This June it makes its debut as the setting for the solemnity of the 195] graduation ceremonies — “STILL THE NEW ARTHUR HILL HIGH SCHOOL AFTER ELEVEN YEARS” THE LONG SLIM LINES of the Arthur Hill High School have become known and loved by most citizens’ of Saginaw. By serving the commu- nity as a meeting place and the students as an educational center, the school though eleven years old is still the new Arthur Hill to many Saginawians. ‘S1 Legenda Through the weeks and months of collecting, writing, and editing this 1951 edition of the LEGENDA, the staff has become more deeply aware than ever before of the value and significance of service. We sincerely believe that if mankind is ever to find a path out of its troubled areas, into a land of peace and happy advancement, it will be achieved only through the universal dedication of mankind to the cause of truly serving others. If in a small way this golden thread of service weaves its way through the 1951 LEGENDA, we will be content. ‘51 Legenda IN RECOGNITION of her loyalty and devo- tion to Arthur Hill High School and the com- munity, and of her years of inspirational guidance to students, this fifty-first edition of the LEGENDA is affectionately dedicated to Miss Mattie G. Crump, English teacher and director of publications. A VICTORY DANCE was given last May in celebration of the com- bined efforts of Arthur Hill and Saginaw High schools in the passing of the bond issue for a new Saginaw High School. Dance bands from both Arthur Hill and Saginaw High played alternately during the evening as students mingled in a friendly happy spirit of accomplish- ment. ‘51 Legenda First HONOR ALUMNUS Arthur Hill MR. HARRY P. BAKER, ‘91, became Arthur Hill High School’s first Honor Alumnus at the annual Honors Assembly May 16, 1951. This recognition, marking the 60th anniversary of his graduation from Arthur Hill and his retirement from 18 years on the Saginaw Board of Education, came to Mr. Baker for his unselfish service and unfailing devotion to community and country. In naming their candidate, the Treanor Chapter of Quill and Scroll, in behalf of the school, asked that the term ‘service’ refer to business stability; participa- tion in public affairs; social respect; successful family life; and, most important, the proper attitude and philosophy toward life and its responsibilities. The Honor Alumnus was presented with a certificate of Service and his picture was hung in the community room where guests, honor students and their parents congratulated Mr. Baker during the faculty reception that followed the cere- mony. MR. pleasantness that creates an atmosphere of cooperation and encouragement. 1. M. BROCK, principal, guides the activities of Arthur Hill High School with a IN MEMORY OF .. . THE WORK OF EXPERTS seems to move with limpid tranquillity. Mr. BEN DAMBERG was one of those who did his work so well that one might easily take his expertness for granted. He was a happy person in his work in school and in activities outside. He was positive in his views and fair in his judgments. To the many of us who through the years have admired him, his family and his work, it is with a deep sense of loss that we have been forced to part with him. WITH HER quiet understanding, Miss FRANCES HINRICHSEN served Arthur Hill High School as librarian. The library was run with an efficiency that was recognized by the students who used its facilities. By assisting all those who needed help and in- formation, Miss Hinrichsen endeared herself to the students. She was admired by the faculty for her knowledge and industry. Her memory will long endure in the high school she loved and served so well. ‘51 Legenda FACULTY Meet For Business And Pleasure ae REPRESENTATIVES TO THE SAGINAW TEACHERS’ CLUB, who are elected by the faculty, are: MRS. This year, 1754 Hillites bought SO’s, from a total of 1807 Arthur Hill students. Sally, Tomsa, and Mrs. Bach led the girls to an- other victory over the boys. Bernard, Bob, and Mr. Giesecke were the boys’ campaign leaders. Annually there is high spirited rivalry be- tween Hillite Jacks and Jills to see who will sell the highest percent of SO’s. The boys again conceded the victory and paid their penalty by entertaining the school with an assembly. TUBERCULOSIS SEAL SALES leaders BERNADINE HARNOIS and DOLLIE YATES check the total sales amount, $191.41, with their faculty adviser, MR. JOHN DAY, at the close of the sales drive. They distributed at least $5.00 worth of seals to each of the 56 advisories. Mrs. Sallie M. Brown’s advisory led with a total of $7.00. All this money was sent to the TB Center at the City Hall to provide care for Saginaw’s stricken patients, to provide free X-rays, and to educate the community to understand the disease. Arthur Hill STUDENT PUBLICITY COMMITTEE leaders of the Parent-Teachers Asso- ciation Membership Drive, NANCY BOELL, MRS. MARY STEWART, ad- viser, MIRIAM BISHOP, chairman, MARY LOU BERNECKER, and ELFRIEDA BEYER led the 56 advisories to a grand total of over 1600 P-TA mem- bers. During the fourth hour lunch period CHARLES GROSS, AUGUST LEASCH, FERGUS TAIT, and NORMAN GROSS are drying silverware. 15 IN MANY CLASSES there are the students who wish to extend their activities beyond class work. They are interested in work that allows an informal view point on the various subjects. From this desire clubs have stemmed, giving the students a chance to become active in school affairs, to meet other students, and to enjoy an enlarged social life. Because so many students belong to several clubs it would be duplicating again and again to picture the officers of each club separately. In the Science De- partment are Alchemist, Biology, Crucibles, Future Homemakers of America, and Future Farmers of America Clubs. The Mathematics Department sponsors the Pythagorians. Recently Future Teachers and Future Nurses have organized. Language clubs consist of French, German, Latin, and Spanish. Journalism achievement is honored with membership in Quill Scroll Society. Potluck has grown in popularity until two sessions were necessary this year. The south half of the school gathered April 11 and the north half, April 18.
