CAROUSEL One of the greatest accomplishments of each school year in Arts High is the production of the annual opera. Last spring Carousel proved a tremendous success. The entire Music Department—Mr. Rocco Pesile, head of the department and the orchestra conductor, Mr. William Pickett, chorus director, Mrs. Gertrude Shapiro, and Mr. Gerald Tobio—spent many hours in organizing and rehearsing the show. The Art Department earned many thanks in designing the sets and costumes for Carousel, and Mrs. Hiller and the home economics classes skillfully brought their costume designs into actual existence. Its hondsome barker, Billy Bigelow, marries one of the local girls, Julie Jordan. But both lose their jobs. Billy, far from honest, determines to join two friends in a robbery. Faced with capture and imprisonment, he stabs himself to death. Aftor his suicide Julie lives only for her little girl. In a poignant final scene of Carousel, fifteen years later at the girl's graduation, Billy is present, although invisible to Julie or their daughter. With its famous songs, beautiful dances, colorful costumes, and interesting story Carousel was one of Arts High's most successful operettas. 15
