5? x f xi vp., ni.: Vik' ff W ff I af-. The Shop Building houses the Power Plant, two girls' gyms, shops, the chemistry and physics laboratories. A landmark on the campus is the old coltonwood tree near the walk from the Arsenal to the Artillery Building. During the first four years of the school, Tech students and faculty lived under a cloud of uncertainty. VVhen the Winona Technical Institute had failed, many who had helped buy the Arsenal from the government wanted the grounds divided and sold as city lots so they could get their money back. When Technical High School opened, lllr. Stuart thought that the disposition of the grounds would be settled by November, but four Novembers passed before, on llflay 22, 1916, the Indiana State Supreme Court decided to give a perpetual deed to the grounds to the Board of School Commissioners. hir. Stuart named this day Supreme Day. That spring, lllr. Stuart left lllanual to devote his full time to Tech. Ilnder the skillful guidance of hir. Stuart, from 1912 until 1930, the Arsenal Technical Schools grew to an enrollment of five thousand four hundred and twenty-one. That year of 1930 lllr. Stuart accepted the position of assistant superintendent of public schools in charge of secondary education. llfr. DeWitt S. Morgan, who was Tech's first vice-principal, took hir. Stuart's place. He, in turn, was appointed, in 1937, superin- tendent of the Indianapolis public schools, and lllr. Hanson H. Anderson, then vice-principal and one of the original eight Tech teachers, was made principal. Tech, the School of Tomorrow, has had only three principals in its history, and all three have grown up with the school. hir. Stuart and hir. Anderson were members of the first faculty in 1912 and lllr. lllorgan arrived in 1916. -6-
