Senots y Senotitus Tienen tm Ano Qcupaclo Teaching Spanish in the elementary grades was the main project of the Spanish Club. Several of the second year students taught once each week at Means Grade School. At the request of other grade schools these studentfteachers put on special programs, one of which was a radio broadcast. A large portion of the club funds was used in buying supplies for the student teaching. At the weekly meetings held in a members home, the programs usually consisted of vocabulary games, special music, and slide films. Some meetings which were held at school during Spanish class were conducted entirely in Spanish. In addition to the activities mentioned above, there were a popcorn booth entered in the Harvest Festival, a Christmas party, and the annual picnic. The Spanish Club, organized for the purpose of furthering the students' interest in Spanish customs, arts, and language, had as its sponsor, Mr. Clarence Creech, teacher of Spanish. Tlieyite hllll' joy -'c'c Will oi' Lose Coach Denver Balls return as head coach to Ashland High School seemed to inspire the Tomcats to strive harder than ever before. Tomcats once more enjoyed a successful season with four wins and one tie out of nine games. Besides Coach Ball. the team was ahly led hy Coaches Sang, Miller, Cohurn. and Lavoy along with Cofcaptains Bucky Phillips and Buffalo Hopkins, The summer camp at Dewey Lake not only gave the team a chance to toughen up, but also gave them a chance to gain valuahle practice in running plays. This practice proved to he a great help during the 1954 season. Loss of players hecause of injuries this year was less than in former years. hut it still lessened the strength of the team. The loss of Larry Highley. who was to he a cofcaptain. was a hlow to the teams linefup. Coach Ball was depending heavily on him for the season. Larry suffered a neck injury in a practice session and was un' ahle to participate during the season. Although minor injuries were suffered hy many. everyone else was ahle to participate most of the time. At the hrst of the season. the Tomcats were unahle to provide proper hlocking for their runners. hut they improved in that department as the season progressed. They also had more than their share of fumhles and penalties, The Tomcats, however. in spite of these faults. racked up 137 points against 47 for the opposition. lviost of their faults had been corrected by the end of the season, and the record of the Tomcats for 1954 is one that everyone at Ashland High School can he proud of. u 111, 1,111N.1J11.
