Today, we have Qlf well-trained teachers to teach us the advanced A B C's. Besides having a hroad educational hackground, many are talented in other fields. Their hohhies range from fishing, golf, and farming to dancing and to weaving. llany are collectors of things like stanips. pitchers, antique glass, and rare children's hooks. In school they work congenially with each other, and their friendships aren't centered in their own departments. either. They enjoy the all-school teas and meetings which give thent a chance to heconie better acquainted. llany get together after school hy organizing hook cluhs, fishing together, or just visiting and 'tis rumored, some niay even play canasta. Besides the fun they have together, many work in national, state, and local professional groups, and several of our faculty are ofiicers in these organizations. And a lot. of theni take husnian,s holidays hy teaching classes and directing choirs in Sunday schools. ive don't understand why, hut 501118 like school so well, they go themselves, in sunnner. Sixty-one of our teachers have lllE1StCt',S degrees and three hold doctorates! Our faculty rates pretty high. Students joke a lot ahout their teachers, hut when you conie right down to it, they're a pretty good hunch. Each fall tlte faculty tea is held, giving the teaclters a chance to get reacquainted and also to meet the new teachers before school really gets underway. Note that the men come. too. Mr. Fred R. Gorman directs student aid for boys. supervises fee collection and 1lSSlglIlll0lll of teacher loads. Mr. Dale F. Griffin our business agent, handles the finances, purchases, buildings. the grounds and equiplncnt. Mr. J. '1'ech's well-rounded and extensive athletic program has paid large dividends, among which are the fine rec- ords turned in hy the Green and tvhite foothallers this season. Head Coach Howard Longshore, ahly assisted hy coaches George llihal and lvallace Potter, guided the '50 pigskin pushers to a city co-champiousllip and third place in the rugged North Central Conference. Such was the versatility and drive of the Green grid- ders, that they compiled a total of T52 points against city competition without allowing a single touchdown scored against them! The foundation of the varsity are the hard-working reserves under Coach George Mihai. He uncovered and developed a great deal of talent for next year's squad in piloting the "BH" to a three won-two lost 1'ecord. .:'-1 Jack Hanna and lirnest lledcalfe, alumni in their first year of coaching at 'l.'ech, handled the "Little Greeniesf' Lack of speed in the hackiield was the "mon- keywrench" in the cogs of the fresh grid machine as the Hannamen tied one and lost five games. Vnder the coaching of Herman Hinshaw, the Greenclads started fast and Continued that way throughout the season. Starting with a nucleus of veterans Joe Sexson and llyron lloriarity, Coach Hinshaw molded a powerful team with last year's reserves: llyron Garland, Bill livans, Gilhert Bierman, Boh Bishop, Norman lvil- son, Bill Bliller, and Frank Beasley. The hattling Green and lvhite won Techts third consec- utive city championship, but in their quest for their third straight sectional crown, they lost a heart-hreaker t0 Broad Ripple, 51-4-9, in the first-round action. The four season losses came at the hands of North Cenf tral Conference foes which were rated among the top ten of the state hy the press polls. Charlie llaas. first-year mentor of the Beserye forces, turned in a fine record this year. Ilis charges won 155 games and lost live. But those five losses were hy a total of six points! llarion, Bluncie. Shortridge, and Logansport all won one-point decisions while Howe "tll'lllDlJCll,, theui hy two points. Trask, Golf, and Tennis Teams Finish High VVhen Techites think of track at Tech, they think of two coaches, Paul llyers and Ruehen Behl1ne1', head mentors of this year's cinder squad and of the track teams for the past Q5 years. But they shouldn,t overlook the capahle assistance of James Stewart nor lvilliam Treichler. This ycar's squad, as previous teams, was well hal- anced. Dick Tinnel, Gene James, and Joe Sexson were the returning lette1'1nen on the 38-man aggregation. The Reserves, under Coach Stewart, turned in a fine season as did the scampering frosh coached hy Vvilliam Treichler. Tech's stadium and track also matches its fine teams. The broad, eight-lane oval was the scene of the colorful Indianapolis Relays, Sectional and Regional meets, the City meet, and the grand finale of Hoosier cinder spec- tacles, the State championships. Golf and tennis aren't in the limelight as much as Tech's major sports, hut nevertheless require as much effort on the part of the participants. Golf, the only spring and fall sport, is coached hy Earl Ensinger. Two returning letternlen, Scott Teal and Joe Harbin, plus Henry Birk, Harry Poland, Earl Ensinger Jr., Tom Lines, James Notfke, and David Smith make up the team. 96 Billy Dankert, Jerry O,Dell, and Gene Turnipseed were the veteran "racketeers,,' while Bennie Harlan, Ernie Henninger, Jere Benedict, and Tom Biddinger completed Coach Powell lIo0rhead,s net charges.
