that our new building is a testimonial of your faith in us as the youth of today, and a symbol of the hope that you hold for and enlightened citizenry of tomorrow, we, the annual staff, dedicate this book to our new high school building, and in so doing likewise dedicate it to each of you. 2 Grammar School Building Vocational Building High School Building Cafeteria Teacher’s Home fis MR. ROY HARRELL School Superientendent Dear Students, For the first time we are attempting to interpret our school to our com- munity through the medium of the school annual. The people of our district have a big stake in our school. They have been magnificient in every move we have made for progress. That we may not break faith with them, we, from the administration to the children in the first grade, must continually re- dedicate ourselves to the real purpose of all our effort, that of providing dynamic training in good citizenship. You have an excellent annual, one you will cherish through the years. Let us not forget, however, that students portray to their parents and to the public, most often indirectly, the real place the school holds in their lives. While we can not pay for the outlay of our system in a material sense, we can expect continued support only as we give back to the community the type of citizens that our society recognizes as acceptable and useful. This is no easy task but the challenge is worth all the effort. We are happy that is our job to do. Together we shall not fail. Sincerely, Roy Harrell 4 MRS. C. B. BRIGHT, JR. Home Economics. MR. J. Joy Ann Crum, world's great woman lawyer, argued a divorce case yester- day in behalf of Alice Leak, famous opera star, versus Roger Renick, carpenter, Alice is charging inhuman treatment. Kenneth Courson, multi-millionaire, last night gave Dr. J. A. King and nurse, Melba Akin, a check for $10,000 each. They saved his life when he took an overdose of sleeping pills. Ouida McGill, missionary to China, recently wed President Si Chan. It has been rumored that this wedding took place to promote world peace. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Jordan were blessed with the arrival of quadruplets last night. She is the former Nancy Wilkerson. Both mother and children are reported doing fine. Wayne Childers and Billy Weatherly have succeeded in their experiment to de- velop a sweet Irish Potato. These will soon be on the market at 50 cents per pound and should net these gentlemen farmers quite a large sum of money. A superb dinner was enjoyed by editors of the entire Mid-South last night. The feast was prepared by none other than the wonderful chef, Malcolm Johnson. The main event was a speech by Mary Ann Renick, reporter for the New York Times. Mrs. Frances Gresham, formerly Frances McGill, has just published her third book at only twenty-seven years of age. This one is entitled How to Get Along in an English Classroom. As I turn through my paper I see news of more classmates in the Sports Section. Sue Griffin, world champion wrestler, last night defeated again Togo Pogo from China. Glenora Janes, the beautiful blond from Ashland Bend, was last night named United States entrant in the Women's Tennis Singles of the Olympics. Pat Davis, pitcher for the New York Giants, walked all the batters that came up for Brooklyn. Nevertheless, the Giants won the World Series. Now I turn to the society page where find news of ever more classmates. Socialite Shirley Daniel, formerly Shirley Weatherly, gave another wonderful party last night. This one was in honor of an old classmate, Mrs. Neil Stroupe. She was formerly Patricia Ferrell and was recently selected Mrs. America of 1962. Neil Melton, famous heartbreaker of the 60's, has scored another triumphant hit in his lastest play, Three Sweethearts Have I . Betty Ormon, the beautiful divorcee, has done it again, married for the ninth time. This sets a new all time record. As I come to the last page of my paper, I see by the ads that: Miss Carolyn McLeod has set up a day nursery for pre-school children. Children of working mothers are especially wanted. Seth Holbrook, phone 45-678, will do janitor work in a high school gym. 40 In September of 1941 Miss Elizabeth Garrett greeted eight members of our present class. For various reasons, the remaining members of this first grade class moved or dropped out during the next eight years. The first three years we were in school we presented three operettas. Additional activities began when we reached the seventh grade. An outstanding event of this year was a trip to Ripley to see Gone With the Wind. In the eighth grade Mrs. Nan Renick was our spon- sor. That year we had a Christmas party at Pat Davis1 home. The next year Alberta Creasie and Iva Mae Hughey married and left us. Bobby Joe Miller and Geraldine Griggs dropped out for other reasons. Janie Hopkins, Kenneth Courson, and James McKee joined us. We began the tenth grade with Mr. Eugne Hamilton as our sponsor. We went to Tippah Tower on a hay ride for a wiener roast. Mary Beth Hobson married during the summer and did not begin with us this year. Frances Agee, Peggy Sills, Fay Taylor, William Bumpas, and Asa Jordan were dropped from the roll. In our Junior year, 32 were enrolled. With Mrs. Renick as our sponsor we gave our first big play, Cinderella Rose, in February. In April we honored the Seniors with a Junior-Senior Banquet centering around a rainbow theme. When we began our Junior year, we learned that we had lost Sue Davis and Fay Hobson, who had married, Ann Autry, Wade Courson, Junior Elliott, Junior Houston, Alton Jordan, Richard McKenzie, Nell Kimery, James McKee., Sam Norris, May Taylor, Ray Taylor, Junior Wilbanks, Joe Wilkerson, Joe Gross, and Robbie Dale Cox. Before the year was over Janie Hopkins moved. When we began our Senior year, we had only twenty-three. Mr. W. D. Johnson was selected as our sponsor. We welcomed Ray Jordan to our class this year. Our Senior play, Hillbilly Weddin was presented in February. V 41 Innua In the later part of November, Mr. Harrell summoned a group of students and teachers to discuss the new annual. The pictured below were told that they had been selected to edit the first annual in our new high school. The Yearling' was chosen for a name and with it went the hope that each year a new Yearling would come forth and each would be better than the last one. We of the staff have done our best to present to you an annual which you will treasure in years to come and one which you think will well represent our school. It has been a great pleasure for us to do this, and we sincerely hope each of you enjoys The 1953 Yearling.
