Social Studies While the courses offered in social studies are limited in number, the topics actually studied include the whole world and relate to history, geography, economics, psychology and government. This is the study area in which students of different talents, abilities, backgrounds and attitudes have the opportunity to learn from each other as well as from books. Mathematics Mathematics consists of patterns, just as do art, poetry, and music. The patterns of art are expressed in color: those of poetry, in words, those of music, in tones and rhythms. The mathematician has no ma- terials with which to work, such as colors, rhyming words, and tones. Instead, its patterns are construct- ed with ideas, and if they are more permanent than those of the artist, the poet, and the musician, it is because ideas wear less with time than do colors, words, and tones.
