The cry of "gold" defied the speed of normal communication methods, and the lust for gold, in turn, gave the Pioneers ample reason for by-passing the midwest in their rush to settle in California. Thus 1849, too, became the year of the pioneer in California. 1954 was the year of the Pioneers in Artesia, the "aio de oro" for Artesia High 1.
