He was onboard the USS SOUTH CARO INA, a battleship in the Atlantic Fleet, and was aide and First Lieutenant to Commander, Battleship Division ONE during World War L He served in the Navy Department's Bureau of Aeronautics and Naval Personnel and in the Ojjice of the Chief of Naval Operations early in World War II and Commander, Carrier Divisions 11 and 6, and on the Sldjjf of Commander, Aircraj' Pacific, during the latter part of that war. At the outbreak of Korean hostilities he was serving as Commander in Chief U.S. Pacmc Fleet, later being given the responsibility of the Marianas Bonin area and the Phillipines Formosa area. Born in Chicago, Illinois, in February 1896, he entered the Naval Academy in 1912 after graduating from High School in Grinnel, Iowa. He graduated and was commis- sioned in 1916 and was assigned to the USS SOUTH CARO- LINA. From the end of World WarI until 1920 he served stay? duty. In April 1920 he was assigned to flight training school and was designated a Naval Aviator in November of that year. Follow on assignments included the newly established Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department, as well as the battleships COLORADO and PENNSYLVANIA. l . CDR William E. fBill1 Hardy was born in Queens, New York and was commissioned through the NROTC program when he graduated from the Iowa State University in 1981. His initial assignment was to the USS SPRUANCE KDD-9631 were he served as Gunnery Officer, Fire Control Officer, Navigator and Combat System Officer. In September 1985 he reported to the Naval Military Personnel Command as the Rating Assignment Officer for the Sea, Special Programs Branch. Commander Hardy then reported aboard the USS KINKAID IDD-9652 as the Combat Systems Officer in February 1989. In November 1991, Commander Hardy was assigned to the staff of the Commander, US Seventh Fleet, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan were he served as the Fleet Scheduler until March 1994. His next assignment was as the Executive Officer of USS STUMP IDD-9782 in Norfolk, VA. In November 1995 he reported to the US Naval War College in Newport, RI and he graduated wi th distinction from the Naval Staff College in December 1996. Commander Hardy's most recent assignment was to the U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, VA where he served as the Chief of Special Technical Operations until February 2000. CDR Hardy assumed command of USS ARTHUR W. RADFORD KDD-9681 in June' 2000. CDR Bill Hardy is married to the former Mary Montgomery of St Paul, MN. Schlegel LCDR Schlegel is a 1985 graduate of Washington and Lee University and received his commission in 1986 upon completion of Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. His first sea tour was USS SPARTANBURG COUNTY CLST 11925, where he served as Combat Information Center Officer, Electronic Material Officer and Gunnery Officer. In 1988 LCDR Schlegel transferred t0 USS HARRY E. YARNELL CCG 175 for a tour as Damage Control Assistant. He served as Cruise Missile Instructor in his first shore duty at Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic. LCDR Schlegel served a single longer department head tour HS Engineer Officer in USS SCOTT CDDG 9955 from 1993 to 1996. Following this tour he was assigned to the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet staff as the Officer-in-Charge of the Tomahawk Afloat Planning System and the Tomahflyvk action officer for the Director of Operations, Plans and Policy. He assumed duUCS as Executive Officer in USS ARTHUR W. RADFORD CDD 9685 in May 1999. His next duty assignment is the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Arlington, Va LCDR Schlegel holds a Master of Arts degree from Old Dominion Universifl' d an a Naval War College diploma for completion of Joint Professional Military Education Phase I. As OT Divisions come we are quite a large crew. We grew in size throughout the deployment with the help of our friends from Naval Security Group Activity Rota, Fort Gordon and Bahrain. We are a divi- sion made up of Electronic Warfare and Cryptologic Technicians and an Intelli- gence Specialist to add a good mix. Some of our primary duties include: detec- tion and identification of electronic emitters, tracking and localization of sur- face and air contacts, collection and analyzing of radio spectrum messa e traff , g ic processing, and intelligence fusion of all this date for daily operational briefs. All three ratings worked together to provide CIC a better overall tactical picture.
