ARSENAL CANNUN Volume 74 1988 1500 E. Michigan Indianapolis, In 46201 Y ivkvi X XI. X . 7 X! Continuing 75 Years Excellence Q.,,, Y , nd so we go hen the Tech campus was purchased by the federal government, it was not meant to be a high school. Abraham Lincoln approved the 585,000 purchase July 11, 1862, for an arsenal for Civil War material. The Arsenal Ccompleted in 18655 was used to store heavy artillery, lighter arms, and a limited amound of ammunition. More than 100,000 rifles were once stocked in the storehouse. The seven-story tower looked over a drive- way where horse-drawn vehicles entered to unload. A hand-powered elevator lifted the crates to upper floors. Knapsaclss were man- ufactured in the shops and artillery buildings. On April 18, 1908, the cannon was fired for the last time, and an arts and trades school under the supervision of the Winona Agricultural and Technical Institute began. After a variety of uses for the grounds, IPS tools over the school in 1912 because of the crowding at Manual and Shortridge, Principal Milo Stuart began the tra- dition of excellent education now taken for granted at Arsenal Technical High School. With the Indiana Supreme Court's ruling in 1916, Tech continued its 75 years of education ex- cellence. Although Stuart was built in 1989, it has been re- modeled several times over the years, the latest being the magnet programs' laboratories. 1 sir ffl? till iitaii Combining country quiet and city drive makes the Ar- senal campus special to 75 years of graduates who have donated many gifts to the school. i ..,.f 3925.- ,Lf - ' "-'NS ' I x C U U lllllnq g, l Ill I I Ill nl. , 1 .. 1 f H ffi..1'ti- l I 939-1 , alt, .
