Marx September 23-The Purgolders opened their gridiron season against Wakeheld with a practi- cally green team. As the game went on the team seemed to play better and threatened to score many times. September 29-Traveling far, the Weikalmen invaded Chippewa Falls only to be defeated by a score of 2O'O. Chippewa ran rough shod over the Ashlanders throughout the game. October 6-Under the broiling sun, the Purgolders played Superior Central on the Centralites' field. The game ended with a scoreless tie. This was one of the warmest days and hottest games of the season. October 12-The Ashlanders finally got the itch for victory and defeated Hurley 14-0. Whee! This made Ashland Highs homecoming complete. October zc-Playing Ironwood there on a sort of cool night, the Purgolders simply couldn't warm up to a victory and were defeated 21-o. October 2711-he Purgolders played their best game against East. The Superiorites came with the idea that Ashland was a push over, but found that it took Lady Luck to help them emerge from the close battle with aw 13-12 victory, November 7-Six seniors donned their suits the last time for the Bessemer game, which ended with a zo-o defeat for Ashland. The football season as a whole was very good, considering the raw material Coach Weikal had to round into shape in so short a time. P .K 4 S MR. BALL 39 LEONARD WESTMAN-A senior. Played left end, one of the hardest positions on a football team. Showed plenty of courage in diving in front of interference. LENERTZ ERNST-Played fine ball at center and backed up the line in defense admirably. Spotted plays before they were started and busted 'em up. Has another big year left. CHESTER OLSON-A big, powerful man who played at guard. Capable of assimilating punishment. Should be a valuable man in line next year. FRANK KIOCEWICZ-Best all-around player for several years. Nfade all conference halfback in his last year. XVas a deadly taekler. JOHN SAXDSTROX4-Played guard and tackle. Cave good account of himself on every occasion. Will be 'sorely missed. BOB LARSON-Llunior. Vicious tackler and powerful line smasher. Vifill be a valuable man next year. Endowed with do or die spirit which will carry him far. HARLEY BASSITORD-Best punter in years. Also a good passer. With lots of hard work should make a good lineman next year. Often called on to get team out of bad spots. 75 ll ll I 1 3. .,,,.,. , 4 lt! maqggpx ,V if q,,gh,,Qi':vi
