This can be achieved through learning how to speak and practicing what has bee11 learned, The goal ol' the speech club at Ashland Higl1 School is to help students learn how to express themselves. 'l'hrough the help and guidance ol' Mrs. Nlarguerite Del Vecchio the members ol' the club take part in all phases ol public speaking. 'l'hey give recitations and speak at the tournaments and on many other programs. Ainong the tournaments tl1e Regional and State Speech Contests are two ol' the most important ones. .Xt these contests the speech club IllCllllJCl'S take part i11 the dil- lerent phases of speaking wl1icl1 include oratorical in- terpretations, dran1atic interpretations, poetry reading, extemporaneous speaking, original oratory. humorous monologue, discussions, and radio speaki11g. .Xlthough all these are very important lorms ol speaking, probably tl1e most well-known is debating. 'lihere are always a great many students wl1o enter tl1is lield and debate o11 subjects of world-wide interest as well as tl1e subjects ol interest Ollly to tl1e SlllllClll5. The school has several debate teams that take part in tl1e speech actiyities and the tournaments in Kentucky and a lew other states. lt is tl1e goal oli all speech club members to belong to tl1e National lforensic League. I11 order to become a member ol the league, the speech students Illtlsl partic- ipate in a certain llllllllJL'l' ol activities, thereby winning points. .Xlter tl1e student has earned tl1e required 11u1n- ber ol points, he lllCll becomes a member ol the league.
